Day 25: Back to India to Visit Jodhpur and Recycled Metal Animals

Destination:   Jodhpur, India
Jodhpur is the second largest city in the state of Rajasthan located in northwestern India. It is situated on a broad expanse of high sand hills, and its north and northwest areas form part of the Thar (Great Indian) Desert. The climate of Jodhpur is hot and semi-arid during its nearly year-long dry season averaging 90°F daily but contains a brief rainy season with temperatures around 66°F from late June to September.

Fun Facts:

Jodhpur is famously known as the Blue City. Originally the buildings were painted blue to signify that they were occupied by Brahmins, the highest caste in India.

Also:  Mehrangarh Fort (pictured above) is built on a rock precipice that dominates the city and contains the maharajah's palace and a historical museum (below).

And, in case you were wondering, yes, this is where jodhpurs got their name. These unusual pants were designed by the Maharaja of Jodhpur's son, Pratap Singh, and worn by his polo team when visiting the Queen of England in 1897.

Art Form:  Recycled Metal Animals from Culturas Trading
The craft of making the Culturas whimsical metal animals takes both creativity and strength. The metal is hand cut and shaped using simple tools by craftsmen in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

Some of the pieces include recycled metal printed with the lettering or advertising of the original container. Paint in bright colors adds charm and details to each animal. A rusty patina on some of the animals adds additional interest to each piece.

The appeal of these decorative pieces is in their fun, folk art interpretation of familiar animals. Finding a balance between production and creativity is an important part of handmade handicrafts.  Although the pattern may be standard, every piece is unique because the individual artist's interpretation and skill shines through.

The Company: Cultural Trading Company
Culturas Trading Company was started in 1995 by Theresa Lemman and Kymberlie Landgraf because of their love for

folk art and interest in helping to preserve the traditional crafts of Mexico and India. The business was started on little more than a shoestring, with lots of faith, enormous trust and often a little bit of luck. They have traveled thousands of miles, had many adventures and have always managed to climb up, over and sometimes under the many learning curves which always appear in the pursuit of handicrafts.

Their long term relationships  with family, friends and
CUT Artist Daughter
especially their talented artists has encouraged them to build a business that benefits eeryone fairly. In India they work directly with artisans, as well as purchasing from fair trade co-operatives and suppliers which have received certification for meeting set standards for fair wages and working conditions.

Where to next? Stay tuned!

I hope these playful animals full of personality brought a smile to your face.  They always do for me.  I am continually amazed how artisans can take discarded metal cans and steel drums and create such delightful and whimsical animals.

After almost two months of having our store closed in Brookside, we will  re-open today (Friday, May 15) from 11 am to 5 pm.   We look forward to having you explore the "world" inside our store and see in person all the hand-made products we've been exploring on these "journeys."

We're excited to welcome you but there will be noticeable changes both visually and with procedures.

If you missed my longer letter yesterday, here's the short story:
  *  We will welcome 6 customers into the store at a time.
  * We will have hand sanitizer right inside our door and will require its use before you shop.
  * We'll wear masks to protect you, and ask that you wear masks to protect us.
  * If you forget your mask, we'll have disposable face coverings available for you.
  * Please note that our restroom will be unavailable.
  * We will only accept credit card payments; no checks or cash.
  * Our store will be open Friday through Sunday and then closed Monday and Tuesday of next week. All of our shopping hours are listed below my signature.

This new journey for all of us will no doubt have more twists and turns. We are grateful for your support and understanding and ask for your patience as we shop together but differently.

For those of you who cannot or choose not to shop in our Brookside store right now, we thank you for your continued online shopping support. And, yes, we plan to continue our global "journeys" with additions to our online store.

And I can't say it enough times -  YOU are an important part of what makes World's Window so special!  THANK YOU!
