Greetings!
A group has formed within and beyond our two congregations we named “Lake Superior Bridge Builders.” Our mission statement is that of our churches, “Serving God by Serving Others and ALL of creation.” We are specific to serving asylum seekers. We started to meet in August while attending webinars that have been mentioned in your newsletters with the Southwestern Texas Synod ELCA, West Texas Episcopal Diocese, Episcopal Migration Ministries (EMM), Lutheran Immigration and Refuge Services (LIRS), AMMPARO, Texas Border Coalition, and others. After our local meeting on Tuesday, October 13 we decided we were ready to sponsor an individual/family from the border. They will only release an individual/family from the detention center if the individual or family has a sponsor.
I contacted Allyson Pryor associate to the Bishop of the Southwestern Texas Synod ELCA and within a day had a connection with a Russian family that was then released from the Karnes Detention Center in Texas Friday, October 16. The family is: Pavel (father), Alla (mother), Oliver (15 year-old son), and Victoria (2 year-old daughter). They have traveled from Russia for two years to seek asylum at our border, and of that two years, they were 8 months in Mexico. Their story is just that, “their story.” It will be their choice with whom and when they share their story.
The process moved with lightening speed it seemed and the family arrived in Bayfield Saturday, October 24. We have miraculously acquired an immigration attorney in Minneapolis that speaks Russian and has represented many Russian immigrants.
We have opened a separate account at Bethesda where we can receive funds to support the family at this time. Pavel has expressed several times that he does not want the family to be a burden. At this time they have enough clothing. The promises of furniture have been overwhelming and plenty. What we are asking for people who want to donate food is instead to donate a gift card for groceries as Alla loves to cook, and wants and needs to cook to keep her family healthy with fresh produce and the like.
Word of the family coming to Bayfield spread quickly and have received numerous affirmations. As of now receiving funds are used for their expenses of plane fare (from San Antonia to Bayfield), transportation (January 6 Court in Chicago), housing, food, and attorney fees.

New Book Study
BRAVING THE WILDERNESS
Starting December 3rd
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
• A timely and important book that challenges everything we think we know about cultivating true belonging in our communities, organizations, and culture, from the #1 bestselling author of Rising Strong, Daring Greatly, and The Gifts of Imperfection
Don’t miss the hourlong Netflix special
Brené Brown: The Call to Courage!
|
|
|
“True belonging doesn’t require us to change who we are. It requires us to be who we are.” Social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW, has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives—experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame, and empathy. In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization. With her trademark mix of research, storytelling, and honesty, Brown will again change the cultural conversation while mapping a clear path to true belonging.

Native American Worship Service
|
On October 11 we had our 2nd monthly Native American Worship "Spirituality" with Carolyn Gouge. She was a great storyteller and did a very nice job explaining Anishinaabe traditions.
This month we will welcome Jim Pete on November 22 who will be teaching about "Thanksgiving: Every day in the Life of the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe, Chippewa)"

Mother Tanya Scheff of Christ Church, the Episcopal Church of Chequamegon Bay will be preaching.
This is not an in person, public service of worship. It will only be accessible online. The only people who will be in the sanctuary will be Tom Denker, Steve Sandstrom (AV), and area clergy.

Sharon Bestul cleaned and weeded the bookshelves in the fellowship hall at Immanuel. If you would like any of the books Sharon weeded out please feel free to go through the books on the table within the next two weeks. After that they will magically disappear.
