District reaches tentative agreement with teachers, educational support professionals to increase salaries
All teachers and educational support professionals (ESPs) in Alachua County Public Schools will receive salary increases this year based on a tentative agreement reached by negotiators for both the district and the Alachua County Education Association (ACEA), which represents those employees.
Under the agreement, salaries for teachers would rise another 2% in addition to the 1.5% ‘step’ increases that nearly all teachers are also receiving for this year. Steps are annual salary increases based on years of experience and performance evaluations.
Many teachers will also receive additional pay increases based on such factors as where they teach and any supplemental activities they take on, such as coaching, serving as department heads, sponsoring certain clubs, etc.
An additional $300,000 has been set aside for teacher bonuses. The ACEA will determine how to distribute those funds, with the plan to be approved by the School Board.
The new agreement, along with annual step increases, represents a total boost in pay for most teachers of 9% over the last two years. During the last school year, the average teacher salary of $45,215 placed ACPS 44
th
among the state’s 67 school districts. That’s up from a ranking of 55
th
in the 2017-18 school year and 62
nd
eight years ago. The new average teacher salary and rankings for ACPS and all Florida districts will be calculated at the end of the school year.
The district’s ESPs, a group which includes paraprofessionals, food service workers, custodians, clerical staff and many other employees will receive a salary increase of 60 cents per hour, which represents an average of about 4.3% That brings the minimum wage to $11.57 an hour, an increase of more than 8% over the last two years.

Colliers International in Gainesville Facilitates Lease for Florida Surgery Consultants, LLC
Lease will support company’s expansion to Alachua County
October 21, 2019 — Gainesville, Fla. — The Drotos Ryals Team of Colliers International in Gainesville has facilitated a lease on behalf of Florida Surgery Consultants, LLC. The company has taken occupancy of a 1,647-square-foot building in the Springhill Professional Center, located at 3760 NW 83rd Street, Suite 3,
effective October 1, 2019.
Dan Drotos, Rory Causseaux, Mike Ryals and Lauren Edwards represented the tenant and the landlord in the transaction. The lease will support Florida Surgery Consultants’ expansion to Alachua County. The company currently operates seven other locations throughout Florida.
Florida Surgery Consultants is a team of Board Certified surgeons who are trained in procedures across a variety of disciplines, including neurological, orthopedic, interventional and plastic surgery. The company added three positions to staff its Gainesville office, which opened on October 3. Dr. Donna Saatman, M.D., serves as the office’s lead full-time, Board Certified neurosurgeon.

Meridian’s Inaugural Kindness Matters Event in Honor of World Mental Health Day Goal: increase mental health education, awareness, and advocacy
Gainesville, Fla. – On Thursday, October 10th, 2019, Meridian, the region’s leading wellness provider, along with NAMI Gainesville and Gainesville Opportunity Center, held its inaugural Kindness Matters event in honor of World Mental Health Day. This Gainesville-based event encouraged community members through word of mouth and various social media sites to do something kind for another person during World Mental Health Day.
Leading up to the Kindness Matters event, Meridian’s staff and volunteers held a complementary dog wash at Squirrel Ridge’s dog park. Gainesville Opportunity Center painted a mural at the Gainesville Marketplace garden. NAMI Gainesville headed to the University of Florida on the 10th to hand out educational brochures to the students along with sweet snacks.
The Facebook event made over 1000 impressions and many supporters posted their act of kindness on October 10th throughout the day. One person wrote letters to all of her students sharing her appreciation of them. Another person bought coffee for a stranger. And one individual even offered free tech repair to anyone who got their request in by October 10th.
Preparations are already underway for next year’s Kindness Matters 2020! The Facebook eventis live and interest is growing every day. Follow along as participants share their “not-so- random” acts of kindness leading up to a 2020’s World Mental Health Day, which conveniently falls on a Saturday, so you can expect Meridian to host a momentous event! Dance Marathon at UF Aims to Raise $650,000 in 26.2 Hours
GAINESVILLE, Fla. –– During each Fall semester, Dance Marathon at the University of Florida holds a 26.2-hour fundraising initiative known as Transform Today. On this day, students aim to unite the campus and community to raise both funds and awareness for the patients at UF Health Shands Children's Hospital, Gainesville’s local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Last year, Dance Marathon at UF raised $626,602.22 in 26.2 hours during Transform Today. This year, DM at UF’s goal is to raise $650,000.00 from Oct. 22 at 8:00 a.m. to Oct. 23 at 10:12 a.m. The 26.2-hour time frame represents the 26.2 hours that Dancers will stand at Dance Marathon’s main Event in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center on March 28-29, 2020.
