The summer 1 term has officially begun , and we are  ver y impressed by how our students, faculty, and staff have navigated th e  un certain  waters  of the pandemic  over the past months.  This is a difficult time during which our CSSH community is doing much important and hard work. Tiffany Joseph , Associate Professor of Sociology and International Affairs , has published an op-ed, " Trump's immigration policies are making the coronavirus pandemic worse ," in Newsweek.

Joan Fitzgerald, Professor of Public Policy and Urban Affairs, in her commentary " Viral Inequality and Climate Justice," published in Planetizen, makes the case for integrating environmental justice in planning for a post-pandemic economic recovery. 

The Social Impact-athon , held by CSSH's Human Services Program and the Social Impact Lab, has selected Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) to receive a grant of $10,000. More than 60 Northeastern students and alumni spent last week researching Boston nonprofits as part of two Social Impact-athons for COVID-19.

NU Writers' Week 2020

Join us on Zoom for a week-long virtual celebration of writers from across the globe. This year's Writers' Week will focus on anti-racism and writing as a form of community building. These interactive events will feature a panel discussion, resume/cover letter workshop, poetry workshop, performance art workshop, a creative nonfiction workshop, and One Week, One Goal.

Please join your CSSH colleagues as they share experiences with pivoting their research during challenging situations prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and also hold a discussion about what is possible now.

  • Daniel Aldrich, Professor of Political Science and Public Policy and Urban Affairs
  • Elizabeth Bucar, Professor of Religious Studies
Each speaker will share the challenges they have faced, strategies they have used to address these challenges, and what they have learned along the way. Following brief presentations, we will open the floor for questions and a discussion of lessons learned from efforts to pivot research.

BARI's annual conference is a unique forum for greater Boston's civic data ecosystem-spanning the public sector, private sector, non-profits, community leaders, and academia-to explore how data and technology can be used to better understand and serve our communities. "Smart cities" should be about more than just efficiency and fancy new tools; it is about partnering across institutions and communities to collaboratively transform all of our cities and towns into the places we want them to be.
