As the academic year comes to a close in a flurry of deadlines, I want to thank each of you for your contributions and commitment to the mission of Three Rivers. We have a wonderful learning community of not only faculty and staff, but also students who are studying very conscientiously in order to earn an education.

Senior Night Draws
Large Crowd
More than 85 high school students and over 200 total guests attended Senior Night on Thursday, April 20. Steven Paternoster, Peg Stroup, and Erin Sullivan coordinated the event which introduced Three Rivers to these prospective students and their families. Faculty, student services, and representatives from student clubs and organizations also helped make the event an success.

Explore the New Virtual Career Office
Career Services unveiled the new Virtual Career Office on Thursday, April 13. The career office is designed so that students can benefit from the three embedded software programs--Focus 2 Career, College Central Network, Optimal Interview--plus numerous other career services resources.
Focus 2 Career offers self and academic assessments that provide an opportunity to review personal strengths and accomplishments within different categories of professional development. College Central Network's resume builder and career portfolio adds emphasis to on-campus promotional opportunities. The new Optimal Interview module increases employment preparation for future on-campus hiring. The Virtual Career Office can be accessed by logging into Blackboard and clicking on the My Organization table.

InFusion Combines Literature and Spoken Word Poetry for a Successful Night in New London
Featured poet Jose Gonzalez and spoken word poet Iyaba Ibo Mandingo performed at the 3rd Annual InFusion: Where Literary & Oral Tradition Traverse, which took place at Expressiones Cultural Center in New London on Friday, April 21. InFusion is a literary and performing art series that was founded and organized by Professor Frederick-Douglass Knowles II. It is held each April in honor of National Poetry Month.
This free event was presented by Three Rivers Community College Community Involvement & Support Committee, Three Rivers College Foundation and Expressiones Cultural Center.

Three Rivers hosts
Third Annual Eastern Advanced Manufacturing Alliance Video Challenge and Film Festival
On Wednesday, April 28, approximately 100 students from 14 high school teams participated in the video challenge. 6,900 votes were cast during the online voting period and almost 200 people attended the EAMA awards/Film Festival. Learn more and watch the videos here.

Professor Diba Khan-Bureau Publishes Paper
Congratulations to Professor Diba Khan-Bureau on the publication of her paper, "Contrasting morphological and DNA barcoding methods for diatom (Bacillariophyta) identification from environmental samples in the Eightmile River in Connecticut, U.S.A.," in Nova Hedwigia, Beihefte, the supplemental series of the international journal, Nova Hedwigia.

 Adjunct Instructor Competes on History Channel Show
Adjunct art instructor Brian Dimmock competed on "Forged in Fire," a competition show on the History Channel that is similar to the Food Network's "Chopped." H
owever, instead of rounds of food evaluated for taste or presentation, master bladesmiths craft weapons that are tested by experts for their strength and sharpness. His episode aired on Tuesday, April 25 on the History Channel and is still available online.

Nursing Lab Plays Starring Role in Lifetime Movie
The Three Rivers Nursing Lab stands in as a hospital room in the LMN (Lifetime Movie Network) TV thriller that includes a creepy stalker, a shark attack, and the tag line: "Not all blood-thirsty predators are in the deep, some can be your hero."
Produced by Synthetic Cinema, "Stalker's Prey" aired April 13 on the LMN. You can watch it on YouTube here. Our lab can be seen several times between the 13:00-18:30 minute marks. The film was also shot at sites including East Lyme High School, Main Street Grille and the Inn at Harbor Hill Marina, both in Niantic.

News from Three Rivers College Foundation
|
This year, for the first time, the Three Rivers College Foundation will award $51,000 in Summer Scholarships. This pilot initiative will increase the retention rate of qualified students who may not otherwise be able to afford summer tuition and fees. It will keep students engaged and on campus during the summer months, boost Spring to Fall retention rates as students earn valuable credits, and maintain momentum over the summer. In addition, the scholarship opportunity will assist part-time students who have earned 45+ credits and expedite their path to graduation.

 Silvia Cooke-Salina was a member of the panel discussing Embedded Support: How if Helps, Why it Works at the Center for Higher Education Retention Excellence Conference on Thursday, April 13. Silvia will graduate with a degree in General Studies this May. She came from Peru only four years ago and worked her way through the Three Rivers ESOL and developmental course sequence. She is transferring to ECSU where she has been accepted into their competitive Social Work Program.

 On Thursday, April 13,
34 students were inducted into
Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year college students. For students to earn a place in Phi Theta Kappa, they must complete 18 credit hours and earn and maintain a 3.5 grade point average.

Congratulations Graduates!

The latest class of the Eastern Connecticut Manufacturing Pipeline Initiative graduated on Wednesday, April 19. Students will be moving on to jobs with local manufacturers, including Electric Boat and Collins & Jewell Company. The students were proudly supported by
their families.
On Tuesday, April 4, the ConnCAS students graduated from Three Rivers most successful retention program.

students' achievements.
