Reflection from Our Co-Pastors

Our God Keeps Promises
Those of us who are on the liturgy committee and who are lectors are lucky because we get to preview the Mass for the coming Sunday as well has attend to them on Sunday. Usually, the Gospel is most catching but this Sunday I am stopped by the very first readings…oh my!
It is from1 Kgs 17:8-16.

“The word of God came to Elijah saying, “Go now to Zarephath, and stay there. I have commanded a woman - a widow - to feed you.”

Elijah set out and went to Zarephath,
which was in the territory of Sidon. It was a Gentile town.

When Elijah arrived at the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and said,
“Bring me a little water in a jar, so that I may drink.”  As she was going to bring it he called to her and said,
“Bring me also a morsel of bread.“
She said, “As God, your God lives, I have nothing baked. I have only a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a jug.

I am now gathering a couple of sticks,
so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my child.  We will eat it, and then we will die.”

Elijah said to her, “Do not be afraid. Go, and do as you have said;
but first, make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your child.

For the God of Israel says this:
‘The jar of meal will not be emptied, and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that God sends rain on the earth.’”
The widow went and did as Elijah said. She, her household, and Elijah ate for many days.

The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of God spoken through Elijah.”

There must have been a trail of stories of the God of Israel. The woman, a widow the poorest of the poor, and her child were on the brink of death from starvation yet she gave some of the little of what she had to Elijah as he told her to do in the name of God, a god which was not hers. Was she confused? Hopeful? Scared? Desperate? She was starving.

Whatever she was, she followed Elijah’s instructions to make some for him on the promise from God that she would not go hungry, she would have more than enough to eat. And she did!
If we can for a moment compare ourselves to this woman. Upon reflection, what are we starving for right now? What God do we turn to when that drive to fill ourselves shouts out? We have resources for contemplation and distraction. Which do we choose?

And in choosing, is there a little that we can give to another while at the same time trusting that, in this very moment of hunger, our God will provide as promised?

Amen
