Last Friday, due to the global spread of the Coronavirus, our school announced the close of our campus, and we moved to remote instruction. We are committed to continuing to provide our community with touch points and to keep celebrating the exceptional accomplishments of our students. Middle School Science Bowl

On Saturday, March 7, middle school students from across the state participated in the Alabama Regional Middle School Science Bowl. The students showed their knowledge of math and science, as well as their teamwork for a chance to compete in the National Science Bowl in Washington D.C.. Good job to all the teams for putting in the work!
It is really exciting to see students participate in Science Bowl, which reminds me of the time I also played on a middle school team. Now, as the Head of Finance on the Science Bowl Administration Team, I get to go behind the scenes and experience how many things the administration teams have to do to prepare for this event. Since I am a senior, my job will be passed down to my Finance Shadow next year. I will miss being Head of Finance, but I know the job will be in good hands!

ASMS junior Marie Naylor earns GOLD AWARD GIRL SCOUT
|
For her Gold Award project, "Nutritious Snacks for Kids at The First Light Shelter," Marie addressed the issue of homeless children living with hunger.
Marie has been volunteering at the The First Light Shelter, which serves local homeless women and children, for years. She created an afternoon snack program, including installing a food organizer for the snacks, at the shelter She then spoke to various church groups, Girl Scout troops (including at the G.I.R.L. Leadership Summit), and other members of the community to address the issue and let them know how they could help. Through these discussions, she collected donations for the center. Marie hopes that her Gold Award project will help educate people in the community on hunger and inspire others to take steps to help solve this issue. Marie will be honored at GSNCA’s Highest Awards Ceremony!

More about the ASMS Capture the Flag Teams

Two ASMS teams competed in a five-hour University of Alabama Capture the Flag competition in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, March 7. A Jeopardy-style competition, students select challenges gaining a varying number of points based on difficulty. Challenge categories include cryptography, binary exploitation, digital forensics, programming, reverse engineering, code-breaking and more.
1st Place -- ASMS Crimson Team Baylee Keevan, Zach Davis, Aidan Anderson, Gabrielle Lohning
2nd Place -- ASMS White Team Mari Swindle, Christian McKinnon, Oscar Presnall, Vasilisa Douglas
Team Coach and Computer Science faculty member Deb Grey shared, "On our return home I asked my students, What is the secret sauce you had to propel us to the top? Was it self motivation, collaboration, problem-solving skills, sticktuitiveness? Students said yes to all of that, but then added self-determination and said, 'Ms. Gray, WE ARE DOING WHAT WE LOVE! We know what we don't know, We have humility, and We work together off of each other's strengths.' Wow, so proud of these students!"
