This year, Chaplain (Colonel) Steve Cantrell of the Army Futures Command, Futures and Concepts Center, was awarded the Order of Martin of Tours by Chaplain (Brigadier General) Bill Green on behalf of the Chief of Chaplains. This award is a prestigious recognition of character and service, and exemplifies his dedication to spiritual care, selflessness, and humility. Chaplain Cantrell has been a chaplain for 22 years, and has served for 36 years in the Army, 27 of which were active duty. He knew he was being called to ministry from an early age. His father encouraged him to pray about becoming a military chaplain. An Army Veteran, his father had become a Christian after returning home from a three-year tour, in large part due to the influence of his own unit chaplain in Germany. Chaplain Cantrell enlisted, and after meeting Dr. Robert Crick at a Church of God service, began the coursework required to become a Chaplain, so that he might impact others in their spiritual path as his father was.

Chaplain Cantrell began his service at Fort Bragg in the 82nd Airborne Division, and has served on deployments in Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He is now stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, where he received the Saint Martin of Tours for his many years of outstanding service. The award ceremony was broadcast live, so family and friends were able to watch the ceremony through live video. The Department of the Army says that this award recognizes those who "Live the Call" while emphasizing innovation, teamwork, and leadership. Chaplain Cantrell is honored to be chosen for this award, and is grateful to be able to serve Soldiers and their Families every day. We're honored that he is a part of our Church of God Chaplain team!
