Michigan's Construction Industry Scheduled to Reopen on May 7th
|
|
At 3:00 p.m. on April 29th, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced her intention to sign an executive order allowing residential and commercial contractors to return to work, effective May 7, 2020.
We encourage you to begin preparing your workplace, employees, suppliers, and customers for returning to work. Preparation may include purchase of personal protective equipment, touch-less thermometers, and sanitizer stations, training on new policies and procedures, and designation of certain staff members to coordinate activities.

First Aid, AED, CPR (Online)
May 5th – 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.
Every job site is required to have someone certified in first aid. Are you in compliance? This course teaches the principles of basic life support for adults. The course details “hands-only” CPR, first aid, choking in adults, signs, and symptoms of heart attack and stroke, and treatment for shock. It explains how AEDs work, and why they’re a critical part of emergency cardiac care.

Excavations Trenching & Shoring (Online)
May 7th – 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Excavation and trenching represent one of the most hazardous operations engaged in by construction workers. This program is intended to educate workers and project managers about the hazards associated with and safeguards needed to protect workers during excavation activities. In this program participants will learn the rules contained in both MIOSHA’s CS Part 9: Excavation Standard, CS Part 15: for excavation equipment and OSHA’s 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P Excavation Standard.

Root Cause Analysis – Level 1 – Facilitator (Online)
May 12-13 – 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
This course will provide the knowledge and tools for participants to gain an understanding of the factors that affect culture and how it impacts safety performance. Management Leadership/Commitment and Employee Involvement are the most critical components of having an effective Safety and Health Management System (SHMS). This course will use data, examples, case studies, and activities to illustrate best practices and assist participants in improving their company’s safety culture.

EPA RRP Lead Renovator Refresher Course
May 19th – 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
This
refresher
course is the EPA Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP), a half-day course that provides basic lead-based paint information to contractors who perform renovations, repairs, and painting activities in houses built before 1978 or child-occupied facilities, as required by EPA and the State of MI. Course topics include: lead characteristics, uses, health effects on adults and children, lead-safe work practices to minimize lead containing dust during work activities, negative lead assessments, personal protection equipment, training of non-certified workers, and more. Successful completion of this course and award of the training certificate qualifies the trainee as a Certified Renovator.

Prevailing Wage Compliance
May 19th – 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
You should attend this session if you are a small contractor bidding ARRA (Recovery Act) MDOT Highway, Schools, University, and Heavy Construction Projects. This introduction to Prevailing Wage will cover Michigan's Prevailing Wage Act 166, as well as the Federal Davis-Bacon Act, wage determination, worker classifications, fringe benefit credits, and contractor responsibilities.

Project Management and Supervision
May 20th – 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
This course provides a thorough presentation of the principles used in Project Management. Participants receive instruction in effective management of projects to enable them to remain competitive and successful in today’s construction environment. The project environment is discussed, as well as tools to plan organizational response to work. Project management implementation is explained including the effective management of resources. Projects rarely go according to plan – strategy and tactics are explained to manage project change, and effective project closeout is discussed.

Ground Supported Scaffold – Competent Person
May 21st - 22nd – 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
This program will cover the provisions for the safe use of ground supported scaffold systems in accordance with MIOSHA Part 12: Scaffolds & Scaffold Platforms, OSHA Subpart L, and industry best practices. The program will be a mixture of lecture, case study review, and hands-on activities utilizing a 1/3 scale training scaffold frame system

|
|
The next CAMSafety meeting takes place on May 11th as a videoconference. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the CAM Safety Achievement Gold Award winners' presentations. On Friday, May 1st at 11:00 a.m., join Tracey Alfonsi, Director of Member Services, for a tutorial on how to use the CAM Virtual Planroom to identify projects available for bid. This webinar is available to anyone interested in learning more, including current subscribers who may need a refresher and companies who have never tried the Virtual Planroom.

Woods Construction on Retail Construction Environment
|
|
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s executive order to enforce social distancing came on March 24, advising that people stay six feet apart to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The distance was troubling for Woods Construction President John Bodary. “If we are hanging a sheet of drywall, how can our guys stay six feet away from each other?”

Michigan Safety Conference Online Learning Series Coming in June
|
|
The Michigan Safety Conference (MSC) has received a mini-grant from MIOSHA, Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, to build an Online Learning Management System (LMS), partnering with TorranceLearning.
The goal is to have the Inaugural MSC Online Learning Series available by June 1. MSC plans to offer 10 courses at a cost of $30.00 per one-hour course. This series will allow participants to attend from their computers and view programs. Both a generic CEU certificate will be provided, indicating one hour of participation per course. A CEU certificate from Grand Valley State University for .16 credit per hour of training will also be available.
