Virtual City of SSF Town Hall
Join the Mayor and City Manager to discuss COVID-19 related issues

On  Monday, March 30 at 6:00 p.m. , South San Francisco Mayor Rich Garbarino and City Manager Mike Futrell will host a virtual Town Hall on GoToMeeting.

GoToMeeting is a teleconferencing tool that will enable users to watch and/or call from their computers or mobile devices to hear the Mayor and City Manager give a live update. This tool is free. The Town Hall will give you a chance to ask questions about the current shelter in place, COVID-19, the City's role, and where to find more information.

During the town hall, you will also be able to send questions via the "live chat" option on GoToMeeting from your computer.
Facility and Program Closures/ Cancellation/ Postponements Extended through April 15

Childcare Programs Closed Until May 1
The City of South San Francisco continues to monitor the public health situation in our community, including participating in the San Mateo County COVID-19 briefings as well as monitoring advisories issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As part of the City's response to COVID-19, we have extended the date of most Parks and Recreation facility and program closures from April 5, 2020 to the new date of April 15, 2020 . Childcare programs will be closed until May 1, 2020 ( see Childcare Program Notice, below ). 

The City will also continue working under modified operations through April 15, 2020. The City remains open, however operations will occur online or over the phone to limit in-person contact.

Childcare Program Notice
Childcare Program Closures through May 1

On March 25, 2020, Seven Bay Area county health officers, in collaboration with their six county superintendents of schools have made a unified, regional decision to  extend school closures and student dismissals from regular school attendance through May 1, 2020 , as a precautionary measure to slow the spread of COVID-19. In response to this news, the City is also extending the closures of the following childcare programs through May 1, 2020 :

Little Steps Preschool
Siebecker Preschool
Westborough Preschool
Buri Buri Before & After School Program
Monte Verde Before & After School Program
Ponderosa Before & After School Program
Spruce Before & After School Program
Los Cerritos REAL program
Martin REAL Program


Registration for Summer Camp
New instructions will be announced this week

We are working on finalizing the details on a new registration process for summer camp and will announce the new instructions later this week. Participants who pre-registered for a lottery number will receive an e-mail with the new registration instructions. Instructions will also be available at www.ssf.net/childcare .


Before and After School Recreation Program Registration
Postponed - New registration date to be announced

The City of South San Francisco Parks & Recreation Department will be accepting lottery applications for the available spaces at the licensed After School Recreation Programs at Buri Buri, Monte Verde, Ponderosa, and Spruce Elementary Schools, and the REAL Programs at Los Cerritos and Martin Elementary Schools. Enrollment in the program will be determined by lottery.

Acceptance of lottery applications for the Before and After School Recreation Program has been postponed. A new date and more information will be posted at www.ssf.net/childcare .
Park Closures
Park amenities that encourage contact or close gatherings have been closed. These include playgrounds, park restrooms, drinking fountains, sports courts, dog parks, picnic areas, and the skate park.

We do understand that parks provide many public health benefits when used appropriately. Therefore, please help us keep them open and safe by taking these basic social distancing practices seriously:

  • Practice social distancing. Maintain a distance of 6 feet or more from other visitors. Pathways in parks are not wide enough everywhere, so provide space by moving to an adjacent path. Take care not to trample plants.
  • Visit another time. If social distancing is difficult, stay closer to home for your outdoor recreation.
  • Use the bathroom at home. The restrooms in the parks are closed.
  • Do not touch anything. We cannot ensure the adequate disinfection of railings, benches, picnic benches, etc.
  • Keep your trash. Pack it in, pack it out to ease the burden on reduced staff.

During these challenging times, the South San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department is still committed to providing fun, educational, and recreational resources for community members of all ages! We hope you will enjoy our NEW Virtual Recreation & Resource Center. The South San Francisco Community Volunteer Corps is a City-led initiative with partnerships with the City’s core service agency, service clubs, schools, and faith-based organizations to solicit and train volunteers in providing essential services, supporting the South San Francisco population who are medically disabled, older adults, homebound, caregivers, and financially disadvantaged, during the State of Emergency and government mandates to shelter in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The County of San Mateo has worked with the Silicon Valley Community Foundation to create a San Mateo County-specific fund named the San Mateo County Strong Fund . The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved an initial $3 million in Measure K funds to launch the San Mateo County Strong Fund . The purpose of this fund will be to address the swift and unexpected impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic at a very local level by helping the following most-impacted groups.  We are asking folks who are able to do so, please make a tax-deductible donation today at www.SMCStrong.org to support individuals and families, non-profits serving our most vulnerable residents, small business owners, and self-employed residents hit hardest by California’s state-wide COVID-19 Shelter in Place  order.  ALL money donated will stay inside San Mateo County and not one penny will go elsewhere, so you can have confidence that you are helping your neighbors and the local small business and self-employed people in your community. In challenging times like this, it’s more important than ever that we all pull together in San Mateo County.
