November 2019

Grateful, thankful, blessed... words that always resonate this time of year. It's the season to reflect on all the positives in our lives, and being a part of your wellness journey is one of them!

To our soldiers and veterans on Veterans Day and always, we thank you for your sacrifice and your heroism... and to all, we wish a bountiful feast of health, love, laughter and friendship this Thanksgiving.

Please note our office will be closed on Thursday, November 28th and Friday the 29th, and remember to make your health a priority during the hustle-bustle of the coming weeks.  Regular chiropractic appointments can help bolster your immune system so you can enjoy all the festivities the season brings.

Yours in Health,

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Brent Reynolds

Celebrating Healthy Skin November

"Love the skin you're in" was a familiar ad slogan a decade ago that promoted products to fight aging and preserve beauty.   But the truth is, the health and beauty of our body's largest organ is more than topical cleansers and creams. It starts with a healthy diet and plenty of water, pre- and probiotics that improve gut health, and restorative sleep, all of which have an impact on the skin's appearance.  Being vigilant about the products that make contact with your skin, such as fragrances, makeup, shampoos, body washes and hand sanitizers, which can enter the bloodstream in just 26 seconds, is another important step in preserving the health of your skin.

Healthy Skin Month is a good time to remind all consumers to become educated about and learn to identify commonly used product ingredients that are harmful to the skin and overall wellness, i.e. parabens, phthalates, lead and triclosan. Bio accumulation, the gradual buildup of harmful substances in the body from exposure to chemicals in frequently used products, contributes to a wide array of chronic diseases.

How many toxins can your body be exposed to before being at risk for an adverse health event?  Each person has his/her own threshold.   Minimize your risk by opting for pure skin care, cleaning and beauty products that protect and enhance the skin's health.  Check out Dr. Chiappino's video above for information on how essential oils-based products like those from Young Living offer a healthy alternative to over-the-counter products.  You can also give her office a call at 631-265-1223, or attend one of her monthly workshops (see below).
Massage Therapy Beats Chemo Pain

Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN), the damage to nerves that control sensation and mobility, can profoundly affect quality of life for those who are undergoing cancer treatment. The pain, burning, tingling and loss of feeling in the extremities is often so debilitating that many patients skip therapy sessions, raising the risk of cancer recurrence.

In our last newsletter, we discussed how neurofeedback and acupuncture can help mitigate the effects of CIPN. Since then, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has published its recommendations for beneficial approaches to alleviating CIPN, which now includes massage therapy for not only pain, but also for relief of anxiety and mood changes that are commonly experienced by cancer patients, as well as acute nausea and vomiting.

An integrative approach to managing the side effects of chemotherapy treatments is key to achieving quality of life for those living with cancer.  If you or a loved one is suffering from cancer treatment side effects, contact our office to discuss a naturally effective approach that can aid in your recovery. 631-265-1223.

Trans Fats: Gone But Not Quite Forgotten...and Now A Dementia Link
variety_cookies.jpg

In July 2018, the FDA banned U.S. manufact-
urers from using artificial trans fatty acids, a.k.a. trans fats, in processed foods to extend shelf life and flavor. The additives were found to elevate bad (LDL) cholesterol levels and lower (HDL) cholesterol levels, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke and Type 2 diabetes. Although banned, trans fats can still be found in many foods, including cakes, pie crusts, biscuits, crackers and stick margarine due to the fact that products manufactured before the July 2018 are still permitted to be distributed until January 2021, per FDA regulations.

A new study out last month in the journal Neurology now establishes a link between trans fats and dementia, reporting that participants in the highest blood trans fat study group had a 52% higher chance of developing dementia. Researchers noted that the FDA ban contains a provision allowing foods containing less than 0.5 grams of trans fats per serving to be labeled as having "0 grams" of trans fats; consumption of these dubiously labeled products means that harmful levels can accumulate in the body if multiple servings of foods containing even trace amounts of the substance are eaten.

A reminder as we approach the holiday season:  Be vigilant about reading labels on products you are purchasing for your family feasts. Sweet pastries are cited as the strongest contributor of trans fats, followed by margarine, candies, caramels, chewing gum, and croissants. Labels having "partially hydrogenated" ingredients are a key clue that the product contains trans fats; if opting to make your own desserts, refrain from using vegetable shortening and margarine sticks to help protect your heart, brain and overall health -- and your holiday guests' health, too.
