Successful RFQ Response

Earlier this year, CIRCA issued an RFQ for Engagement, Planning, Design, Architectural, and Engineering services for the Resilient Connecticut project. We had a wonderful response from a variety of talented teams.

After a thorough and difficult review process, we’ve selected a team for the Phase II regional planning phase. We’re currently negotiating the final scope of work and will announce the team in our next Roundup. Stay tuned!

CIRCA Recommended for Renewal as an Institute

I nstitutes at the University of Connecticut must submit reviews every five years to the UConn Academic Centers and Institutes Review Committee. As CIRCA approaches it's 6th birthday, we're excited to share the good news that the Office of the Provost is going to recommend to the Board of Trustees that CIRCA should be approved as an Institute of the University for another 5 years.

Connecticut’s Changing Forests Webinar: What it Means for Climate Resilience

The forests of Connecticut are entering a period of rapid change affecting forest composition, structure, and functioning. This presentation provides a basis for understanding forest climate mitigation and adaptation and provides context on trade-offs in decision-making surrounding forest lands.

Environmental Justice and Federal Climate Advocacy Webinar

As the climate crisis continues to unfold, US and global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise and the much needed federal action to address it is lacking. Join the Rochester People's Climate Coalition for a presentation and discussion to address these concerns through the lens of Environmental Justice and two specific pieces of legislation: the Green New Deal for Public Housing Act and the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act.

Preliminary Proposals Sought for 2021-2023 LIS Research

Connecticut Sea Grant and New York Sea Grant announce the Long Island Sound Study extra-mural research program. The program is currently open and will close on June 8, 2020 . The intent of this program is to fund research that will support the management of Long Island Sound and its resources. The Long Island Sound Study is a regional, community-based partnership to protect and restore the Sound.
Long Island Sound Futures Fund 2020

$3 million is available in environmental grants focusing on the Long Island Sound Watershed. Potential topics for planning or implementation grants include water quality, education and outreach, coastal resilience, sustainability, habitat restoration, species preservation, and restoring fish passages. Proposals are due by 11:59pm EST on June 2, 2020.

New ‘Living Shoreline’ in CT Proposed Near Former Katharine Hepburn Estate
New Haven Register - April 24, 2020

The Lynde Point Land Trust, Inc., recently submitted a permit application to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to implement a living shoreline to a vulnerable shoreline in Old Saybrook. The project design was completed with a grant from the Connecticut Institute for Resilience and Climate Adaptation.
Norwich Property Owners in High Flood Zones to See Insurance Rate Reduction
The Day - April 30, 2020

The city of Norwich's application to the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System was approved, and property owners along high-hazard flood zones in the city qualify for a 10% discount on national flood insurance starting May 1st.

Key COP26 Climate Summit Postponed to ‘Safeguard Lives’

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the decision has been made to postpone the COP26 climate summit until 2021. UNFCCC said the postponement would better enable all parties to focus on important climate issues while allowing more preparation time.
D.C.'s Department of Energy & Environment Proposes Major Changes to Flood Hazard Regulations

The Department of Energy & Environment in Washington, D.C., has announced its intent to propose significant changes to its flood hazard regulations at Title 20 DCMR Chapter 31. These changes are designed to make the District more resilient in the light of climate change, sea level rise, extreme rainfall events and various NOAA models that depict significant flooding in portions of the District by the year 2100.
City of Austin Releases Update on Climate Resilience Plan

Following the Environmental Commission’s unanimous vote in March to recommend the development of a  holistic resilience plan , the Office of Sustainability  released a memo  outlining its existing efforts as well as additional options to create a comprehensive and community-wide climate resilience strategy.

The Connecticut Institute for Resilience and Climate Adaptation's (CIRCA) mission is to increase the resilience and sustainability of vulnerable communities along Connecticut's coast and inland waterways to the growing impacts of climate change and extreme weather on the natural, built, and human environment. The institute is located at the University of Connecticut's Avery Point campus and includes faculty from across the university. CIRCA is a partnership between UConn and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP).
