Walnut Bend Lane, Westheimer Road Projects On Track

While you're out and around in Westchase District you'll notice two major Westchase District projects happening. Westchase District's largest ever capital improvement project on Walnut Bend Lane is progressing while projects on Westheimer Road -- such as new, wider sidewalks --  are also noticeable. Irma Sanchez, vice president of projects for Westchase District, recently conducted walk-thru inspections with teams for both projects.

O n Walnut Bend Lane, the team includes the Texas Department of Transportation, Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) and Harper Brothers Construction (HBC). They  inspected work underway where a rebuild of nearly 6,000 feet of the roadway between Westpark and Westheimer is progressing.

 "T his has been a smooth construction process because HBC has done a great job of keeping us informed of their ongoing tasks, which we in turn have been able to communicate to the community," said Sanchez.

Sanchez then met with TxDOT and contractors working on Westheimer Road, one of Houston's most heavily traveled streets, as part of the District's Westheimer Streetscape. The project includes sidewalk and 'back-of-the-curb' improvements including building one-of-a-kind custom bus shelters with supporting partner Houston METRO.

Sanchez gave a preview of the shelter's design: "It will sport a modern look and complement some of the other amenities that are going in along the corridor: street lighting fixtures and monument markers. Our  goal is to provide attractive and well maintained, yet functional, transit stops to encourage more people to take advantage of the transit system that lays at their front door."

West Houston Leadership Institute Calls for Applicants

WHLI programs promote civic engagement and community leadership providing sessions where class members can interact with elected officials and hear their perspective on leadership.
T he Government & Infrastructure Day session has hosted leaders
 like  Ed Emmett (center, former Harris County Judge) . 

The West Houston Leadership Institute (WHLI) is a breakthrough leadership program whose mission is to build a committed, informed, and engaged core of community leaders to plan and care for West Houston. Leaders from corporate, nonprofit, and community organizations apply to participate in a 10-month program to learn and dialogue about issues that affect West Houston.

 WHLI is accepting leadership program applications before November 5 for the upcoming year. If you are interested in applying, please review the class schedule for the forthcoming year and submit an online application. Qualified applicants will be notified of their acceptance after their application has been reviewed and approved by WHLI's board of directors.

WDCF Has Large Need for School Supplies and
Donation  Sites, Even As Classes Go Virtual

Westchase District Community Fund is spearheading a school supply and donation drive.
 
With the start of the 2021-2022 academic school year less than a month away, the Westchase District Community Fund School Supply Drive still needs your help. So far, eight Westchase District-area businesses are participating in the Westchase District Community Fund's (WDCF) school supply drive, taking place all this month.

Each location is hosting a donation box for school supplies that the WDCF will distribute among Sneed Elementary School, Paul Revere Middle School and West Houston Assistance Ministries. The need for school supplies during COVID is greater than ever, even if some kids will be learning virtually and not in the classroom.

Businesses who have not signed up can still help WDCF. If you would like to host a collection box, call Louis Jullien, 713-780-9434 or send him an email.

Celebrate National Farmers Market Week: Aug. 2-8



Presented by the Farmers Market Coalition, National Farmers Market Week celebrates the tireless efforts of our market operators and vendors who show why the farmers market is essential. The Westchase District Farmers Market exemplifies this role in our community. 
According to the Farmers Market Coalition, this year's week celebrates resiliency. Like farmers markets around the country, the Westchase District Farmers Market adapted to the community's needs during crisis in a rapidly changing world.

Farmtastic Fun Returns August 6
Mark your calendar. Held during National Farmers Market Week, Farmtastic returns for its second event on August 6. From 4 - 6 p.m., bring the kids to enjoy Farmtastic festivities including a caricature artist, mini ponies, pickle making and musician Rickey Pittman, also known as the Bard of the South.

Westchase District Community Fund Debuts New Website, Dombrowski Joins As Board Member


Founded in 2010, the Westchase District Community Fund recently launched a redesigned website. Check out wdcfund.org to learn more about the WDCF and the amazing work by its volunteer board members to provide resources to produce or support local projects, programs or events which have a positive impact on the quality of life in Westchase. The website features information on the WDCF's events, fundraising efforts, recipients of contributions and how the WDCF is helping the District with its vision for more open spaces and green spaces. Individuals or companies interested in supporting the WDCF's mission can also make donations via the website.The WDCF is a tax-exempt organization, overseen by a volunteer board.

Speaking of volunteers, John Dombrowski recently joined the volunteer board. John  and his wife, Julia, have lived in Lakeside Forest, a djacent to Westchase District, for 21 years. John enjoyed a 43- year career as a petroleum geologist exploring for new reserves of oil and gas both domestically and internationally.
He began his career with TEXACO working onshore/offshore California and Alaska for 23 years. John became an independent consultant and spent 13 years working for small international companies on projects in Africa, South America and the Middle East. After creating a small exploration company, he  retired in 2018. John enjoys a regular fitness routine and you'll see him shopping weekly at  the Westchase District Farmer's Market . Welcome John!

St. Cyril of Alexandria Catholic Church Opens Registration for Mother's Day Out and Pre-school


St. Cyril's of Alexandria Catholic Church Mother's Day Out/Preschool is now registering for the fall session, which begins on September 8. The school is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. (extended hours available) and serves children from 16 months through 5 years.

The curriculum is age appropriate based in Catholic principles, and is  a great way to introduce your child to school.
