Our membership spoke and we listened! The Boyne Chamber surveyed our members and found strong interest in having a business luncheon several times a year.
 The #1 topic suggestion from our members was workplace wellness, and that will be the topic of our first Grub Club lunch, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield on Thursday, March 26th. Workplace wellness is obviously a critical issue these days
with everyone taking precautions to avoid the Coronavirus. That issue will be discussed, and we expect to have informational handouts available.
The Grub Club will make its debut in the Vienna Room of Boyne Mountain's Mountain Grand Lodge. Enjoy lunch and hear Timothy Amborski from McLaren Northern Michigan Family Practice speak on the importance of keeping you and your employees healthy.
Grub Club runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and admission is $25 for members and $30 for not-yet members. If you'd like to promote your business, vendor display tables are available for $200. Table sponsors receive two admission tickets, are introduced from the podium and can make a one-minute pitch on the microphone.
 Timothy Amborski, family nurse practitioner, has over 14 years of medical experience and practices at McLaren Northern Michigan Family Medicine. Timothy started his nursing career at McLaren Northern Michigan in 2004 after attending North Central Michigan College.
After working for the hospital for 7 years, Timothy started his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Ferris State University. Just two months after receiving his BSN, Timothy started his Master of Science in Family Nurse Practitioner specialty from Chamberlain University.
Timothy has a special interest in men's health, family care, and elderly care. Preventative medicine, including screenings, healthy eating, and exercise are important tools in his method of care to patients.

St. Patrick's Pub Crawl set for this Boyne City Saturday
 Boyne City's Second Annual St. Patrick's Day Pub Crawl is a sell-out, just like last year. Organizers sold 115 tickets for the event on Saturday, March 14th. Primary election: Biden swamps Sanders in city, county, state
 Former Vice President Joe Biden defeated Senator Bernie Sanders by wider margins in the City of Boyne City and Charlevoix County than his statewide margin of 16 points in Tuesday's Democratic Primary Election.
Biden beat Sanders 316 to 200 in the City of Boyne City, a margin of 63.5% to 35.3%. County-wide, Biden defeated Sanders, 2,120 to 1,344 votes, a margin of 53.7% to 33.8%. Next in order after Biden and Sanders were Michael Bloomberg with 5.3%, Elizabeth Sanders and Pete Buttigieg with 1.7% each, and Amy Klobuchar with 1.5%.
Statewide, Biden defeated Sanders 52.9% to 36.4%.
On the Republican side, President Donald Trump swamped three opponents, tallying 94.9% of the vote.

Boyne City business owners and managers are invited to find employees and help prepare young people for the work world on Thursday, April 9th. The Boyne City High School annual Interview Fair will be held from 8:30-10 a.m. in the school gymnasium. This is a great opportunity for the business community to get involved with the school community and to seek out potential summer hires or even full-time hires as our seniors enter the workforce or head off to college in the fall. This event is well received by both the students and the community members that participate. Businesses looking to hire have been able to find summer interns and excited-to-work young adults. Those who are not looking to hire can participate as a "mock" interviewer to help our students get practice at such a necessary aspect of their adult life.

The Boyne Chamber's next Off The Clock will be hosted by Lynda's Real Estate Service at 27 S. Lake St., and will be cosponsored by Family Fare Supermarket. The event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19th and includes door prizes, food, drink, business networking and a 50/50 raffle with proceeds going to a nonprofit organization. Off The Clock is the new name for Business After Hours, the chamber's monthly business networking event held at member businesses. Main Street façade grant applications now available
$20,000 to be invested into rehabilitation and improvement of downtown

Applications for Boyne City Main Street's 2020 façade grant program are now available. The façade grant program provides matching funds for Main Street District property owners and tenants to improve the facades of their buildings, in order to maintain the architectural character and economic viability of downtown.
"Boyne City Main Street looks forward to working with property owners to bring out the best in their buildings," Kelsie King-Duff, Boyne City Main Street Executive Director, said.
To begin the process, interested property owners or tenants must review the Facade Grant Program Guidelines, and meet with representatives from Boyne City Main Street to discuss the scope of the project. An application must then be submitted by noon on April 30. After a competitive review process by the Design Committee and Boyne City Main Street Board, a decision will be made on which projects receive funding. For every dollar awarded, the applicant must spend an equal amount. Individual grant amounts will be up to 50 percent of a project's cost. A total of $20,000 is available for the 2020-21 cycle.
Funds are provided by Boyne City Main Street with dollars raised through Boyne Thunder. There is no set minimum or maximum number of projects per year. Eligible items under the façade program include, but may not be limited to: removal of siding that was used to cover original building materials, exterior brick or wall surface repair, pointing of brick/mortar joint repair, window and/or door replacement/repair, any architectural details in need of repair and/or replacement. Ineligible expenses include paint, signage, awnings and work that has already been completed.
The grant program seeks to encourage private investment through the rehabilitation and improvement of facades within the Boyne City Main Street District, to encourage good design that will serve as quality examples, and to preserve the architectural character that is distinctive to Boyne City. By improving the appearance of the building facades, the program aims to improve the economic viability of the downtown.

