PLUMA SNIPPETS SEPTEMBER 2021

COMING HOME

How often have we heard the statement from someone who has been traveling, ‘It was good to come home.’
I have certainly felt the welcome of my own home even after a day’s work at the salon. And as the holidays get closer, yes! the holidays begin in a month, the thought of coming home ushers in yet another interpretation of coming home.
A few years ago, I was introduced to Joanna and Chip Gains, The Fixer Upper Show. While traveling to San Diego to visit my new grandson Finn, I would stay at a hotel and while relaxing in the evenings in my room, I would binge on their home renovation and design program.
I was entertained and enjoyed watching their personal, as well as their working relationship as they demolished and rebuilt homes and brought joy to anticipating families. A sort of love story with a happy coming home ending…. every time.

Then I discovered Joanna and Chip’s Magnolia Journal Magazine, inspiration for life and home. It has become my favorite reading spa-day material at my home. From the front cover to the last page, I am relaxed and appreciate the insightful articles and presentations of what makes a home inviting, including home accessories and recipes for delicious food. All wrapped in a beautiful array of color, design and pleasing words of comfort…every page.
On the last leaf of the magazine is stated their Magnolia Manifesto. When I read it, I am transformed into the warm and welcoming woman I would like to be All of the time. Especially in the salon where many of you have come to feel at home.

Something inside of me warms up and opens when I read their manifesto. I feel at home. Here it is for your pleasure.
-We believe in home, that it should restore us from today and ready us for tomorrow. We believe in friendship, because friends who feel like family are the best kind of friends, and that nothing matters more than family.
-We believe in seeking the balance between hustle and rest and learning to find contentment in both.
-We believe everyone deserves a seat at the table and everyone has a story worth telling. We believe in human kindness, knowing we are made better when we all work together. We believe in courage, in cartwheeling past our comfort zones and trying something a little bit scary every day.
-We believe that failure needn’t be a negative thing; rather we learn from our mistakes and fail smarter next time.
-We believe in doing good work that matters and, in choosing that, nudging others toward doing the same. We believe that newer isn’t always better, and that it’s time for the pendulum of trend to swing back to basics.
-We believe in unearthing beauty, however hidden or subtle it might be. We believe that each day is a gift and that everyday miracles are scattered about if only we have eyes to see.
-And of all heroic pursuits large or small, we believe there may be none greater than a life well lorved.

With love,

Hilda

Personal Development:
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up
Marie Kondo

Novel: Ordinary Grace
William Kent Kruger

Marie Kondo’s Life-Changing magic of Tidying Up taught me a lot about my own habits, by Taylor Mead: Tidying up is:
 1. More than just organizing. It’s Life-changing. The question of what you want to own is actually the question of how you want to live your life.
2. Tidying is a marathon, not asprint. When you rush the process to ‘get it done’ you’ll be back at the starting line again. To pass the finishing line, you have to actually run the tidying race…. even if it takes a little longer. Take your time.
3. Putting Things in Storage is Successfully Tiding. No! ‘Storage experts are hoarders,’ Marie declares. ‘Putting things away creates the illusion that the clutter problem has been solved.’ But in reality, there’s only so much storage space, so it will eventually become clutter again.
4.  Always Tidy by Category, not Location. For example, if you tidy your bedroom first, then go to the bathroom, you might end up creating 2 separate spots of the same type of items. By organizing category by category, you’ll keep all items of the same type neatly in the same place.
5. Choose What You Want to Keep, not What You Want to Toss. Focus on the things you want to keep. Hold each item and ask yourself whether or not it Sparks Joy. If it does, keep it. If not, dispose of it. It’s that simple.
6. You’re Probably Folding Wrong. Fold each item so that you can see where every item is at a glance. When each clothing item is stacked on top of another, it becomes impossible to see what’s in your drawer. Instead, it’s important to make sure your items are standing up.

Recipe of the Month

Egg White Muffins with Kabocha and Brussels Sprouts
Had enough protein shakes for one day? How about filling up on these delicious Egg White Muffins? The inspiration for these muffins came from a fancy egg white frittata enjoyed at a swanky restaurant. This recipe gives you all the same gourmet flavor with the convenience of a handheld muffin. Enjoy for breakfast, lunch or snack time!

What makes these muffins so fancy? It has Kabocha squash and Brussels Sprouts giving stand-out flavor and texture to the egg whites. Be sure to dice your Kabocha very tiny and to shred the Brussels Sprouts quite thin. Also, if you can’t find Kabocha squash then Butternut Squash works too.

Servings: 12 -- Courtesy of RealHealthyRecipes.com

Here’s what you need…
  • Non-stick, olive oil cooking spray
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 cup Kabocha squash, peeled, seeded and finely diced
  • 1 cup Brussels Sprouts, finely shredded
  • dash of sea salt and black pepper
  • 20 egg whites

  2. In a skillet place the olive oil over medium high heat. Add the squash and Brussels Sprouts and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and cool.
  3. In a large bowl whisk the egg whites with a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Stir in the tender veggies. Divide the egg mixture into the 12 prepared muffin tins.
