Call for Proposals
Research Symposium Call for Proposals | Diversity & Inclusion in Research & Teaching Organization (DIRECTO) at Florida State University

DIRECTO  seeks to provide opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and alumni to share their experiences and ideas about diversity and inclusion in research and teaching on campus and the community beyond FSU. DIRECTO is an interdisciplinary graduate-student run organization that seeks to provide opportunities for the community to engage in dialogue about how to promote diversity, inclusion, and equity in research and teaching. 

Our symposium offers several opportunities in which your participation will be a fundamental addition to our shared endeavor towards supporting differences, empathy, and creating opportunities for conversation and collaboration.

We host three signature events each year to advance our goals. Our biggest event is our symposium, which takes place each fall. Last year, this event was comprised of plenary sessions with two keynote speakers, a variety of breakout sessions with concurrent discussions around diversity and inclusion, a poster session, and a student panel. Our symposium offers several opportunities in which participation by faculty, students, and administrators of your institution could be a fundamental addition to our endeavor towards supporting differences, empathy, and creating opportunities for conversation and collaboration.

This fall, we will host our third annual symposium on  Friday, September 18th, 2020 . Our keynote speakers this year are Dr. Derald Wing-Sue, Professor of Psychology at Columbia University, and Dr. Erin O’Hara O’Connor, Dean and Professor of the Florida State University College of Law.

Our Board of Directors is excited to announce that we are currently seeking presenters for breakout sessions and/or poster sessions to make this a truly transformational event. We were fortunate to have many of the members of the FAMU community present last year offering their valuable insight during the symposium and we would be delighted to partner again. Do You Need Training? | The Office of Instructional Technology Offers Certification
If you will be teaching online this fall semester and need to receive updated instructional training, please contact Dean Watson and your department chair to request an opportunity (limited space available) for the summer session.

Shared Communication | Office of the Provost 
The online certification program—designed to help faculty provide high-quality online instruction—will include an initial two-hour kickoff session that includes a program overview and a question and answer session. The remainder of the program will consist of five modules and routine appointments with the online certification program team, all of which are available at times convenient to the participants.
 
The summer course begins on Monday, June 29, 2020.
Research and Innovation | SMART Academies | Grant Renewal
FAMU SMART Academies Continues to Impact K-12
The FAMU 21 st  Century Community Learning Center, FAMU SMART Academies 2020 Virtual Summer Program proposal received approval by the Bureau of Family and Community Outreach,    21 st  Century Community Learning Centers Program, Florida Department of Education with immediate implementation. As per the proposal, the program will include a three-day online professional development training session for team members designed to heighten staff competence with online instruction and other logistics for virtual learning.
 
Congratulations to Dr. Rufus Ellis , Director and Professor for his leadership! Additionally, we appreciate Superintendent Michael Johnson for his support in carrying the program out at FAMU DRS.    This program approval status would not be possible without a collective team based approach.  
Alumni Spotlight | Chloee Baker Wilson
Learn About Our Alumni Spotlight | Chloee Baker Wilson
Chloee Baker Wilson is our featured alumni spotlight this week. Chloee is currently a teacher at Bond Elementary School in Tallahassee, Florida – the exact same school in which she served as an intern while studying at FAMU. After graduating in 2015 with a 3.82 grade point average, she began her teaching career at Havana Magnet School as a first grade teacher.

Chloee’s love for seeing her students excel gives her daily motivation. She has taught kindergarten, first grade, and is now teaching third grade. Her teaching style includes a mixture of creativity, spunk, and enthusiasm, and her students love every minute of it! Chloee devotes time to students before and after school as well as during summer months. During this current pandemic, Chloee teaches some of her students via distance learning daily to ensure the achievement gap is bridged and they will be prepared for the next school term.

Chloee has served on many committees while teaching, and is loved by her colleagues. Her pleasing personality caused her colleagues to vote her as the 2017-2018 Rookie Teacher of the Year at Havana Magnet School. Chloee stated,
“I appreciate every aspect of my degree from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University College of Education. I was able to reach my goals because the FAMU COE faculty held me to a high standard of excellence. It is my goal to maintain that standard, and that has made me the teacher I am today.”
Staff Spotlight | Audrey Franklin

Ms. Audrey Franklin is the cafeteria manager for FAMU's DRS. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Ms. Franklin has served over 45,000!

Personal Bio:
“My name is Audrey Franklin. I was born in Sopchoppy, Florida. I am the ninth of ten Children. I am very blessed to have three beautiful children: Arata, Reginald and Aoughtumn.

I am a strong believer in enjoying life to the fullest and never taking anyone or thing for granted. I have always been taught to always respect others in order to ensure the respect to be returned back. I put my all and very best ability into any and everything that I do. My passion has always circled around being a servant to others. For this is a part of my calling.

FAMU DRS is a part of my destiny and I have graciously been an employee for 9 ½ years. I work with phenomenal people and provide services to one of the most important groups of human beings, our Students.

I truly enjoy my long drives home which allows me to reflect on the day and be thankful for the journey. My past time is enjoying my family and home. Gardening, playing trivia games, watching TCM movies, and my doing greater works to the ministry."
COE Prepares Offices for COVID-19
Nearly every aspect of normal life has been affected by the spread of novel coronavirus and its associated disease, COVID-19. As Florida A&M University has begun reentry through a phased approach, the College of Education is using proactive measures to ensure that the students, faculty and staff are informed as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic and returning the Gore Education Complex under safe conditions.

The Office of the Dean, have been adhering to the recommendations of the CDC, local and state guidelines as outlined by the University Administration. Through regular leadership meetings, frequent email correspondence and news and information updates posted on the website, individuals have been well informed.

Dean Allyson Watson and the COE support staff have taken the appropriate actions to promote social distancing and measures to ensure that upon return we are promoting good health tips and recommendations. We have purchased additional materials for our staff such as face mask and sanitizing items. We have also worked with the leadership team to plan for classroom seating reduction to promote social distancing. Additionally, all reception areas throughout the Gore Educational Complex have sneeze barriers to serve as a safeguard.

College of Education | STRIKE Vision Plan
S |   STRATEGIC INITIATIVES - The FAMU COE will align closely with the university vision and mission to implement programs designed to increase academic achievement across undergraduate and graduate programs. Increase the teacher pipeline by partnering with our local districts and those across the state.
T |   TRUST -  The FAMU COE will build trust and offer transparency to our internal campus community and external school and community partners. We will build programs and engage others with truthful and meaningful practices.
R |   RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION -  Recruitment and Retention | The FAMU COE will tackle the national and state teacher shortage crisis and implement new strategies to recruit and retain teacher education majors. We will grow our graduate programs and be proactive in identifying the needs and gaps in state certification and test achievement. We will create pathways for gains from our education candidates and follow them into successful careers.
I |   INNOVATION AND RESEARCH -  The FAMU COE will create innovative and immersive learning experiences for our learners will promoting a solid research agenda and providing rich research expertise. We will provide rich teaching and learning with immersive technology for undergraduate and graduate programs.
K |  K-20 SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIPS -  The FAMU COE will work closely as a key partner with FAMU DRS and surrounding county schools to identify the needs of the educational community and utilize our faculty, staff, and students to meet those needs.
E |   ENGAGEMENT IN THE COMMUNITY, THE STATE AND THE NATION -  The FAMU COE will increase the number of privately funded scholarships to support our students and faculty by promoting our programs and creating forums for exposure and visibility.
