October 7, 2021
Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary

The midpoint of the first trimester was yesterday, October 6! I am so proud of all of the hard work put forth by our teachers, staff, students, and families to grow academically, spiritually, emotionally this school year.

Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Friday, October 8 virtually. The decision to hold conferences virtually again this year was first of all, to keep our teachers and parents as safe as possible and second, to allow flexibility for working parents so parents don't need to rush to school for a scheduled conference time. Sign ups for conferences were emailed last week. If you have any last minute changes, please email your homeroom teacher. Online sign-ups will close at 9:00 AM Friday morning. Review the attached guide for some tips on making the most of your conference time.

The October Baby Bottle Mission will run through October 22. Each student brought home a baby bottle this week to fill with change and return to school. The baby bottles will be returned to the Women's Centers where the funds raised will support mothers and babies.

The Walk-a-Thon is a little over 1 week away! T-shirts have been ordered and we need each family to help us reach our goal of raising $20,000 this year! Keep asking family, friends, and neighbors to pledge. If each St. Edward student can raise at least $75, we can make our goal a reality! To date, we have raised $14,209.91!!! Order forms for Fun Lunch on October 15 were emailed home on Tuesday and paper copies were sent home on Wednesday. Orders for Fun Lunch are due Friday, October 8, and hot lunch will not be served on the 15th.

Picture Day is next Wednesday, October 13. This is a dress up day for all students. Please refer to the uniform policy for appropriate out of uniform options. Color Portraits is accepting online orders for pictures and ordering information went home on Wednesday.

Next week, we will also celebrate the Feast of St. Edward as a school community of Wednesday the 13th. We will celebrate Mass in the morning and a Eucharistic Procession in the afternoon. SEPO has also generously purchased St. Edward decals for each student.

Social media once again rears its ugly head for us as parents and for our children. As students headed back into classrooms this fall, there were challenges shared on TikTok that encouraged students to complete various tasks/challenges at their schools. September's challenge was to vandalize a school bathroom. October's challenge is supposedly to smack a staff member on the backside. While I think that our students here at St. Ed's are far too awesome to participate in these challenges, it is a good opportunity for us as parents to talk to our children about what our children are seeing and sharing on social media, emphasizing how inappropriate these challenges are. Behavior along any of these lines will not be tolerated at St. Ed's and it is important for our children to know that we care enough about them to have these open conversations with them about what they see on social media.

St. Edward, pray for us!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Sara Lasica
Principal

Our Library needs your help!

Over the summer, the library underwent some summer cleaning. Much of the non-fiction book collection was thinned out because the topics were outdated. Book collections were moved around so that our younger students have more access to them, and some furniture was removed to make more space.

Thank you to Mrs. Starzyk, Mrs. Goon, and Mrs. Matejcak for volunteering to re-shelve books each week when the students return them. A school library is such a valuable aspect of the learning path for each student.

We are looking for some alternative shelving units that will make more of the books accessible to the younger students. If you know of any book stores closing or libraries renovating that would be willing to donate some library furniture, please let me know. Funds that we receive from our Scholastic Book Fair this fall will go toward new books and resources for the library too!
Illness Protocols

Please click here to review the illness protocols for the 21-22 School Year.

If you are a previous school volunteer and have not volunteered since before the pandemic, please email Mrs. Lasica directly to unlock your Virtus account.

If you are a new school volunteer, go to virtus.org and register as a new user linking your account to St. Edward School. New volunteers must submit two references to the school office that we will contact before your first volunteer opportunity.

All volunteers must complete the following:
  1. Virtus's Protecting God's Children training session or Keeping the Promise Alive recertification.
  2. Criminal background check completed through your Virtus account.
  3. CANTS 689 form, completed and returned to the school office.
  4. Mandated Reporter Training completed through the State of IL training website. Certificate of completion must be turned into the school office.
  5. CANTS 22 form, completed and returned to the school office.
  6. Archdiocesan Standards of Behavior, acknowledged through Virtus.

The Archdiocese has recently announced, that in accordance with the recent mandate by Governor Pritzker, that effective October 31st, all “regular volunteers” in schools must be fully vaccinated or submit to regular COVID testing in order to continue to volunteer at school.

We appreciate the many volunteers that assist the school in providing support to St. Edward programs, athletics and events. Thank you for your continued support in assisting the school community with these events and for your compliance with the new policy.

What constitutes a “regular” volunteer?
Anyone who volunteers and is in close contact with students or personnel for more than 15 minutes on a regular basis.
This applies to: coaches, room parents, lunch/recess helpers, parents who want to help in the library or classrooms or with school events such as Fun Fair.

What is the compliance process?
All parents who want to volunteer must show proof of vaccination by October 31st.
Make a copy of the proof of vaccination and send it to Mrs. Lasica at [email protected]. Copies of your vaccination card will be kept confidential and on file with other volunteer required paperwork.

After October 31st unvaccinated individuals must provide a weekly COVID test in order to continue to remain on the approved volunteer list.

We appreciate your cooperation with this policy.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
