Dear members, partners & friends,
The City of Boston announced this afternoon the
suspension of any large events
through Labor Day. We shouldn't be surprised, as we are anticipating the loosening of lockdown orders post May 18th -- we just can't plan a parade and facemasks will become "normal".
Life will continue to be different than before, including working-from-home, which most of you foresee is here to stay (see our poll result from last week below). In this context, read this Forbes column on
The Future of Work
.
Please see our
upcoming events
and join us for next week's
YP Stammtisch.
As always, we link to interesting stories we have been reading, and Andrew Adair is back with news from Washington.
Stay healthy.

Executive Director

This poll will close on May 14th at noon. We will publish the results in the next newsletter.

Translating Washington for Germany
|
|
Excerpt from Andrew Adair's
May 8 Newsletter:
Transatlantic Trade Updates:
"
Boeing / Airbus
. We have been monitoring whether Boeing would seek up to $17 billion in taxpayer rescue funds authorized in the CARES Act, believing that this would push the United States toward a settlement of the 16-year-old dispute with the European Union. Boeing, however,
has decided instead
to raise $25 billion through a bond offering, meaning that the company may be able to navigate the Covid-19 crisis without taxpayer aid. The company likely refused the aid based on the
restrictions that would have attached
to the company
, including an equity stake to the U.S. government and loss of managerial control. Given Boeing’s decision, the U.S. Trade Representative has hardened its position,
notifying the WTO
that there is “no valid basis” to allow the E.U. to retaliate."

Germany’s Angst Is Killing Its Coronavirus Tracing App
|
|
"
The COVID-19 app wars have also confronted Germany with a vexing paradox of Big Tech. Opting for a decentralized system might be better for privacy in some sense, but it also means relying more heavily on Google or Apple, reinforcing the sense that Europe has sleepwalked through the tech boom of the past decade.
