Reducing Re-Arrest and Promoting Recovery:  Understanding and Addressing the Factors that Contribute to Re-Arrest -- New online module is now available

Do you know that:
  • Even for individuals diagnosed with serious mental illness, arrests are usually not a direct effect of the mental illness.
  • Treatment for mental illness, although critically important, doesn't necessarily lead to re-arrest reduction on its own.
  • Individuals can be most successful when we use an integrated wholistic approach which incorporates best practices for treatment of mental illness with best practices for reducing the risk of recidivism.

The  Reducing Re-Arrest and Promoting Recovery:  Understanding and Addressing the Factors that Contribute to Re-Arrest module was designed specifically for providers working with justice-involved individuals with mental illness. It presents the Risk/Needs/Responsivity model, which identifies three factors needing attention when helping individuals to reduce re-arrest. Each factor is explained with illustrations.  Using videos, case studies and interactive exercises, this module helps providers to:
  • Identify factors that contribute both directly and indirectly to an individual's risk of recidivism
  • Recommend interventions that are responsive to an individual's recidivism risk factors
  • Determine the intensity of treatment planning in the context of an individual's risk of recidivism and clinical need
This module was developed by the CUCS Academy for Justice-Informed Practice and CPI and funded and developed by the NYS Office of Mental Health, and the Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene in cooperation with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Continuing education credits for completion of this module are available to social workers, licensed mental health counselors, and CASACs.
