Rector's Ramblings

Rector's Ramblings

May was the best running month I've had in years for both mileage and pace. I managed to run 55 miles and saw a good decrease in both average and max heart rates over the course of the month. I also managed to increase my cadence (a long term goal of mine to ward off injury). I was feeling pretty good about things going into June. But then I ran less than half of May's miles by the end of the month. July? Today is the first day I have run this month. So what happened?

First, it was that rainy stretch we had. My regular running time seemed to be preempted by thunderstorms over and over again. There was also an allergy problem and a minor illness in the mix. Vacation didn't help much, although I put in a couple of good, strenuous hikes and rides, so maybe they should count as runs. But, more than anything else, I suspect it was the arrival of the real heat and humidity after a beautiful longer-than-normal spring on the Island.  There is no good time of day to avoid such things. Temps are lower in the morning, but humidity is higher. A lot of days they trade extremes in the afternoons. I'm not sure which is worse for a successful run.

Worship

Worship This Week

Please join us on Sunday, at 9:15 am, for online Holy Eucharist, which will be available  on the Christ Church Facebook page here , on our YouTube page here , or the Christ Church website here .
Communion At Home - July 21-24
We will be celebrating Holy Eucharist this coming Sunday, July 19. We will invite those of you watching from home to pray the prayer of spiritual communion, and we will also be consecrating enough hosts to distribute it to you all, in person during the following week.

Following guidelines set out by our bishop, Clergy and Eucharistic Visitors will bring communion to you at your homes upon request. We will pray the brief service of Communion Under Special Circumstances with you from your front porch. We will not enter your homes, we will maintain at least 6 feet of physical distance at all times, and we will wear masks. We will provide printed copies of the brief service; you need not plan on anything in particular.

If you would like to receive communion at home during the week of July 21-24, please fill out the form linked HERE. You MUST provide us with a current phone number so that we can contact you.

The form will ask for some basic information, including the number of people in your household who would like to receive, and when you might be available for us to stop by. We will confirm a window of time with you by Monday, with distribution beginning on Tuesday of that week.

Please know that if we have a lot of requests it will take us some time to get everyone scheduled and get communion distributed. Please be patient with us; we are a large congregation and we don't know how much interest there will be in this way of distributing communion.

We also need your help to get the word out to parishioners who may not receive emails from the Church or have limited use of technology. We will be contacting everyone via a recorded phone message, but please help us reach out and touch those folks, too, if you know anyone. If they would like communion you may fill out a form for them and submit it.
Evening Prayer
If you enjoy hearing Evening Prayer read, please look for it at 5:00 pm on the Christ Church Facebook page here . The Rite I bulletin for evening prayer can be found here . The Rite II bulletin for evening prayer can be found here .

Mtr. Katie is staying in touch with our children, youth and their families, through newsletters, check-ins, the Christ Church Families Facebook page and last, but not least, weekly Kidurgy worship!

Mission
and Outreach

The Backpack Buddies - Getting the Job Done!
Our ever-faithful Backpack Buddies continue their mission of feeding our young friends in Glynn County throughout these very hot summer months, with weekly assembly and delivery of nutritious bags of foods, which nourish the children over the weekends, when the summer school feeding program is closed. At present, thanks to the continued and generous donations of foods from Christ Church parishioners and friends, we are actually in good shape this week!

However, our friends at the St. Athanasius Feed My Sheep Food Pantry, in Brunswick, are definitely in need of a few items for the folks who are served there. This week's wish list for St. Athanasius includes:

* Canned Green Beans
* Canned Corn
* Diced Tomatoes
* Full-Sized Cereal Boxes

(And if you happen to have a few paper or plastic grocery bags on hand, we can always use them to transport food to the places where it is needed.)

Something special going this on this week with our Backpack Buddies packing, is that we're including face masks for the adults in the households of our young buddies. We're doing everything we can to help everyone stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic!

We are alway grateful for your help with the Backpack Buddies mission! If you have any items you'd like to donate this week, they may be dropped off on the front porch at the Christ Church Parish House.

If you would like to help the Backpack Buddies ministry with a monetary donation, it would be greatly appreciated. You can donate by check (just mail it to Christ Church, at 6329 Frederica Road St. Simons Island, GA 31522 - check memo, Backpack Buddies) or give online HERE (choose Backpack Program) . For more information about the Backpack Buddies program, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected].
Diocesan Face Mask Initiative
It's not just our local children and their families who are in need of face masks. The 8,000 children attending the 22 Episcopal schools in The Dominican Republic could use our help, too. School resumes in August, and the government is insisting that all children wear a mask. We can help Bishop Moises Quezada, the Diocese of the Dominican Republic and these children by making and collecting new masks for them. The most efficient way to ship them is to send them to the Dominican Development Group, C/O  St.  Mark's Episcopal Church, 13312 Cain Rd., Tampa FL, 33625, phone: (814-400-2722.)

Haydee and Jim Toedtman of St. Peter's in Savannah, help coordinate our diocese mission initiative in the Dominican Republic. Haydee is shown greeting students at Colegio San Pedro y San Pablo just outside of Santo Domingo during an exploration visit last fall. Any questions can be directed to Jim Toedtman by email ([email protected]) or cell phone - 703-967-0652.