Every dollar raised during Transform Today will contribute to DM at UF’s 2020 grand total, which will benefit UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital, the state’s premier pediatric health center. UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital provides thorough and innovative care at the highest quality and service, in partnership with patient families, healthcare teams and communities. Donations raised by DM at UF are instrumental in providing research, education, equipment and programs that make UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital a leader in pediatric care.
Throughout Transform Today, students remain dedicated to fundraising because of the courage and tenacity of the children with illnesses - who continue to face each day with a smile, despite how challenging their fight may be. Transform Today serves as an opportunity for the UF campus, the Gainesville community and other college and high school students across Florida to rise as one movement fighting to end childhood illness. This fundraising push ignites action throughout the state, while also setting the foundation for consistent fundraising, dedication and inspiration throughout the year.
The total amount raised during Transform Today will be revealed at Dance Marathon at UF’s annual Halloween celebration, Moralloween, on Oct. 23 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Flavet Field on UF’s campus. Tickets are $5 on the DM at UF online store on our website and $7 at the door. Visitors are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Make a Strong Impression Every Time You Speak!
In Florida, you can find excellent professional speakers with impressive credentials and experience. How did they achieve their skills? And can you become as good as they are?
Understanding the mechanics and fundamentals of professional speaking is essential to becoming a dynamic, powerful speaker. If you’re already dynamic and powerful, learning additional skills will help you shine even more when you get up in front of a group of people.
And what if you’re afraid or avoid speaking in front of others like traffic on University Avenue right before a big Gators home game’? Then you just haven’t gotten the specific information you need to turn fear or nerves into energy and power. We are wired to avoid discomfort; getting a bit comfortable being uncomfortable sets you up for great success.
Speaking skills give you an edge, an advantage of being perceived as more intelligent, promotable and interesting.
Here are five tips guaranteed to make you a more effective speaker:
1. Always involve your audience. Whether you ask them to raise their hand following your question or turn to each other to respond to something, always get them involved almost immediately. It offers an incredible number of benefits including you can relax—the emphasis is off you—and the audience will feel more engaged.
2. Always pause for two to three seconds before you start speaking. This allows you to learn you don’t have to rush to answer, helping you feel more comfortable, and it teaches your audience you are comfortable and don’t have to fill the silence with those annoying ums and uhs we hear from uncomfortable or nervous speakers.
3. Rehearse the first 15 seconds to the first couple of minutes the most. The reason is simple, you are the most nervous at the beginning of a presentation and this is when you make your first impression. Grab the audience at the beginning and regardless of what happens later, they will be on your side, you’ve already won them over. If you don’t grab them at the beginning then you’ll be playing catch-up, trying to win them over throughout your entire speech.
4. Be memorable. Say or do something that is not in the norm. As an example, I use sleight-of-hand because people are visual learners and throwing in a bit of magic sets the stage for the unpredictable. Nothing will put a group to sleep faster than predictability.
5. Never memorize a presentation. Learn in simple chunks so regardless of what happens, you will be able to remember where you were in a presentation, and then rehearse/practice as much as you can. Rule of thumb is one hour for every minute you speak.
There are many tools to help you become a better speaker, and it’s definitely worth the effort. Look for information on my speaking skills workshop in the spring. You can always work with me one-on-one as well. Advantages include:
· Awareness of where you need to improve- we can’t see ourselves (alternative-video yourself)
· Learn at your own pace
· Tailored to your needs and strengths
· Increase your skill level in all aspects of speaking
Roscoe Drummond was credited for saying the mind is an amazing thing, it starts working the second you’re born and never stops until you get up to speak in public! Speaking can be fun, and it’s an excellent tool; you just never know when you’ll be asked to stand up and speak. All you need is to be prepared!
