"Above All Else, Keep on Loving"

The sermon this Sunday is based on I Peter where Peter tells us to keep on loving, no matter the circumstance. We are to especially keep on loving others – tough to do when we think of what others have done – but love for God and others is foundational to our faith.

A Note From Pastor Kim
Dear Loved Ones,

Today (May 21) is a minor festival of the church. Today we commemorate the Ascension of Our Lord. While the Ascension is referenced throughout the New Testament, the story is recounted primarily by Luke. In both his gospel (Luke 24:50-53) and his history of the early church (Acts 1:1-11) Luke tells how Jesus led his disciples outside the city of Jerusalem, blessed them, and then was lifted into heaven.

The Ascension of Jesus is a mysterious story. It doesn’t exactly fit our world view and raises many questions, yet it needs to be taken seriously for it is a fundamental belief of Christendom. All the major creeds of the church (The Athanasian, The Apostles’, and the Nicene) make reference to it. The Ascension is common in all our creeds so while it’s referred to as a Minor Festival, it is an essential belief of our faith.

In light of our current ‘sheltering in place’ situation where many wrestle with ‘being at church’ when unable to meet for worship, fellowship, etc. and others have wondered about God’s presence in the midst of a pandemic, the Ascension addresses these concerns. Through the Ascension we are assured of God’s ongoing presence, whether we gather together or are apart. In some ways the Ascension presents us with a paradox which is: Only as Jesus became physically absent from one time and one place could he be present at all times and in all places. Therefore, in his absence we are assured of his presence. That sounds strange to our ears, but that’s what a paradox is. It’s a statement that is seemingly contradictory or opposed to common sense and yet is ‘perhaps’ true.

When Martin Luther spoke of the Ascension he offered a warning. He said, “Beware, lest you think that because he is gone he is far away, for the opposite is true.” When he was here he was far from you. Now he is very near. That’s the “I am with you always” promise we find at the end of Matthew’s gospel.

You may have heard about the Sunday school teacher who asked her third grade Sunday school students which of the characters of the Bible they most preferred to be. One little boy said, “I’d like to be Moses and see how God divided the sea.” A little girl said, “I’d like to be Mary and hold baby Jesus in my arms.” And then one little guy said, “I’d like to have been the one called ‘Lo’ because Jesus said, ‘Lo, I will be with you always.’”

So, dear family, be assured of God’s presence and love no matter whether we gather as community or are sheltering in place as individuals.

Blessings,

Pastor Kim

Congratulations to this year’s Hope for Kidz Graduates and their Sponsors!
We are so proud of them as It has been such a difficult year with all the political strife and the shutdowns of the schools. The kids had to work extra hard to pass a strenuous national exam, but thirteen students did it! Normally we would have a party at church to celebrate, so consider this a virtual party for The Les Anglais class of 2020.

To the Sponsors: “Well done, good and faithful servants!"
An Update from RMI: There is no Covid 19 in Southern Haiti as of last week. Schools are closed right now, but hope to open in July and August so the students can catch up for the upcoming year. Because of your faithfulness as part of sponsoring 2,705 children, 10,600 children receive a hot lunch every day during school, and uniforms, and medical help when needed. Most importantly they are receiving a Christian education that will transform not only their earthly lives but their eternal lives.

Please consider renewing or sponsoring a child for the 2020-2021 school year.

From the OSLC Foundation
The OSLC Foundation Board of Directors held a meeting by way of a conference call May 7 where they awarded Haiti Mission $2,750 to purchase 50 food boxes and 200 face masks for the people of Les Anglais. They also awarded the Protestant Committee on Scouting $1,427 to be used for Chaplain expenses and Bibles for their summer camps. The Board adopted a Director Position Description. For those who may be interested in serving on the Foundation Board in the future you may click here to read the Description. The Directors expressed their appreciation to Carol Nordahl as she stepped down from the Board after 9 years of service, 6 of which were as President of the Board. Joanne Panning was appointed an interim director until election of directors can be held at the annual congregational meeting. The officers of the Foundation are: Joe DeBlois, President; Fritz Camp, Vice-President; Lisa Sindlinger, Secretary; and Wayne Pederson, Treasurer.
Remember you can create a lasting legacy by making a contribution to the OSLC Foundation.

During this COVID19 shutdown, we are often asked, "Is there something I can do to help the church?" Well, here's one important action you can take and it doesn't cost a dime!
Every time you watch an OSLC video worship service on YouTube, please click the "Like" button. Also, click "Subscribe" if you haven't done so already.  There is no cost!  These simple actions tell YouTube that Our Savior's is a growing and well received source of information that they will in turn present to viewers outside our immediate congregation. More "likes" and "subscribers" = more viewers!
Thank you for Liking and Subscribing!
