Volume XX | Month Day 20XX
Filmmaking in a time of Covid-19

Like many creative projects at the moment, ours is on partial hiatus while we hunker down and do the collective work of helping keep each other healthy, and taking care of those who need us. This doesn’t mean that the Green Box: At The Heart Of A Purple Heart is in total hibernation.

Of course Covid-19 made the Winter March shoot impossible. There was no way to bring together a full camera crew, a score of WWII re-enactors, and the logistics support necessary, while maintaining appropriate social isolation. And re-enactors in face-masks would not have been historically accurate.

It wasn’t just this great challenge and tragedy of our time that delayed our first major re-enactment for the film. There was NO snow! Massachusetts in February and no snow… a sad and rare circum-stance. Additionally we were short our funding goal as the pandemic hit.

But like others involved in creative endeavors across the globe waiting to see when and how we will emerge from the present crisis, our Green Box team is not idle. We continue with research by reaching out to additional experts, looking for more family stories, and continuing to identify possible grants.

While we don’t know when we will be able to go in the field again, into the field we WILL go. We have re-enactments to film that will bring Robert Kurtz’s heroic, tragic and inspiring story to life. We will interview historians - military, and medical experts - who will provide both historical and contemporary context. We have WWII footage and still photographs t o find, a score to create, a script to write, and a film to edit.

Fundraising is tough at the moment, and since we have not been paying ourselves salaries, we can’t take advantage of the Small Business Administration’s PPP program. So like most people during this pandemic, we are adjusting our time-table. Although our film will take longer to produce, we still hope to raise enough funding in the next 6 months to film the action packed re-enactments that tell the story of Robert Kurtz’s last flight and imprisonment. As for re-creating and filming the winter march - one of the most desperate and least remembered events of WWII - we will film that late in the year or early in 2021 when we find snow!

It is our privilege to tell the story of The Green Box - to share the courage and complexity that it raises. On reflection this seems an appropriate time to be making this film. It is an imperfect parallel, but there are thematic similarities between the acts of bravery being lived out today by people working to keep us safe (directly and indirectly), and those who did so 75 years ago.  If you would like to support our efforts, you can securely donate here: https://www.greenboxfilm.com/support
Co-Director Vicki Hughes interviewed Gerd Leitner in Austria last summer. He was eyewitness to the air battle over Ehrwald, Austria - the one that brought Robert Kurtz's B24 tumbling from the skies.

WE APPRECIATE YOU!!
We thank all of the contemporary heroes who are working to keep us safe and care for the sick. First responders, firefighters, doctors, nurses and other health care workers, essential workers like truck drivers, grocery store workers, communications technicians, trash collectors, postal workers and government officials to name a few. THANK YOU!!!
And to all who’ve contributed by staying home and social distancing, we appreciate those efforts to keep our communities safe. May God bless you and keep you healthy.
