DMH TAY Initiative
Staying Connected
July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month and the month offers organizations of all types and sizes a wonderful opportunity to create mental health awareness in diverse communities. The US House of Representatives proclaimed July as this special month in 2008, aiming to improve access to mental health treatment and services through increased public awareness. Since then, many organizations have hosted a variety of events and activities in communities across the country each year. The National Network to Eliminate Disparities (a SAMHSA-supported initiative) and the  National Alliance on Mental Illness  (NAMI) have partnered to create webinars, share resources, and highlight related opportunities celebrating the month. You can watch the webinar recordings from past years below.

Suicide Prevention - (#330)
Maintaining Hope in Times of Uncertainty

Workshop Description:
The COVID-19 pandemic has created overwhelming anxiety, stress, depression, and feelings of loss of safety for people throughout the world. Hopelessness and isolation have increased.
As a result, experts are anticipating significant increases in deaths of despair in the foreseeable future. Individuals who already felt hopeless and in pain may now experience more difficulty. Suicidologists have long known that hopelessness is a predictor of suicidal ideation and behavior. With the current pandemic, we must consider how to support all individuals.
During this 90 minute webinar, we will explore theories of hope and identify strategies for maintaining authentic hope for individuals who are newly hopeless due to the pandemic and those for whom the pandemic has intensified already existing pain and hopelessness.

This will be an interactive webinar with polls about hope, a self-test on hope, and opportunities for contributing to the conversation about how we can help others maintain authentic hope.
Presented by:
Jim McCauley LICSW, Associate Director, Riverside Trauma Center
Rebecca Mirick, PhD, LICSW, Assistant Professor of Social Work, BSW Program Coordinator, Salem State University

Create Safe and
Nurturing Environments

Integrating trauma-informed care is a journey, not a destination. It involves understanding the people you serve, how staff are affected by their work, and how to create safe and nurturing environments that allow you to provide care in a trauma-informed way. Leveraging this framework is more important now than ever before as we navigate the effects of COVID-19.

Hear the experts at the National Council for Behavioral Health  discuss the value of trauma-informed care  and the impact it has on clinical outcomes and staff engagement.
