Fifth Sunday of Lent
" ... as true man he wept for Lazarus his friend and as eternal God raised him
from the tomb, just as, taking pity on the human race, he leads us
by sacred mysteries to new life." (from the Eucharistic Prayer)

In community we join in prayer in and through Our Lord, Jesus Christ, for all who have died or been sickened by Covid-19 and all who care for the sick and dying.
Homily for the Fifth Sunday of Lent by the Cathedral Rector
Ongoing Ministry at the Cathedral Parish

The Cathedral and rectory office may be temporarily shuttered, but we continue to pray and work for you, our dear parishioners, friends and supporters! Staff members log in and work from home while our priests tend to everything from answering phone calls, to writing or videotaping homilies and reflections, to preparing for Holy Week. Following is a list of active parish ministries and operations:

Sunday Gospel Reflection

Today's gospel reading on the raising of Lazarus is a welcome one in these challenging times, writes Fr. Jack Hurley, as we hear how Jesus transforms tragedy and sadness into glory. In human sickness and death, Jesus sees the hand of the "ruler of the world," who, through Jesus' own glorification, is cast out. Read Fr. Jack's reflection .

Music for Reflection

During this time without public Masses, St. Matthew's Office of Music Ministries continues its Choral Highlights website feature, sharing the music that would have been sung by our Schola Cantorum. Enoy this video of last year's Schola rehearsal of "When Jesus Wept," by William Billings, a brief canon about the incarnate Jesus expressing his grief and mercy at the death of his friend Lazarus . See and listen to Choral Highlights. Visit the Schola's YouTube channel.
NEW Laudato Si' Faith Sharing Group

Pope Francis has invited Catholic communities around the world to celebrate Laudato Si’ Week, May 16 - 24. St. Matthew's Creation Care Team will host a 7-week, web-based series using Zoom on Sundays, 3 - 4pm, beginning April 5 and ending May 24 (no session Easter Sunday). Discover the message of Laudato Si’, Pope Francis' Encyclical On Care for our Common Home, study and discuss its meaning, and pray for global ecological conversion. To participate, email Phil Downey and Simone Seym at stmattcreationcareteam@gmail.com.
Prayer Resources

Never have most of us faced such distraction from prayer as we do this Lent. As we prepare for Holy Week, may we recommit to living a prayerful life - "the only necessary thing," as Henri Nouwen wrote. Our website resources include livestreamed Mass schedules, daily prayer helps, and links to Sunday homilies and Gospel reflections. See the resources listing. Read about special Indulgences. Visit the ADW special webpage .

We hope you find some of the links below helpful for your prayer life.

Mass Intentions

Msgr. Jameson, Fr. Benson, Fr. Hurley and Fr. Choi in their private Mass celebrations continue to remember the scheduled Mass intentions. In some instances an intention must be moved for remembrance on another date. Rest assured that all Mass intentions will be honored.
Holy Week and Easter 2020

Planning is underway for Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday liturgies to be livestreamed from the Cathedral so that we may unite in prayer and worship. Details on these celebrations and the livestreaming will be available this week. Worship aids will be made available online.
