WEEKLY UPDATE FROM REV. FLORENCE CAPLOW
THE NEW NORMAL?

Almost a week ago our Governor announced a “Stay at Home” order for the entire state of Illinois. I am proud of our elected leaders for moving swiftly and courageously. At that time few state leaders – not even the Governor of the hardest hit state of Washington,- had made such a radical decision. That’s real leadership. I have no doubt that many, many lives have been saved, even some of our own lives, by this decision. But it has certainly turned everything upside down, and created great hardship for some of the already most vulnerable. The order is only until April 7th, but I think we all know, in our heart of hearts, that “normal life” will not return for a long time. And to even refer to a “new normal” seems foolish, since every day something previously unimagined seems to happen.  Read More...
THIS SUNDAY'S SERVICE
DENISE CAWLEY & REV. FLORENCE CAPLOW
Sunday, March 29 at 10:15 a.m. via Live-stream

In this service we will explore simple ways we might incorporate spiritual practice into our lives, little by little. It doesn’t have to be scary or difficult. In fact, pathetic effort is ideal!

Denise Cawley is Unitarian Universalist minister in preliminary fellowship. This spring she will finish her Master of Divinity at Meadville Lombard Theological School where she also serves on the Education Committee and Board of Trustees. Denise has provided spiritual and emotional care chaplaincy at Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. Denise serves as the intern minister at Bradford Unitarian Universalist Community Church in Kenosha, WI. Read more about Denise...

From Randy Locke, Chair, UUCUC Board of Trustees

In order to continue to be proactive to minimize impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the UUCUC Board of Trustees has rescheduled the congregation’s annual meeting. While the meeting has historically been held early in May, changes to the bylaws last year specify that the annual meeting time is “to be determined by the Board of Trustees” (Article II, Section 1). UUCUC'S NEW "BUDDY SYSTEM"
Staying connected while
UUCUC facilities are closed

During this time of social distancing, staying in touch and checking in with each other is going to be very important. We hope you will consider being part of our "Buddy System" so we can care for one another.

You can sign up here: https://uucuc.breezechms.com/form/2184f1. Buddies will check in with each other regularly by phone to provide connection, companionship, and connections to help if needed. This is a great way to help each other.
JOYS AND SORROWS cards that specifically noted a request to print in eNews are featured in this section.

From the March 22, 202 Service

From Jennifer Bannon: Sorrow: for all of those who have lost jobs, or whose income is now insecure, including my niece, who is six months pregnant. Joy: thank you to everyone who participated in this morning’s mindfulness practice. It was much needed.

From Becky Densmore: I am grateful to the many organizations that have offered free online resources and access to digital means for parents and learners of all ages to ensure they can continue their learning journeys.

From Erin Dittmer: Sorrow for all of the students who are missing from classrooms all over the world. Joy for the small ways we find lightness and community during these dark times.

From Wendy Graves: Our beloved 4 & 1/2 year old standard poodle Sami had to be put down a few days ago. We are missing her joyful presence.

From Claudia Gross: Claudia Gross faces a new health challenge. She has a benign tumor on her pituitary gland. Surgery is expected, but plans are incomplete. Calls, messages and concern are welcome anytime. Claudia is not sick and the uncertainty is making David a bit crazy.

From James Hannum: A joy for Dave Joncich's return to health. He was recently hospitalized for pneumonia for 5 days and is now home.

From Deanna Hence: Joy that I received the National Science Foundation CAREER award, and also that I am recovering well from a neck injury. The 5-year grant will enable me to create support systems for underrepresented students entering the Atmospheric Science program at UIUC. I am grateful to all of those that supported me in the long process of both submitting that grant and healing.

From Jenny Hunt: Joy that we can be together in this virtual space with the beauty of the rose window and the organ pipes. Sorrow that circumstances are nudging us to shift even further to remote services. May we all keep each other in our thoughts and prayers. Blessed be.

From Kim Kramer: Joy and gratitude to my coworkers at Carle who have been working overtime. This includes housekeepers, secretaries, repair people, medical assistants, nurses, nurse practioners, physician assistants, physicians, and administrators. As someone who has been working in the Covid 19 shed at the Curtis clinic, I am grateful to patients who have been understanding about our limited ability to test everyone.

From Kyle Kroha: Last week was my first week in a new/different on campus position. Am very grateful that I get to work from home. Be well Stay well.

From Julie Laut: We moved Julian back in to the house on Wednesday. It took some rearranging, but Having both of my children under the same roof brings comfort to my heart in this anxious time.

From Marie McEnroe: Our Uncle Ollie is in the hospital for bacterial meningitis. They have him in a medically induced coma while they try to treat him. Prayers requested. On another note: Joy for all those who showed interest in the online mindfulness practice, and sorrow for the previously unknown participant limit of the platform we used. We will figure out a way for everyone to participate next time!

From Mimi Ormerod: Finding joy in the UUCUC services and new connections with family and old friends via videoconferencing.

From Heidi Richter: Harrison Hall and Heidi Richter are joyous to announce our engagement. We will be married next summer of 2021!

From Umeeta Sadarangani: Gratitude for all my colleagues at Parkland College who have been supportive, compassionate, and creative during this very difficult time.

From Pamela Salela: My joy is being grateful for your live stream. Kathleen Robbins is a good friend of mine and I have been wanting to attend a Sunday service for some time. But being in Springfield makes that difficult. So, I am grateful to be able to join you today via your live stream.

GIVING AND GRATITUDE

The recent rise of a new strain of coronavirus weighs heavy on our hearts and minds. It’s a good moment to take a big breath, turn to one another for support and renew our commitment to the communities we serve. In this time of national crisis, the Unitarian Universalist Association is working alongside our congregations, and supporting our UU religious professionals and administrative staff, who are tirelessly leading our communities through the COVID-19 pandemic. This week we launched our COVID-19 Pandemic Response, providing a way for our UU faith community to financially support those religious professionals and communities for whom the pandemic will create the greatest need.
