The featured artist for the month of November is local painter, Bob Bohne'. Light streaming through branches, breezy blue skies, dark alley ways, Bob has a way of capturing the essence of the environment that he paints. He is best known for his landscapes of Philadelphia and the surrounding area. Bob is the founder of Landscape Painting Philadelphia, a Plein Air Organization with over 400 members and runs a workshop at the Philadelphia Sketch Club. 

Join us for what is to be a spectacular evening of celebrating an amazing local artistic talent. Come meet the artist, view or purchase his newer work and enjoy complimentary refreshments.

Harvey Oak Mercantile

Succulent Terrarium Masters, Fancy Plants, will join Harvey Oak Mercantile for an evening of unique terrarium decorating. Each participant will get the opportunity to decorate a pre-potted terrarium with a variety of sand, rocks, sticks, mosses, and more!

Film Screening: Black Klansman
Swarthmore United Methodist Church - 129 Park Avenue, 7:30 pm 
The Swarthmore United Methodist Church invites the community to a free showing of Black Klansman. This Spike Lee film is based on the true story of Ron Stallworth, the first African-American detective hired on the Colorado Springs police force during the 1970's, and how he infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan. All are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

Book Reading & Signing: John Billheimer

Two opportunities to meet John Billheimer, author of  Hitchcock and the Censors. The book deals with how Alfred Hitchcock's films were targeted for censorship and how the master filmmaker worked around these issues. Additionally, Billheimer will discuss his new mystery novel Primary Target, the sixth in the Owen Allison series set in West Virginia.

Thursday, November 7 - at 1 pm or 7 pm - in Gathering Room at The Inn at Swarthmore.

Gardentopia: Design Basics for Creating Beautiful Outdoor Spaces

How can you shape your yard so that you combine the art of landscaping with the ecological awareness that is so important? This inspiring presentation with Jan Johnsen, will have you seeing all the possibilities your garden area offers. By utilizing such ideas as "hide and reveal," "lure of the sheltered corner," and "principle of three depths" you can make your outdoor space a place of beauty and delight.  Free and open to the public, space limited to 200. Myofascial Release Workshop

Indigo Healing Arts Collective 
This "fascia-nating" workshop fuses together information about the ins and outs of connective tissue from the perspective of massage therapy with alignment based exercises of Pilates.  Learn about the myofascial system and the vital part it plays in your body. It is important to maintain open pathways throughout the body and understand that over-stressed fascia can lead to misalignment, discomfort and body pain. 

Join in-house massage therapist, Niva and guest Pilates instructor Kelly from Movement Source Pilates, for this all-levels workshop geared toward anyone who can get on and off the floor. If you have a body, it will thank you for attending this workshop. No previous experience required. The Alchemy of Self Care and Slow Beauty

Enjoy an evening of deep centering and self care that includes Yoga, Ayurvedic beauty rituals and a Sound Bath Concert. Mallory will lead a warming and grounding practice of slow flow yoga and guided breathing followed by a soothing sound bath meditation with crystal singing bowls offered by Olivia. The evening concludes with an exploration of ancient Ayurvedic beauty and self-care regimens offered by Indigo owner, Jacqlyn in the apothecary.

Restorative Yoga with Suki

Join our monthly restorative practice with Suki where students will move through a sequence of poses to promote healing & harmony of mind, body & spirit. Thanksgiving Holiday Arrangements

Join Scott Arboretum gardener Susan Romero to create a gorgeous arrangement for your Thanksgiving table with fresh autumn greens and flowers. Susan will lead a demonstration on how to choose the best plant materials and creatively display them to make your table a conversation piece. This year, we will not use oasis - she will show you a creative way to hold your flowers in place in a glass vase. Flowers, vase, and instructions are included in the price. Limit 18. Wax + "Un-Wine" with Nether Providence Soaps  
The November 22 workshop at Harvey Oak Mercantile is SOLD OUT, but this  popular maker event will return on Friday, December 13 from 6-8pm.  Get creative while relaxing and having some fun with friends. Soap and scent master, Saarene Panossian of Nether Providence Soaps will lead a hands-on workshop where you will blend your own fragrance and create a 10oz candle.

