In Florida, it’s hard to tell what season we are in sometimes. Luckily, we have the start of Snook season on September 1st to give us the head’s up that autumn is just around the corner. Snook are known in this area as a great sportfish that also taste good! You will need a special Snook permit to keep one or hire a chartered fishing boat. Two of our favorite charters that offer Snook fishing is Going Coastal Charters and Still Jillin Charters.

September also holds National Estuaries Week from the 18th through the 25th. Did you know the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) is the most biodiverse estuary in North America? It is also home to more than 4,300 species of plants and animals. It serves as a spawning and nursery ground for snook, dolphin, and many endangered or threatened species including sea turtles and manatees who depend on the seagrass beds and mangrove forests that line the lagoon. The Environmental Learning Center, located along the Wabasso Causeway, is a great place to learn more about the IRL and get up-close and hands-on with the creatures that inhabit it. Or take a ride down historic Jungle Trail to Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge and get a bird’s eye view of the famous island in the IRL that serves as a rookery for over 30 species of migratory birds.

While visiting the Sebastian River area in September, be sure to check out all our festivals and special events. There’s a River Raft Race and even a Chicken Race! Channel your inner Jack Sparrow and head down to the Pirate and Caribbean Festival or enjoy a cheeseburger in paradise at Capt. Hiram’s Resort while listening to the Jimmy Buffet tribute band, Caribbean Chillers. Read on for more details…
