Pastor Andy Keltner
This was part of my Facebook feed, from four years ago today, via a friend and contemporary,  Pastor Francis Schroeder of Holy Cross Lutheran Church Nederland, Texas. He writes....
I had an interesting visit from a person knocking at my church door this Sunday afternoon.
A man came l ooking for answers. He was looking for St. John Lutheran Church in Port Arthur. It was located on Jimmy Johnson Blvd; but when he arrived there this morning it was gone, another congregation was now occupying the facility.
I invited him to sit down in my office and I told him that his congregation no longer existed. It had closed several years ago. He had a puzzled and shocked look on his face and wondered how and why would a church with a long history ever close? "Churches don't close, do they?", he asked.
Yes they do was my reply.
Churches do not receive government support, most do not receive subsidies or grants from corporations or non-profit organizations. All exist on the gifts and offerings of members, friends, and guests.
"But what about this family, or that family, and that family? They have always been there and they always supported the church?"
Well, the first family you asked about moved to be closer to their grandchildren, the second family you asked reside in a nursing home, and the other families you asked about have divorced, or moved because of a job transfer, and some now reside in heaven.
"So what happened then?", he inquired.
I simply responded, "Our society is one where Sundays are no longer filled with people eager to be in the house of the Lord. Many pews are empty and fresh Sunday bulletins are left untouched and hymnals unopened. On Sundays younger families opt out for other events with their children and youth; for others each and every three-day weekend is another weekend absent from God's house, and for others there are countless reasons which keep them away from worship."
I asked my new friend how long was he away from his now closed church. He responded, "21 years, but I thought St. John Lutheran in Port Arthur would always be there!"
My new friend didn't realize and understand that a portion of offerings and tithes is used to keep the ministry going plus the army of volunteers is needed to serve and step up to the plate. Without those two key elements the broader ministry is regulated to continual cuts and cuts and cuts until it is eliminated. Staff positions are consolidated until they are no longer funded. The empty leadership positions are often left unfilled. Called professionals preach, teach, work, and serve tirelessly but often decide to give up because they have become disappointed and disillusioned with ministry.
I shared with him that I have 20% of my seminary classmates from 1984 literally disappear from the face of the earth. They have chosen to unplug, get off the grid, or distance themselves from church, their classmates, and sadly, even some from the LORD.
Such things, I explained to my new friend, is happening today in many locations across this land.
I was able to take him into our sanctuary and showed the 1928 baptismal font we received from St. John Lutheran Church before it closed. He gently touched the cover and the ceramic basin which held the waters when he was baptized years ago.
He said, "But it is gone."
No I said, "It is still here", and I pointed to the pews in the sanctuary, "but it needs for you to be here, to sing, to pray, to worship, to celebrate, and to join in serving, in order for it to reach the world. The WORD OF GOD will always remain but the local congregation is always one generation away from extinction."
My friend thanked me, shook my hand, and promised to return.
I hope and pray that he does......and many others as well.

COS Worship Word by Janie Ott

I n Times of Need: God is Always Near

In the Word:    "It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed."
(Deuteronomy 31:8)

Of the Word:
Last month I asked for volunteers to help with our COS services. As I started drafting this month's newsletter plea for volunteers, I recalled the words from the LWML "Mustard Seed" daily devotion, and the verse above echoed in my head.

My daughter is a kindergarten teacher and she has shared with me how our children of this world need Jesus. We have children losing parents to death by suicide, young parents struggling financially and everyone just trying to survive our broken world.

As I pass through the halls of hospitals daily I see sick and injured people fighting to regain a healthily lifestyle to function as they once did.
We live in a fast-paced world where the demands of everyday life can overwhelm us. Fear can take over and convince us that we are all alone in our struggles. It is then that we must slow down, tune out our worries and frustrations, and quietly listen for the voice of our Lord. No matter our situation, God is never far away - He is always with us! He is our everlasting Helpmate.

Our daily agendas may be full, but the most important "to do" on it should be setting aside quiet times to spend in devotion, praise and prayer with our Lord. During these times of togetherness is when we often sense the loving presence of our Savior. "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you." (John 14:18)

The greatest gift we have is sharing our talents to help those attending our services to have that quiet time with God, to help them forget the week they had and help them prepare for the week ahead. What if we had to go through this world alone, how would any of us make it through? Listening to the readings, the singing, hearing Pastors sermon and taking holy communion are all components and tools which help us understand and give us peace.

My plea to each of you is to serve, in your own special way. The smallest gift might the be largest blessing to many. And for those who just can't serve currently, my prayer is that our worship services bring you guidance and peace. I can remember very distinct times in my life that I just couldn't serve, but bringing myself to attend church helped me through those dark times. I wish I thanked those serving during those times in my life, because their service impacted my worship.

Remember your Board of Worship leaders are Janie Ott and Debbie Keltner. Text, email or call us anytime and we will use your talents to glorify our Lord.

The anniversary dinner on Oct. 19th was a success. Approximately 25 individuals came out and celebrated our church's 15th anniversary.

Again, many thanks to everyone that planned, set up, cooked and came out to celebrate!

Council Minute: Budget time!

It is that time again. The Church Council will put the final touches on the church's budget proposal at the next council meeting in November. We will publish the budget electronically for your review before the congregational meeting in early December. We are looking for ideas to increase tithes and offerings while continuing to tightly manage the expenses.  Please consider electronic giving by setting up recurring contributions to help increase and level out the income (especially in the summer when attendance is lower). There are forms in the Narthex to use to get started. Linda Richards can also assist. Another way to help increase our income is by using Amazon Smile if you are an Amazon shopper. Amazon makes direct contributions to the church when you use  smile.amazon.com to make purchases and Christ Our Savior Louisburg is your designated charity. Smile works for Prime customers too!
