The Essential Nature of Quality HVAC Craftsmanship in Healthcare

Inova Loudoun Hospital's new North Tower located in Leesburg, VA serves as a scalable, critical resource to meet the community's needs. The tower itself spans 382,000 square feet and will expand north capacity to 228 beds from the previous building's 82 beds.

Shapiro & Duncan brought its out-of-the-box creativity to manage a number of elements that strayed from the "norm", such as the aesthetic design elements including the need to fashion baseboard heaters that are made in straight pieces into circular shapes to match the building structure.  Read more.
Our People Do the Right Thing

Shapiro & Duncan received an Associated Builders and Contractors  STEP Platinum for our commitment to safety. 4.4% of member companies achieved Platinum in 2020 and 2.6% achieved the top Diamond level. View the full 2020 safety report here.

As expected, we are working tirelessly to keep our team safe as they continue to perform our essential services. We distributed over 300 8 oz. bottles of sanitizers and individual packages that included bandanas and masks. In addition we supplied our teams with 30 digital thermometers, 2,000 cloth face coverings and 6,000 KN 95 masks. Our jobsites are equipped with 55 gallon drums of hand sanitizer for refills and gallon pump stations.

Our People Drive Innovation

With the help of IRisvr, Shapiro and Duncan  can understand installation and sequencing requirements for complex spaces with the use of virtual reality. We are  currently pushing our 3D models into the cloud for easy virtual reality viewing.

Our Virtual Design Coordinators and Project Managers can gain a better grasp of coordination issues and quickly identify any site constraint challenges on a project. Our field leaders are able to view installations and provide instant feedback without working through a complex building information model.

We are using VR on two projects, Georgetown University Medstar Hospital and Signal House. For the hospital, we are able to virtually mock up OR and patient rooms to visualize equipment and valve access. We will be able to fully understand how our traditional built systems will interact with prefabricated bathroom pods being furnished by the owner. For office building, we are working with a highly complex HVAC system in a small footprint. Using VR has helped our teams visualize the installation to better grasp how life safety requirements will be accounted for and for sequencing.

In the near future, we plan to host multi user VR meetings to work through any design and coordination issues. Owners will be able to access their building in a virtual  world during the planning phase. Revisions identified earlier in the process will be much more cost effective and avoid rework in finished spaces.
Our People Serve the Community
  • Featured on the NEW Build Your Path Podcast. Shapiro & Duncan partnered with MCCEI (Maryland Center for Construction Education and Innovation) to help develop and launch their podcast series targeted to help students, parents and teachers gain a better understanding of career paths in the construction industry.
  • Participated in Steven Shapiro's (no relation) American University Washington College of Law class for the 10th year. On February 14th we hosted the class at our Fabrication Shop in Landover, MD. We gave a presentation on our virtual design and fabrication process and toured the facility. Instructor, Maurice Atieh worked with a group testing their welding skills, while Instructor Whit Crawford gave another group a backhoe operating experience. Later we met in the classroom to discuss Owner/Contractor/Subcontractor/Vendor relations, hierarchy and specific contract clauses. We then toured the mechanical penthouse and rooftop to discuss the different components of the high efficiency HVAC system. We planned an additional jobsite tour, however due to COVID 19, we canceled and joined the group in a Zoom class discussion on risk management.
  • Joined NAWIC Builds and American Subcontractors Association of Metro Washington (ASAMW) for a young professionals panel discussion. Project Executive, Ameen Khouri led a discussion on how the industry could use the McKinsey Report to help with the way we build. The report includes delivery of projects, reliance on building information modeling and ideas for labor force.
  • Partnered with Maryland Center for Construction Education & Innovation (MCCEI) and Build Your Future for the Building Connections panel around teaching, training and employment efforts in the construction industry.
