Dear St. John the Baptist Families,
Last night, Governor Gavin Newsom shared, "Don't anticipate schools are going to open up in a week...It's unlikely that many of these schools - few if any - will open before the summer break." Governor Newsom has yet to make a definitive order in terms of schools. His statement, while not a finality, certainly can cause further stress/concern for what lies ahead.
Our natural instinct is to try and answer questions as quickly as they arise. Realistically however, some questions take longer to respond to than others because of their respective complexities. Please know all Diocese of Oakland principals are working in consultation with our Diocesan School Department; who in turn are working closely with the California Department of Education, the Department of Public Health and the Governor's Office. Our Superintendent of schools, Kathleen Radecke and her team. along with Bishop Barber are actively reviewing options and necessary decisions, and will communicate with all principals in a timely fashion.
What we DO KNOW:
We will extend our Distance Learning until April 8 - Holy Wednesday. This is exactly in line with our calendared school year schedule, learning will take place until April 8th at 3:00pm and we will begin our Easter vacation on Holy Thursday, April 9th and classes will resume April 20. Please know it still has not been determined if the classes beginning April 20 will be on campus or via Distance Learning. All Catholic schools in the Diocese of Oakland will be on this schedule and we will ALL begin the Holy Triduum, and allow each family to celebrate this important moment in the life of our Church together. We will be sure to send a prayer service home for your family to come together in faith and unity.
Pacing and self-care for you and your family is a priority right now. This is a journey. And while we are all on it, we all experience different reactions and/or emotions along the way. Remaining patient and being flexible are critical as this is new for all of us. Let us strive to do our best, with God's Grace, as we journey to Easter Resurrection, the end of our school year, and to a safe and healthy place for our families, our community and our world.