NLEA seeks college students for summer intern positions
The DTE Energy Foundation will again provide funding for the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance (NLEA) Summer Internship program. This will be the sixth year of the program, which enables the NLEA to provide a real world opportunity for area college students on a meaningful project. Past projects have included: developing featured sites marketing packages, entrepreneur toolkit, broadband fiber project, marketing videos highlighting hot jobs in the area, and marketing photos/materials for the up-north trails project.
NLEA typically hires two students from the area who have completed their junior year of college, however there have been interns who were freshman and sophomores as well. The students' skill set and course of study will be matched to the project to give them experience working in their field. Interns will learn to work as a team member of a professional staff and gain experience networking with communities, businesses and education leaders. This is a full-time position, paying $15/hour plus travel expenses at 40 hours/week roughly for the months of June, July, and August. Start and end dates will be adjusted to fit their college schedules.
This year's project will involve a thorough analysis of the components of our current communications program (website, newsletter, e-blasts, social media, etc.) and build out additional components (podcasts, video content, print media, email marketing) that will add to or replace our current program, to ensure we are maximizing our communications effort.

Taste of Boyne food vendor deadline extended to March 16
 For our valued restaurants and food merchants:
We are excited to invite you to be a part of Boyne Appétit! Restaurant Week. We know we have the very best food-based establishments and restaurants in Northern Michigan and we want EVERYONE else to know it, too. The simple truth: Small town. Epic Food.

Held at the Boyne Mountain Civic Center on Thursday, April 23, 2020, from 5:30 until 8:30, there will be no participation cost for your establishment and we ask that you provide "tastes" of your choice for 300 people, in addition to the appropriate staff to work the event. The Taste of Boyne registration deadline has been extended - return the form by Monday, March 16th. Only a few spaces remain. This form is separate from the Restaurant Week form.
But that's not all that is new! In an effort to promote your business year round, the folks that attend Taste of Boyne (there is an entrance fee for attending) will be receiving a punch card that is good for a year. This card will be taken to participating merchants and when ten $10 purchases are made, they will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift certificate. To do this well, we are asking you to provide us a $50 Gift Certificate prior to the Taste of Boyne evening. By doing so, your establishment will be listed on the punch card. Once a card holder has completed their card, they will be entered for our monthly drawing for one of the provided gift cards.

Census invitations will arrive by mail now through March 20
 Ninety-five percent or about 143 million households in the country will receive an initial invitation to respond to the 2020 Census in their mailboxes between March 12 and 20.
The card will have a unique code, called the census ID, that respondents will need to use to logon to the census website to complete the short, 9-question survey.
Households are encouraged to respond when they receive their invitation. Depending on how likely the area is to respond online, households will receive either an invitation encouraging them to respond online or by phone (about 112 million households), or an invitation along with a paper questionnaire (about 31 million households).
All households receiving an invitation in the mail will receive a second letter in the mail shortly after reminding them to respond. Then, households that still haven't responded will receive a series of additional reminders, including a paper questionnaire in mid-April. Census takers will follow up with households that don't respond to collect responses in person.

North Central offers free Google certification program
 North Central Michigan College is offering a self-paced online course leading to Google IT Support Professional certification, preparing students for entry-level IT support roles within a few months. North Central's partnership with Google and Jobs for the Future ensures that enrollees can complete the certification at no cost. The college is among only 100 community colleges included in the grant.
Google's IT Support Professional certification is regarded as a sought-after endorsement by employers both locally and nationwide.
Although Google estimates completion of the certification will take those with no IT experience under six months of working just five hours per week, those with even limited IT experience can complete the certification much faster, thanks to self-pacing, said Michael Malleis, professor of computer information systems at North Central.
The program is comprised of five courses covering key topics in IT support, including troubleshooting, customer service, networking, system administration, security and operating systems. Participants who complete the program through North Central will have the benefit of attending optional, weekly lab sessions with Malleis to learn additional material to make themselves even more marketable to employers.
North Central is offering two opportunities for participation: a spring cohort and a fall cohort, however space is limited and filling quickly. A kickoff and networking event for the Spring 2020 cohort is slated for late March. Those interested in enrolling may do so by signing up online. Bear River Health continues to grow and serve

