Distinctly Bronze is Back
Glen Hascall, Past Chair
Yes, after over two years of waiting, the West Coast version of Distinctly Bronze will kick off on Oct. 7th with a final concert on Sunday afternoon the 10th. This year around 100 advanced handbell ringers from around the United States and some foreign countries will converge on the Embassy Suites Hotel near the Washington Square mall in the greater Portland area to tackle some of the most difficult music written for handbells. The director for the event is Beth Judd from Austin, TX.
At this point participants have been assigned their positions, have purchased their music and are studying their parts at home. On the afternoon of the 7th all will come together at the hotel and begin rehearsing as a massed group. Available to the ringers will be a 7-octave set of bells, a 6-octave set and several 5 octave sets. Hand chimes will range from C2 through G8.
The final concert will be held on Sunday afternoon, the 10th, at 4:00PM and is open to the public. A small admission fee will be charged to help offset the costs of the event. Current Covid protocols for the State of Oregon will be enforced for both ringers and concert attendees (vaccinated and masked). If you are anywhere near the venue on the 10th and love the playing of handbells, you are encouraged to stop by and take in the concert. A number of Area 10 ringers will be participating and we look forward to seeing you there.
20th International Handbell Symposium & Associated Events 2022
July 30-August 6, Nashville, Tennessee
Have you ever had the thrill of playing handbells with hundreds of excited handbell musicians who come from all around the globe? I can tell you from experience that the room is electric!
Most of us know about Handbell Musicians of America. We are not alone! There are also guilds in Japan, Australasia, Korea, Canada, Great Britain, Hong Kong and Singapore. Every two years one of these guilds hosts a festival and invites the world. In 2022, the United States will be the lucky host with an 8-day event in Nashville, Tennessee.
As information becomes available, the Campanologist will keep you updated because we hope you will join fellow musicians from Area 10 at this event. To make this easier, we will sponsor an Area 10 choir.
To help you, we’ll keep a list of interested folks and information on our Area 10 Website. Your job will be to register, purchase your music, practice and get to Nashville!
There will be a few rehearsals in the Portland Metro area in June and July with the possibility of joining in via Zoom (tough but better than practicing all by yourself!!). Then we’ll gather in Nashville and have the time of our lives with handbell peeps from around the globe.
Hope to see you on the road to Nashville.
Best, Ellie Hodder
Membership Chair, Area 10