Come hear author Benedicte Grima read from and discuss her novel Talk Till the Minutes Run Out, followed by a book signing in the Swarthmore Campus & Community Store.

Aging and homesick, Nur Ali is working at a local 7-Eleven and seeking asylum. Though exiled from his Pakistan, homeland and inaccurately labeled as a Taliban sympathizer by the US government, he's determined to keep his position as family patriarch. So Nur Ali leads and provides for his beloved family clan back in Pakistan while living half a world away.

Grima's novel is not only a thoughtful, engaging read, but provides new insight on what it's like to be a Muslim immigrant living in the United States.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Talk Till the Minutes Run Out
Wednesday, November 20 at 7 pm 
Benedicte Grima has deep roots in both US and Middle East Culture. She grew up internationally, studied four Middle Eastern languages, became proficient in Farsi and Pashto, and conducted over twenty years of fieldwork throughout Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan - some as a Fulbright Scholar - as well as among refugees and exiles from there in the US as a language and culture interpreter.  Her novel gives readers new insight on what it's like to be a Muslim immigrant living in the United States.

T'ai Chi Chih
An eight week series led by Susan Corey each Monday at 4 pm in October & November.
T'ai Chi Chih is a moving meditation consisting of nineteen non-strenuous, easily learned movements taught over an 8-week session. These natural and gentle movements are done slowly, smoothly, and softly; the focus is on developing intrinsic energy and wellness. Rather than emphasizing martial arts principles, T'ai Chi Chih concentrates on focusing, balancing, and circulating the chi, i.e. energy. This practice does not require fitness or coordination and can be done by young adults and retirees alike.  Class size is limited. After the funeral, Reggie is summoned to the embassy and warned by agent/friend Bartholemew (Walter Matthau) that her late husband helped steal 250,000 dollars during the war and that the rest of the gang is after the money as well.  113 minutes.

The Celtic World
Thursdays, October 24 - December 19 from 10 am - 12 pm 
A History of European Art is your gateway to this visually stunning story. In 48 beautifully illustrated lectures, you will encounter all the landmarks you would expect to find in a comprehensive survey of Western art since the Middle Ages. Works such as Giotto's Arena Chapel, Van Eyck's Ghent Altarpiece, Leonardo's The Last Supper, Michelangelo's David, Vermeer's View of Delft, Van Gogh's The Starry Night, Picasso's Guernica, and hundreds more.  Refreshments will be served.
Library Book & Bake Sale
The fall Friends of Swarthmore Public Library Book & Bake Sale will be held on November 7, 8 and 9, and features a huge array of excellent books, movies, music, sheet music, and puzzles that will satisfy a wide spectrum of interests and age groups. A large and varied array of delicious home-made baked goods will also be available for sale.
 
The Book & Bake Sale hours are Thursday, November 7, 9 am until 7 pm; Friday, November 8, 9 am until 7 pm; and Saturday, November 9, 9 am until 4 pm. Friday is Half-Price Day (non-edibles only). Saturday is Bag Day, with most books costing $5 per bag, and rare and boutique books costing $20 per bag. The sale takes place at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue in Swarthmore, and all proceeds from the sale support Swarthmore Public Library.
Register for the Home for the Holidays Santa 5K Run/Walk
The Santa 5K Run/Walk is the kick-off event for Home for the Holidays. The course will commence at the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church (727 Harvard Avenue) and conclude at the Swarthmore Methodist Church (129 Park Avenue).  Race day registration and check-in will open on Saturday, December 7 at 7:45 am. The race will start at 8:30 am. 


Before November 25 = $20
After November 25 = $25
Children age 10 and under are free, but are required to register and run with parent/guardian.
Swarthmore College students free (student ID required).

Dressing up in any winter holiday gear/apparel is 100% encouraged! The first 100 registrants will receive a tote bag to commemorate their participation. 

Swarthmore Town Center and the Swarthmore Farmers Market will be open and located near the finish line so be sure to stick around and refuel after the race! And if you're a hardcore running enthusiast, don't worry...the race will be professionally timed by Bryn Mawr Running Company!
