Hello Everyone!
This October was definitely a
treat
as CAN students fell into the rhythm of school, CAN After School Programs,
trick-or-treated
their way through the Hikone Haunted House and Arrowwood Hills Trunk or Treat night, and created away with the CAN Art & Design program.
Staff and students alike enjoyed participating in many of the fun fall activities that come with the cooler weather and spooky season.

What Is Happening at CAN?
|
|
As part of The Kids' Table curriculum, children brewed homemade dye made from turmeric, blueberries, and beets. Students predicted colors and intensity, and experimented with different ingredient ratios for each dye. Bandanas were bunched, scrunched, folded, and twisted in wacky patterns and boiled over stove tops. After rinsing and washing, students got to wear and take home their final products. The little artists loved contributing to every part of this process and exploring new concepts of everyday foods.

Hikone Haunted House Extravaganza
|
|
This year's Haunted House at Hikone was a blast! The CAN community really came together to make it success. Young people who enjoy participating in Halloween-themed festivities had fun on their spooky tour and exited with cider and snacks in-hand.
|
|
A BIG thanks to the team that helped put together this haunted maze -- the Hikone main room was unrecognizable!
Additionally, many of Hikone's spookers were the community's middle schoolers. They showed their professionalism as they played the "monsters" of the Haunted House; they scaled their scares to their older and younger audiences and were respectful of the safety boundaries in place allowing for everyone to have a great haunted experience!

Behind every successful program are the many staff, AmeriCorps VISTAs, interns, and volunteers who make it happen!

Anna Vantsevich, an AmeriCorps VISTA, recently joined the CAN team and hit the ground running on a situational awareness project focused on Social Emotional Learning needs across our organization. Here, Anna and UofM Social Work Student Pa Nhia Yang are using a business tool called an
Affinity Wall (or Affinity Diagram)
to analyze the qualitative data that came out of interviews with directors to create insights into how the SEL program can be best developed and implemented throughout CAN's programs.

Feeding America Fly-In
Did you know? When school is out, 470,759 children in Michigan who rely on school breakfast and lunch programs no longer have access to meal assistance and only 17% of these children access a summer feeding program.
***
This month, CAN Executive Director, Derrick Miller, went to Capitol Hill for the Feeding America Fly-In to advocate for the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act and Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) Appropriations to fight to overcome child hunger in America.
Derrick was invited by Food Gatherers to attend this Feeding America-hosted event. He attended on behalf of Community Action Network in partnership with the Food Bank Council of Michigan, Peace Neighborhood Center, Aid in Milan, Forgotten Harvest, Kellogg Company, and No Kid Hungry.
More information about this trip will be shared during CAN's end of year campaign--stay tuned!
