Parents As Teachers
Enrolling Now!

Do you have children that haven't started kindergarten and live in the Hallsville School District?

If so, make sure you check out our Parents as Teachers (PAT) program! PAT supports all parents in their role of being their child's first, and most important, teacher. The first five years of a child's life are the most critical in their cognitive, language, social and emotional development. Parents As Teachers will provide you with practical and effective ways to help in their growth and development by sharing information and giving you hands-on activities to make sure your child reaches all of their developmental milestones.

For more information, please contact our PAT coordinator, Karen Smith, at [email protected] or call 696-5512 ext 6310.
Congratulations All-District Choir
13 Students Make All-District Choir

On Saturday, September 18, several high school choir students chose to audition for All-District Choir at Hannibal High School. In addition to preparing a vocal solo for one judge, each student had to sight-read music to sing for another judge. Each one of the students worked extremely hard to prepare for Saturday, and we are proud of them for their hard work and dedication. Congratulations to these All-District Choir Members!
Community Forum #1
Focusing on the Future

Hallsville’s Board of Education hosted the first of three community forums on Tuesday, September 28. Board President Jon Bequette opened the forum speaking about the growth that Hallsville has experienced as well as his own experiences attending primary school in the current middle school building. Superintendent Downs gave a brief presentation on the district facilities, enrollment, bonding capacity, and funds available. In addition, he highlighted prioritized facility needs and the need for a phased implementation of our capital improvements.  You can view the presentation on the district website here.

The forum concluded with table rotations on options for Hallsville Middle School, athletic facilities, additional campus needs, and information on bonding and capital improvements. Mr. Downs said that as the board considers a no tax-rate increase bond in April 2022, it is important to consider improvement to the quality of educational and extracurricular experiences for our students, address our facility needs in a logical sequence, and ensure continued stewardship and financial stability of the district. Feedback gathered from the forum will be collected and used to identify potential adjustments and coordinate with an architectural firm. Two additional community forums are scheduled for Monday, November 1, and Wednesday, December 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the secondary cafeteria.
FACE School-Based Services
Supporting Our Students

Hallsville Schools is focused on having many support systems in place that focus on the social, emotional, and mental health of our students. In addition to building level counselors and support teams, the district is also fortunate to be in partnership with Family Access Center of Excellence (FACE) of Boone County School-Based Services which merged with Boone County Schools Mental Health Coalition in January 2021. The Coalition promotes students’ social and emotional health and seeks to develop positive peer and adult relationships, effective problem-solving and social skills, as well as successful coping strategies for students.

Dennisa Niles, Regional Coordinator for the Boone County Schools Mental Health Coalition, works in collaboration with district leadership to administer the brief screenings of social, emotional, and behavioral risk to students in grades three through twelfth twice a year. The survey asks students about their experiences with peers, their emotions, and social behavior, and information gathered is used to guide prevention efforts in our schools and to help identify risk factors that could lead to mental health concerns. Teachers also complete a similar survey about students. Mrs. Niles also coordinates professional development for our teachers and staff on mental health issues facing our students.
The district is also fortunate to have a dedicated Family Intervention Specialist Kim Selders who provides on-site support to all four of our schools. Mrs. Selders works directly with teachers, students, and families providing support to assist with immediate crises and working with families to obtain support services that meet the short-term and long-term needs of the students and families. Both Mrs. Selders and Mrs. Niles help provide additional layers of support for our students in collaboration with our teachers, staff, and counselors, and we are thankful they are a part of our school community.

For families that would like additional information on the layers of support the district and FACE provide for our students, please reach out directly to our building-level counselors. You can also visit our website for additional information on Mental Health and Counseling Resources here.

Please join us in congratulating HHS senior Tyler King for being accepted into the Moberly Area Technical Center (MATC) Chapter of the National Technical Honor Society! Tyler is in his second year of the Collision Repair Program at MATC.

The National Technical Honor Society is a national organization that honors the achievements of top Career & Technical Education students, provides scholarships to encourage the pursuit of higher education, and cultivates excellence in today's highly competitive skilled workforce, empowering students to know the value and impact of their career paths and trades.

Students inducted into NTHS must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above and 95% attendance or above in their Hart Career Center courses, in addition to maintaining a 3.0 GPA at their home high school. Board of Education
September Highlights &
October Meeting

Below are highlights of items discussed during the open session of the Wednesday, September 15 Board of Education Meeting. The full agenda with document links is available on the district website

RECOGNITIONS
The Hallsville Transportation Department, including all bus drivers and Brandi Dotson, were recognized for their dedication to our schools and students. This year, the department has faced bus driver shortages, and our drivers have worked tirelessly to continue to provide safe transportation to and from campus as well as the multiple activity trips during the evening time.

Bella Abell, HHS freshman and GATE student, was recognized by Mr. Downs and Mrs. Gunter for her outstanding artistic ability. Bella drew a black and white portrait of Mrs. Bennett, the district's former GATE teacher who passed away in 2018. The program has been looking for ways to honor Mrs. Bennett's memory and legacy, and Bella's portrait captured the essence of Mrs. Bennett. This portrait will be displayed outside the GATE classroom.

The district’s August headcount, ADA, and the number of students who attended at least one day in August was presented to the board for review. All three metrics demonstrate an increase, which indicates higher student enrollment for the current school year.

BREAKFAST & LUNCH PRICES
The Board approved the 2021-2022 new meal prices. Although the district will continue to participate in the Seamless Summer Option during the 2021-22 school year, which provides free meals for all students, second meals for students will be charged $1.35 for breakfast and $2.30 for lunch. Adult meals are $2.00 for breakfast and $3.30 for lunch.

The district assessment plan serves as a general guide to the implementation of student testing within the district. The assessment plan is reviewed annually and approved each year by the Board of Education.

SAFE RETURN TO IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION AND CONTINUITY OF SERVICES PLAN
The Board voted to make amendments to the district’s current Safe Return to In-Person Instruction and Continuity of Services Plan. These amendments include:
  • Face coverings will no longer be required for students and staff in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade; face coverings are still strongly encouraged for all students and staff.
  • The district will institute thresholds of positivity and quarantine rates for each building that, if exceeded, could result in the required use of face coverings by students and staff.
All other protocols and precautions will remain in place. The Safe Return to In-Person Instruction and Continuity of Services Plan will also continue to be reviewed each month at the Board of Education meeting.

FACILITIES MASTER PLAN:
The revised draft of the facilities master plan was presented for Board review. The plan should be used by the Board of Education in setting facilities priorities and making decisions on future bond issues and projects. In preparation for an April 2022 bond issue, Mr. Downs recommended the district hold community input forums on September 28, November 1, and December 1. Klingner and Associates will complete draft conceptual drawings that will reflect the community priorities shared during these meetings. Mr. Downs recommended the Board plan to develop ballot language during the regular December meeting, well in advance of the January deadline.

FACILITIES WORK GROUP PRESENTATION:
A facilities workgroup representing school community stakeholders convened last spring to update the district's facilities master plan. The goals of this group were to review and discuss the status of district facilities and community input, identify additional facility needs, and provide assistance in revising the 2014 Facilities Master Plan. The workgroup presented its findings to the Board of Education. You can view their presentation slides here.

SCHOOL SAFETY
The district safety meeting is scheduled for September 29, 2021, at 3:30 p.m. In addition, SRO Cody Schmitz has been researching bullet-resistant films and getting prices for entrance doors.

Board of Education meeting agendas are available on the school district website by date. The next regular session meeting is Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. in the Hallsville Primary School cafeteria.
