Fall 2021
From The Executive Director
Elizabeth Willson Moss
As I write, the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus is turning our caring community, the rest of our state, country and world into stress-filled and elusive hot spots of rising case numbers. I so wish it were not true, but unfortunately, it is impossible to deny. Especially when our nonprofit’s mission is as essential as Interfaith Assistance Ministry’s work to provide crisis services.

We feed hungry children. We feed their parents. We feed frail grandmas and grandpas. We clothe growing babies, toddlers, children, teenagers and adults. We help break the cycle of poverty that leads to new homeless residents of Henderson County, whenever possible. We help prevent heatstroke in the summer, help kids do their homework and keep families warm in the winter by helping pay overdue power, gas and heating fuel bills.

IAM helps ensure those we serve are well equipped with personal hygiene and cleaning needs. We provide gasoline vouchers and bus tickets when a neighbor in need lacks transportation. We provide translators for Latino families who need assistance and Latino foods. And because of the rapidly rising cases of Delta-related COVID, we restarted our partnership with the Council on Aging to provide a week’s worth of emergency food, traditional or Latino foods, to families and individuals who are quarantined with COVID and lack transportation.

Now, as we head back into more uncertain times with the ongoing pandemic, please be assured that the staff, volunteers, and dedicated board members at IAM will continue to find safe and efficient ways to serve our community. The challenges we face as an organization have never been greater. That said, we remain resolute in our commitment to our mission. We are determined to continue meeting that challenge so children and adults don’t suffer.

Thanks to the caring hearts of our volunteers, staff and donors, we provide hands that lift people up and work hard to catch families and individuals who would otherwise fall through the cracks into the pain-filled ranks of those who live at or below the poverty line. Thanks to all who have gotten vaccinated to help slow the spread of the ever-more threatening variants of the coronavirus.

Because of you dear friends, IAM has thrived through its first 36 years. As we face another time of emotionally and physically draining service during this second and even scarier round of COVID, we ask you to please give again – or for the first time – to our 2021 IAM COVID Challenge. We just had to cancel our only in-person 2021 fundraising event so we don’t contribute to spreading this more contagious variant that is now affecting local residents in their 30s and 40s and their children.

Please help us help our neighbors in greatest need. Thank you for your generous support of IAM and our mission.

Blessings,

Celebrating Emily McDuffy
IAM wishes to extend a heartfelt “Thank You!” to our Co-Manager of Social Services, Emily McDuffy, who is stepping back from her duties at IAM after 11 years of excellent service.

Emily was a key part of IAM’s tremendous growth and expanded outreach during the past decade. Most importantly, Emily’s heart for helping impacted thousands of lives during her time at IAM. “It’s just a great feeling to go to work,” says Emily, “and know that you are going to make a difference in people’s lives.”

Emily did make a difference—in our neighbors’ lives and in the lives of all of us that had the pleasure of working alongside her at IAM.

Thank you, Emily!
Thank You MANNA FoodBank
IAM wants to thank MANNA FoodBank for their invaluable assistance by supplying IAM with food and support through the TEFAP distribution program. Our neighbors in need are benefiting greatly from the quality of food they receive because of MANNA.

Thank you MANNA for advocating on our behalf to provide healthy and nutritious food to distribute!
IAM's 2020 Impact Report
Last year was the most challenging year IAM has faced since our founding in 1984. Demand for our services reached unprecedented levels with more than 26,000 service touches during 2020 – almost double the number of service touches for 2019.

In every service category offered by IAM, we saw dramatic increases in requests for assistance with basic needs. Fortunately, your incredible generosity and compassion made it possible for IAM to make it through 2020, not just somehow, but triumphantly!

Thank you!

Join IAM's 2021 Hunger Walk
The 2021 IAM Hunger Walk for the Henderson County Hunger Coalition will be held on October 1, at The Park at Flat Rock. All are invited to walk with us. IAM will provide snacks and water. Let us know if you plan to walk and send us your T-shirt size. This year’s shirts are purple!

The Henderson County Hunger Coalition Hunger Walk is the coalition's major fundraiser and proceeds go to Henderson County agencies struggling to provide food to needy families in our community. You can participate in this worthy cause in two ways:

  • Sign up to be a walker, gathering pledges from your neighbors, friends, family and church congregation - and then come walk with IAM!
  • Be a sponsor for a walker or a team.

Partnership with City of Hendersonville
IAM is proud to partner with the City of Hendersonville in the distribution of $160,000 of the American Rescue Plan funds received by the City.

The $160,000 has been earmarked to assist Henderson County residents to pay delinquent water bills and accrued penalties. IAM will act as the processing agent for resident requests for these funds.

Final details of the process are pending, but we look forward to assisting the City of Hendersonville and our neighbors in need recover from the devastating economic effects of the pandemic. Working together, we will help them keep the water running in their homes!
IAM's Updated COVID-19 Protocols
After consulting with an array of local health officials, Interfaith Assistance Ministry will return to assisting our neighbors in need via telephone until this surge of the Delta-variant diminishes.

We are taking this step to protect the health and safety of our much-needed workforce of volunteers and staff. Community spread of COVID19 infections reached 12,469 cases in Henderson County this week. That’s an increase of 630 new cases, the majority representing unvaccinated residents, in just one week.
Our hospitals are reporting near capacity levels for COVID cases, according to Steve Smith, director of Henderson County’s Department of Public Health. He also asked everyone to continue urging anyone who is unvaccinated to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Unvaccinated people are four times more likely to acquire COVID19 and 15% more likely to die from COVID than those who are vaccinated.

IAM will use the same interviewing procedures we used during the first COVID19 surge. We will speak to our neighbors on their cell phones and accept documents through the front door with the protection of a plastic shield. Neighbors who do not have a cell phone will be able to call us on an IAM landline, which will be placed on the table just inside the front door on the outside of the plastic barrier.

It is a difficult decision because most of our neighbors prefer speaking to us face-to-face and shopping for themselves and their families in our Clothing Closet. Our Clothing Assistance Department volunteers will fill orders as well as they can, based on the information we get from our neighbors.

Thank you volunteers for continuing to work here to help our neighbors who struggle so much to survive. You are the helping hands and caring hearts that make IAM an invaluable part of our community.
IAM Hosts Community Assembly Meeting
