School update
Last week, Governor Laura Kelly issued two orders related to school reopenings.
- EO-20-59 ordered masks or face coverings for all K-12 faculty, staff, and students; adoption of social distancing measures; adoption of temperature checks before entering school buildings each morning; and hand sanitizer availability, with students and faculty sanitizing hands not less than once each hour. This order has been signed and is effective August 10.
- The second order was to delay the reopening of schools until after Labor Day (Monday, September 7) because of the rise in COVID-19 cases in Kansas. This order required affirmation by the State Board of Education. The Board opted not to affirm the order during its July 22 meeting.
All decisions about start date; whether to offer in-person, remote learning, or a hybrid model; and operations (aside from above-mentioned procedures) will be made by local school boards.

Ruby's Wish: A healthy Westmoreland
|
|
Ruby Zabel
, a life-long resident of Westmoreland, was passionate about life, active in her community, and loved to spend time with her family and in her flower garden. As Ruby fought cancer, she was grateful to the

Ruby’s Wish envisions the security and comfort of continuing personal local healthcare for the Westmoreland community.
A memorial fund has been established for Ruby’s Wish, honoring the Westmoreland Clinic. Table tents around town explain the fund and depict red day lilies, one of Ruby’s many favorite perennial flowers.
Donations of any amount are welcome

Vote in the August 4 Kansas Primary
|
|
The Kansas Primary is August 4!
Hospital employees who work long shifts or odd hours can find it challenging to arrive at the voting booth before the polls close on election days.
Kansas allows absentee voting and “no-excuse” early voting.
Do you know the difference, and do you know the steps involved with each option?
If your answer is no, you are not alone! Here's a quick primer.
- All Kansas voters can vote by mail for any reason. There are no special eligibility requirements, but you do need to submit an advance ballot application. In light of the pandemic, several Kansas counties have sent advance ballot applications to all registered voters; those who haven’t received one can download the application with detailed instructions from the Office of the Kansas Secretary of State website at www.sos.ks.gov. Your application must be received by county election officials on or before the Tuesday prior to the election (July 28 for the August primary, and October 27 for the November general election).
- Early voting means casting your ballot in person at a polling place prior to an election. Kansas permits no-excuse early voting, which means you do not have to provide a reason for voting early. Deadlines and polling locations vary by county – for more information, find the contact information for your County Election Officer on www.sos.ks.gov.
Remember, Kansas does require all voters to present valid photo identification when casting a ballot in person
, such as a driver’s license or nondriver’s identification card.
The 2020 election will be critical for choosing state and national leaders who care about building a healthy Kansas.
Your vote counts and your voice matters, so please be sure you are ready and able to cast your ballot for the future leadership of our state and our country.
