MONTHLY UPDATE
JANUARY 2021
NEW YEAR'S EDITION
From Catherine Hancock,
Early Intervention Program Manager

Happy New Year! I am approaching 2021 with hope and optimism. In part, the optimism comes from all that happened and was learned in 2020.  We struggled and came together to adapt to rapidly changing situations due to COVID-19 and the resulting social, health, and economic impact. I was reminded of what I already knew:
ITC of Norfolk Begins 2021 with
Renewed Enthusiasm
By JoShirlon Capehart, Guest Contributor
2020 has not gone the way that we planned but it’s the way that it is. Here in Norfolk we are taking the opportunity to grow from it. We are going to take all that we have learned into 2021 to continue to serve our families with excellence, to grow professionally and to continue making the world a better place.

What are You Grateful For?
A Moving Story About Gratitude

Tele-Intervention Has Made Me Thankful For…

Kim Griffith says:
I am so grateful for the professional guidance I have received throughout the process of learning and implementing tele-intervention...

Kim, the providers and SCs at ITC Fairfax have been amazing in their flexibility and ability to learn and excel. I am so thankful!

How to Change the World?
Kid President explores people's different ideas about how to make the world better.
Richard Discusses How YOU Can Change the World in Just 45 Days

One’s the loneliest. Two’s company. Three’s a crowd.
And seven’s critical.

Richard says:
It never fails: I’m on line at the grocery store or socializing with friends and acquaintances at a cocktail party when someone invariably asks me: “Richard, which one of the Part C compliance indicators is most important?” And invariably I reply: “Indicator 07…45-day timeline.”

A GIFT FOR YOU
by Dana Childress, PhD

You’ve worked really hard this year. You’ve stretched to fit into a mold of providing early intervention (EI) that was unlike any you’d ever experienced before. You struggled, you persisted, and you succeeded. You did it because you love what you do. You also did it because you love the families.

This new video, Parents and Early Intervention, from the Early Intervention Training Program at the University of Illinois is like a gift to all EI practitioners for the hard work you’ve done this year. It reminds us about the power of high quality intervention and how important our partnership with families can be. I know you know this, but it sure is nice to hear it from a family. Now, take 7:59 minutes to meet the Warren family and hear their story. I guarantee it’ll make your day.
See, doesn’t that do your heart good?

So yes, this may have been one of the most challenging years we’ve faced as a field, but when other businesses and services closed, EI did not. You continued to support families, reaching them virtually, checking on them by phone, and working together in ways that were new, different, creative, and inspiring. Now, as you reflect on this past year, ask yourself:

When you think of families you have supported, what do you hope they say about their EI experience?

*Thank you to EITP and the Warren Family for sharing their story!*
PET OF THE MONTH
Your home office likely includes a four-legged co-worker.
Let's see them hard at work!
Meet Kronk!

Kronk is the "personal assistant" to Kendel Taft, a Speech Language Therapist for Fairfax County ITC! Kendel shared a photo of Kronk, enjoying their holiday "office" scenery!

Kendel and her fiance adopted baby Kronk after Thanksgiving- he is about 12 weeks old now and what are the odds that his birthday is the day they were supposed to get married (unfortunately they had to postpone to September 2021)?!

Kronki is a lab dachshund mix- but truly looks like a miniature black lab. He is also the best SLP "assistant" and has even motivated a few of Kendel's kiddos to say words like "doggy" or "woof woof!" When he hears their little voices he tilts his head at the computer- which is too cute!
Thank you Kendel and Kronk for your dedication to the infants, toddlers and families in Fairfax County!

Congratulations to you. your fiance and Kronk on your engagement! We look forward to seeing photos of your wedding in September!
QUESTION FROM THE FIELD
BEING DIFFERENT IS OKAY
Is it ok for the IFSP team to add a service to the IFSP without the new service doing an assessment first?

Answer:
As far as adding an assessment then doing an IFSP review to add a new service, the practice manual states this on page 2 of Chapter 6...

Do you have a question? Many others are most likely wondering the same thing. Share you questions here.
