We are posting a brief day by day meditation from Forward Movement. It's a great way to start your morning! Just click on the website above.
Last Monday, our Holy Nativity Church staff had our first meeting of this new program year. While we would have liked to meet in person, we chose the safer "zoom" method of gathering this time. There were some new faces in the group: Wil Ching, our bookkeeper, arrived over the summer and Athena DeRasmo, our parish administrator, began her work last week. (Please see the article below, introducing Athena.) Lorraine Yamamoto and Chris Suzuki continue their able leadership of our music team, and Peggy Budlong and Cheri Keefer capably manage the Thrift Store. We will see the Rev. Jenn Latham on October 1.
As we look toward fall, please know that we have a wonderful staff to be grateful for. I have been inviting each of them to introduce themselves and meet vestry members at our regular meetings. I hope many in our congregation will come to know and work with them in coming days, as well. Thank you all! --Rev. Libby+
A PRAYER FOR LABOR DAY
Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good. In your holy name we pray. Amen.
Welcome New Administrator!
Athena DeRasmo
As a child growing up in Hawaii, Midway Island, and California I never experienced much in the way of seasons. It wasn’t until years later, as an adult, when I lived in Connecticut, NYC, and DC metro that I discovered the magic of the Earth falling asleep and waking back up and all the wonders in between.
So, without seasons where does the year begin and where does it end? Growing up, the arbitrary date of January 1st never made any sense to me, but the start of a new school year certainly did! Summer came to a close and it was back to school! For me, this was then and has always been the beginning of the new year. So here I am, not only starting a new year, but starting a new job – and I could not be more thrilled! As the Administrator I am eager to support Holy Nativity Church with the important day-to-day issues, and excited to be part of the new projects to come.
I have been back in Hawaii for four years now, after spending five years in Israel and 12 years in the Mid-Atlantic. I am back home to help out my elderly family. My two grown daughters live on the mainland on opposite coasts. I live in Hawaii Kai with my very sweet cat, Midnight.
It has not been an easy 18 months for anyone, and there may be more struggles ahead – but we will see them through together! Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is anything I can do to assist you. I will be in the office M-TH 9am – 12pm. Please feel free to stop by and say hello; and may we all enjoy a Happy New Year!

"DAUGHTERS OF THE KING"
On this past Sunday at HNC, long-time parishioner Beverly Toomey was presented with a silver cross, symbol of the Order of the Daughters of the King. Beverly was installed formally at St. Timothy's (Episcopal) Church in Aiea on August 1. Pictured below with the Rev. Dan Leatherman are members of the organization who gathered from congregations across the diocese for that event. Several women from the HNC chapter attended both services, including Lila Johnson, Sandra Braham, Tusi Mayer, and Delia Moore, who presented Beverly with her silver cross. The DOK website offers the following description of their Order:
"Members of The Order of the Daughters of the King are women who desire a closer walk with the Lord. We are Christian women, both lay and ordained, who are strengthened through the discipline of a Rule of Life and supported through the companionship of our sisters. We are all at different stages of our Christian journey...But no matter where we are on our sacred journeys, our primary goal is...to know Jesus Christ and to make Him known to others."
Congratulations, Beverly!

COVID SURGE PRECAUTIONS
During this current COVID surge we need to make some changes to worship that we hope will be temporary, but are very important. Everyone will be masked during worship services. Those receiving the Sacrament will please return to your seats before consuming it. We will limit singing and suspend coffee hour. Be assured that we will return to more relaxed practices just as soon as we are safely able to do so.
Mahalo for your kokua and prayers!

THIS MONDAY, 9/6/21 IS LABOR DAY!
Back in 1882, Peter J. McGuire (a union man) suggested setting aside a day for, “…a general holiday for the laboring classes, to honor those who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” Seeing that back then a typical work week could run 7 days a week and 12 hours a day – honoring the working class with a holiday was a very maverick idea! Nevertheless, Labor Day was signed into law by Grover Cleveland in 1894. So when we gather this Monday (in very safe & small groups), for cookouts and other recreation, let us remember the gritty individuals who worked so hard to improve their own lives, and pave the way for a more leisurely existence, one which allows us to praise, to labor, to love, and to live with gratitude.
Please email the church office at hncparish@gmail.com to let us know if you would like loved one to remain on or be added to the list.
