NEWS ROUNDUP
DATA PRIVACY

In today's society, we stay connected through social media apps, raising flags around data privacy and privacy and safety in general. Data privacy remains a top concern for Attorneys General in their work of protecting state consumers of all ages. California, Colorado and Virginia have enacted comprehensive consumer data privacy laws and other states are looking to follow suit.

TikTok introduced a set of changes specifically to enhance protections for teens ages 13 - 17, related to direct messaging, video viewing, video downloads, and push notifications that will roll out over the coming months.
TRIBAL PROTECTION

A responsibility of Attorneys General in states with sovereign lands is to maintain cooperative relationships between tribal entities and their offices. This work includes but is not limited to intergovernmental cooperation, policy development, and promoting health and safety for tribal citizens.

In response to years of disproportionate violence affecting local tribes, Washington Attorney General Ferguson recently announced the Washington State Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People (MMIW/P) Task Force. HIs office called this an important step forward in addressing systemic inequities and improving the state’s response.

Additionally, California approved a new $5 million investment aimed at supporting public safety on tribal lands. Attorney General Bonta's office said the new effort also includes funds to study challenges related to the reporting and identification of missing and murdered Native Americans in California, particularly women and girls.

CONSUMER PROTECTION

Protecting consumers is the Attorney General's bread and butter. Our modern world has created multiple new channels for scammers to target unassuming citizens, so the work of our state AGs in consumer protection is ever-changing and mutating.

Florida Attorney General Moody's office uncovered an illegal charity fundraising robocall scheme in her state, resulting in payments nearing half a million dollars sent to nonprofits in order to support the charitable purposes the donors originally intended.

And in Arkansas, Attorney General Rutledge filed suit against a consumer company who failed to deliver on multiple purchases, resulting in numerous violations against the state's Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
SOCIAL JUSTICE & EQUITY

Noting that many drivers and delivery people are immigrants, Uber announced a new partnership with Rosetta Stone that offers free language courses to all drivers. This partnership will allow for more meaningful conversations with the diverse community Uber serves.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FOR ONGOING SOCIAL JUSTICE & EQUITY INITIATIVES

Over the last year, communities across the country have assessed their treatment of minorities and other under-represented populations. In an effort to facilitate dialogue in the Attorney General community, Amazon and the Attorney General Alliance have partnered to create a series of conversations exploring issues around justice and social equity. We are excited to announce 2021 as the inaugural year of this forum and we look forward to providing focused programing aimed at facilitating exploration of these issues. We thank Amazon for their leadership and invite all of our public and private partners join us as we embark on these discussions.
