Hello,

Since everyone has been ordered to stay inside due to the pandemic many entrepreneurs have tried to switch their business online. Zoom has gone through the roof and even mainstream television is using it to keep their shows operating while the hosts stay at home. I believe this pandemic will change the way much of us work in the future and may even have spawned a couple of new business ideas.

One of those new ideas for some is a podcast. There have been a few podcasts start up from people I know and even though they aren’t formalized as of yet for the public many people are starting a podcast for their business. If this is you then the information below may help you.

Podcasting can be a lot of fun but often are started for the wrong reasons. It takes a lot of work to make a professional styled show and that in itself takes dedication. If you are starting a podcast to get famous, make big money, or quit your job, I want you to think again. In my experience it can take a year before you can build an audience large enough for sponsorships and that adds on even more challenges. Starting a podcast can be exciting but it is also a lot of work. With two shows myself I know how much work it can be and not all shows grow equally.

The short video series below can help you decide what type of podcast you may want to start and the equipment you will need. The most important part is the “Why” of podcasting. Around 50% of podcast don’t make it past twenty episodes. I am currently at 475 episodes and have been doing it since 2015 and almost quit at 100 episodes. Many of my friends that started podcasts have died out at 20 episodes due to workload. In the industry we call that pod fade.

Setting Up Your Podcast
Editing Software
You will need to edit your podcasts before uploading them to a server. There are some hosting packages where you can record your audio files directly into the program. I am not a fan of this as I like more control over the sound and the final mix of the show. I use Adobe Audition for my editing now but a couple good ones to start with are Garage Band and Audacity.

Garage Band is only for Mac users and is included with most Mac operating software. It allows you to do many basic functions required for editing a podcast and is fairly easy to learn. I used it for the first two years when I got started. You can find it in the App Store.

Audacity is a free program that can be used on either a Mac or PC. This is a great program that many people use to this day for their shows and will help you improve your shows. I used it before beginning with the Adobe Suite which is a professional grade program. You can find Audacity through the link below.
