  Battle of the Books 2019
The Somers Library would like to congratulate our 2019 WLS Battle of the Books teams! Our Teen Team came in 2ND place overall!! And our Kids Team made it all the way to the semi-finals!

In case you do not know, the WLS Battle of the Books (BoB) is a book-based trivia tournament for children and teens entering Grades 4 - 10. Teams are sponsored by public libraries in Westchester County. This year, the Somers Library sent two amazing teams to the competition and we are so pleased with their performance!

Beginning in the early summer, both teams read five pre-determined books, put in countless hours studying trivia questions about these books, practicing using buzzers and answering questions as a team. We applaud their hard work and dedication and we commend their teamwork and sportsmanship. We are so proud of the Somers Library teams!

Special thanks to Elizabeth Portillo (Gr 4-6 Team Coach) and Terre Thomas and Jordan Cowie (Gr 7-10 Team Coaches). Thanks as well to Tom Newman of T3 Logowear of Somers for donating the team tee shirts!

Congratulations to the team members:

Author Presentation & Discussion: Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane -
Tuesday, December 3, 6:30 - 8:00 pm. Join us at the Somers Library as author Mary Beth Keane presents how she came to write this book.  Discussion to follow. Ask Again, Yes is a profoundly moving novel about two neighboring families in a suburban town, the friendship between their children, a tragedy that reverberates over four decades, and the power of forgiveness. Francis Gleeson and Brian Stanhope are two NYPD rookies assigned to the same Bronx precinct in 1973. They aren't close friends on the job, but end up living next door to each other outside the city. What goes on behind closed doors in both houses-the loneliness of Francis's wife, Lena, and the instability of Brian's wife, Anne, sets the stage for the stunning events to come. Ask Again, Yes is a beautifully moving exploration of the friendship and love that blossoms between Francis's youngest daughter, Kate, and Brian's son, Peter.  This story reveals how childhood memories look different when reexamined from the distance of adulthood. Kate and Peter's love story is marked by tenderness, generosity, and grace. Seating is limited. Please register. Light refreshments will be served.

Dual Art Exhibit at the Somers Library: Paintings by Marion Comins & Photographs by DuAnne Simon
November 1 - 30, during library hours
This double exhibit features the botanical and bird drawings by artist Marion Comins and photographer DuAnne Simon. Both artists were inspired by the flora and fauna around them.

Marion Comins obtained a certificate in Botanical Illustration at the New York Botanical Gardens in 2015. She works in colored pencil and graphite and has spent the last year or so focusing on birds, especially local songbirds and raptors. Living in Putnam County has afforded her plenty of time to be out in nature and experience the wonder of watching so many beautiful birds in the wild, as well as in her own backyard. This show is a combination of her garden flora and local birds as well as those of distant regions.
DuAnne Simon switched from a degree in graphic design at Auburn University when one of her design classes introduced her to commercial photography. Discovering her true passion, she gained experience in various assistant photographer roles, a photographer at Macy's photo studio in NYC, published a children's book, and was principal photographer on the best-selling style book "Nora Murphy's Connecticut Country Home". All the while, she continued to pursue her love of photographing people and nature. Combining her interest in gardening with photography, she experimented with using a macro lens to document the flora and fauna in her own garden. She presents a collection of black and white and color close-ups that were executed with attention to detail in form, texture, and color.
