Hi everyone!

We are approaching the end of a May, unlike any other that I've experienced in my time at BWH. Our department routinely hosts between thirty to fifty imaging students across all of our modalities, and usually, we would be celebrating the graduation of the class 2020 around this time. We would be holding our annual graduation events and preparing to welcome our incoming summer students.

I thought I would start with an update regarding how our imaging students, who have been off campus since March, are faring. Our affiliate programs are laboring diligently on innovative solutions to navigate the graduating students through their final requirements, such that as many as possible can finish as scheduled. They've been working closely with the ARRT and other regulatory bodies to find novel paths for accomplishing their remaining requirements. With virtual learning poised to play a more significant role in these programs moving forward, the imaging educators from colleges across Massachusetts have been sharing their experiences with one another regularly over the course of this rather unique semester.
As we begin to initiate the reopening of our imaging areas, myself and the other Radiology educators' primary focus will be on bringing students back to the clinical setting in a structured and practical manner, with attention to new considerations such as social distancing. Where students may need to return to the hospital to finish their graduation requirements, we will be working closely with our affiliate programs to arrive at solutions which foster learning, while remaining respectful of necessary changes to workflow. I am thankful to our imaging education team, which includes Bryan Czajkowski, Patrick Curley, Chelsey Da Silva, Jolene Fantony, Vera Kimbrell, Mayara Marzugi, Angela Schiavone, Kyle Seaver, Michele Umbro, Kim Vanyo, and David Yang, for assuring open communication with our students and affiliate programs throughout the COVID response. Their insightful and honest discourse contributed to decisive actions, which kept our students safe.

Just as our affiliate programs have been working to change, all our staff within Radiology have been in a constant state of adaptation. This crisis has presented innumerable challenges and adjustments to overcome, from alterations in our practice to labor pool redeployments. However, it has also afforded us a great opportunity to rebuild a stronger department together. Within our education sphere, our imaging and physician teaching groups will now have the chance to collaborate on enhancing or integrating current educational practices, while exploring future applications for virtual technology.

It's been motivating to see so many staff members in this department come together to move us forward. Stay safe, and stay healthy!

Fueling with Fast Food
"With time at a premium, you may find yourself relying more than usual on fast food.  If dinner is coming from the drive-thru more often these days, keep the below in mind to ensure a balanced and filling meal. As always, thank you for all that you do."

Easy Bagel Recipe
Instead of stopping for breakfast, make these easy, 5 ingredient bagels on a day off and enjoy all week long!
Ingredients:
1 cup (5 oz) unbleached all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder, make sure it's not expired, or it won't rise
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, use less if using table salt
1 cup non-fat Greek yogurt, not regular yogurt, it will be too sticky
1 egg white, beaten (whole egg works fine too)
optional toppings: everything bagel seasoning, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried garlic flakes, dried onion flakes*

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 375F. Place parchment paper or a silpat on a baking sheet. If using parchment paper, spray with oil to avoid sticking. In a medium bowl combine the flour, baking powder and salt and whisk well. Add the yogurt and mix with a fork or spatula until well combined, it will look like small crumbles. Lightly dust flour on a work surface and remove dough from the bowl, knead the dough a few times until dough is tacky, but not sticky, about 15 turns (it should not leave dough on your hand when you pull away). Divide into 4 equal balls. Roll each ball into 3/4-inch thick ropes and join the ends to form bagels. (or you can make a ball and poke a hole in the center then stretch it slightly) Top with egg wash and sprinkle both sides with seasoning of your choice. Bake on the top rack of the oven for 25 minutes. Let cool at least 15 minutes before cutting.

CT Team Creativity
Two years ago Andrea Robitaille's daughter received a sewing machine for Christmas that remained unopened until a month ago. Andrea had never sewn before, but she has made around 20 surgical caps for her coworkers during the COVID pandemic. The CT team enjoys helping Andrea pick out fabrics for her next batch of caps. Thank you Andrea, we appreciate you!

Janet Mitchell, RN
Janet cares deeply for her patients and co-workers. For years, she has decked out the IR department with her colorful surgical caps. During the COVID crisis, she spent her own time and money to make masks for everyone.
Angela Schiavone, RT
Angela always brings a positive light to the department. During the entire COVID crisis she has reached out to many local restaurants and organizations to provide lunch and other thoughtful treats to boost morale for everyone!
ACR Accreditation
"Congratulations Bryan Czajkowski and CT team for receiving ACR accreditation for all 9 scanners during the months when COVID was at its peak. Thank you all (techs and physicist) for helping Bryan with this enormous task."

Who is Behind the Mask?
Who is Behind the Mask will feature a Radiology employee each week. Look out for our next edition to see who was behind the mask!
How long have you worked for Brigham Health?
20 years
What location do you work at?
Main Campus
What do you love most about working for the Department of Radiology?
My favorite part about radiology is first providing the best care to our patients and the “art form” of obtaining the best images to make a diagnosis.
What is on your bucket list?
I would love to visit England and tour the castles. I would also to take my spouse to Hawaii because he constantly reminds me that he has not been and I have.
Ethel Marolda was Behind the Mask!
