Thank you to the almost 465 parents and teachers that have joined ISPTSA. Our goal is 586 members for 100% full school membership, and we are almost 80% there, so become a community supporter.  Please Join Us!

Students can join too—everybody counts toward full school membership. Did you know we have more than 10 students as members? Students can attend the PTSA legislative assembly, be on the ISPTSA grants committee, and vote on our budget at general membership meetings.

We have nearly 100% teacher/staff participation—thank your students' teachers for supporting ISPTSA!

ADVOCACY NEWS

Thank you to International School juniors  Jasna Chong  and  Kavya Selvakumar  who attended our Washington State PTSA Legislative Assembly as delegates from our PTSA! The students voted for issues and resolutions that will guide advocacy during the upcoming legislative session in Olympia. 

At one session during the weekend, legislators led students in an interactive round table about how to speak up, whether in class, at school board meetings, or in Olympia. 

These two young women represented our school and our PTSA with intelligence, poise, and enthusiasm! 

Keep your eyes on this column next week for more information on specific topics.

PTSA COMPUTER CLUB

Computer Club is an IS club that is sponsored by PTSA, not ASB. The club meets weekly throughout most of the year to create games from scratch. We submit these games in a PTA Washington game development competition for high school students. We consist of coders, artists, musicians, leaders, and just general game enthusiasts. It’s a really fun club where students get to explore fields they may not get to explore elsewhere and get hands-on experience properly executing long-term projects. It’s also just a really fun club to be in!

We plan to meeting on alternating Wednesdays & Fridays from 6:00–8:00 PM. When school sports end in late November, we would like to switch to Wednesdays from 2:00–4:00 PM though for the rest of the year.

 

We need an advisor or this club cannot exist.

A NOTE ON AM/PM DROP-OFF/PICK-UP AND PARKING

Dear IS Families,

 

Thank you for ensuring the safety of all our students and staff during our busy morning drop-off time. Please help us maintain a safe arrival period for all by helping us with the following:

 

Families have found that leaving just 10 minutes earlier in the morning can have a significant impact on how long they wait in line to drop-off. Students can also help with traffic flow by ensuring they have all the items they are bringing to school ready to go upon approach to the drop-off zone by the double-doors at the mid-way point of the building. 

 

The School Safety Team has ordered and will be placing additional sandwich board to help us all follow these guidelines for drop-off and pick-up. The district Facilities Department will be supporting us with additional painting to help direct drivers. Watch for these updates to our system over the course of this month.

The library’s Makerspace is requesting donations of supplies to support projects. Donations can be placed in the large yellow box marked “Makerspace Donations” located by the top of the gym stairs in the Commons.

It’s that time of year again! The leaves are falling, and the holidays are around the corner. It’s time for our ANNUAL SENIOR CLASS POINSETTIA & WREATH FUNDRAISER!

Poinsettias from Squak Mountain Nursery in Issaquah come in red, white, or shades of pink for $20 each.  POINSETTIA ORDER FORM

Wreaths, also from Squak Mountain, are 24 inches in diameter with ornamental pine cones and sell for $25 each. Add an optional holiday bow for $2.  WREATH ORDER FORM

These beautiful plants are the perfect holiday gift for friends, neighbors, and co-workers! They also serve as festive holiday decor for your office or home in bunches, or as a table centerpiece to last throughout the holiday season!

You can also order a poinsettia for a teacher or staff member as a holiday gift! What better way to show your appreciation for all that they do for our IS students? You may buy one for a designated teacher/staff member, or order for the staff pool and we’ll make sure that all the teachers receive one of these beautiful plants. We need your participation! 

All proceeds go to the IS Senior Class to help with costs of Graduation Festivities!

Deborah Kraft, the Director of K-12 Counseling for the Bellevue School District, will be leading a discussion on the Bellevue School District’s new Signs of Suicide (SOS) program. The presenters will explain the use of universal screeners and how they are used in BSD schools in Grade 10. This suicide prevention program is being implemented in all of Bellevue’s public secondary schools. Deborah will be joined by a panel that includes program staff and Middle and High School counselors. They will be discussing how the program works, how staff are trained to implement it, and how it fits into the existing mental health unit.

The discussion will be followed by a question and answer period.

WESTERN AEROSPACE SCHOLARS

Over 200 high school juniors from over 70 different public, private, and home-school organizations across Washington, Oregon, and Montana, are taking part in the fourteenth year of the Western Aerospace Scholars (WAS) program. The students in your district, along with the many others, have a challenging but fun road ahead of them. Over the next couple of months, they will complete online academic coursework and talk to STEM industry experts. While each student completes their course work independently, they will be immersed in a community of fellow space “nerds” both near and far from them.

 

Our program is a free, online, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education program for high school juniors affiliated with NASA Johnson Space Center’s National High School Aerospace Scholars program and has partner programs in Texas, Virginia, and Idaho. Our primary goal is to excite and prepare students to pursue career pathways in STEM fields using a distance learning curriculum developed in partnership with NASA and the University of Washington.

 

The application deadline for Western Aerospace Scholars is Wednesday, October 30, 2019. Do you have a student who may be interested?

The sophomore-level course serves as an introduction to the junior-level course. It is a FREE online course that takes place in the spring of sophomore year and contains some of the same lessons of the junior program.

BELLEVUE HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL INFORMATION MEETING

 

Wednesday, November 13, 7:00 PM

Bellevue High School Library 

 

This meeting is run by the Bellevue Baseball Booster Club and is intended to provide an introduction to the upcoming baseball season to students and parents. Come meet coach Tate and other players and parents. We will share information about pre-season training, a rough calendar of events, and answer questions. Please share with any other families you think would be interested.