You may not realize it, but tucked within our Boyne Area is Bear River Health (BRH), a Substance Use Disorder treatment and recovery program offering life skills development for those facing addiction. BRH provides a holistic, person-centered, evidence-based treatment model that uses trauma-informed care as a pathway to greater success in breaking destructive addiction patterns. "Saving Lives and Fostering Growth" is more than a tagline for the staff at BRH, it is a way of life that drives every decision and every interaction with clients.
Jeanne Marriott recently joined the expanding staff at BRH as the Regional Relationship Manager. Serving as a community liaison, Marriott will provide local BRH representation by attending and participating in advisory, civic and board meetings, as well as community events and activities where she will seek out partnership and collaboration opportunities. The goal is for her to generate goodwill through sponsorships and participation in events, and through these efforts, increase awareness of BRH facilities and programs. In addition, Jeanne will handle fundraising opportunities and events for the BRH non-profit arms, which further extend services in our communities.
"It's an amazing company with a vision to become the premiere treatment facility in the Midwest," said Marriott, "and the efforts that are being put forth are so important, especially in light of the current environment of increased abuse of addictive substances. Recovery is a journey, and BRH can be the guide to a better way of life."
BRH began expanding operations in 2014 and to date has made an investment in taxable real estate in Melrose Township in excess of $2-million. In addition, BRH has created more than 100 well paid jobs in the community. The company is very close to opening a Federal Rural Health Facility (clinic) that will operate out of the old Boyne Falls School. This will serve the community at large as a Medicare and Medicaid Primary Care operation.

Giving up something for Lent? How about giving to someone for Lent? Good Neighbors Food Pantry suggests giving to your neighbors in need. The pantry could use your help with the following: chicken noodle soup, cream of mushroom soup, tuna fish, and macaroni and cheese. Items can be dropped off at the pantry at 624 State St. on Mondays from 1-2:30 p.m., or Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m.-noon and 1:30-5:30 p.m.

Rotary plans monthly open meeting March 16 at Cafe Sante
The Boyne City Rotary Club will hold an "open meeting" at 6 p.m. Monday, March 16, at Cafe Sante.
The public is invited to attend and learn how Rotary contributes to the Boyne community and how their service projects benefit people around the world. This meeting will take the place of the usual weekly meeting held at 7 a.m. on the first, second and fourth Mondays of the month at the Boyne District Library Community Room. Cuddle Cot gives the gift of time at McLaren Northern Michigan
At McLaren Northern Michigan, we are now able to give the gift of time to those that experience infant loss with a device called a Cuddle Cot. Cuddle Cot is a temperature-controlled bassinet that allows a baby to spend more time by the parent's side as they grieve.
"As a medical professional, it is heartbreaking to see the loss of a baby," stated Ross Witherbee, MSN, RN, Clinical Nurse Manager at McLaren Northern Michigan. "With this bassinet, parents are able to spend more precious time to love, cherish, and say goodbye to their child."
The Cuddle Cot was donated to the Obstetrics Unit by a generous donor to the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation who has experienced a loss of a child.

Startup Fundamentals workshop offered in Charlevoix
The Small Business Development Center is sponsoring a free Startup Fundamentals workshop from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, in Charlevoix. The Startup Fundamentals workshop is intended for individuals in the beginning stages of starting a business, in need of accessing capital, or simply considering self-employment. This introductory session helps aspiring entrepreneurs assess their abilities to lead and manage a company, as well as evaluate market and sales potential for their products/services. This comprehensive 2.5-hour workshop also incorporates the SBDC's fundamental Writing a Business Plan workshop and fully covers topics such as determining concept feasibility, startup costs, financing options, the basics of business planning, along with other necessary resources to launch. The workshop features instruction by SBDC Small Business Consultant Samantha McDonald and is a prerequisite to meeting with a SBDC consultant one-on-one.

Performers announced for expanded Gazebo concert season
 The Boyne Area Chamber has announced its Evenings at the Gazebo schedule, and we are excited to offer an extended season with 10 concerts this summer. The 2020 series is presented by Black Diamond Broadcasting with concerts held in Old City Park on Wednesday evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Concerts are made possible by additional support from local businesses and individual sponsors. Seven of the 10 concert sponsorships are still available. Band sponsors are featured on a logo banner displayed at all concerts and they get to introduce the band on concert nights. Sponsors also have their name or logo included on all promotional materials, listed on our website, listed in our weekly newsletter, and on Facebook.

Library hosts highland dance lessons and census help

CENSUS STATIONS - The Census Bureau will be mailing postcards to every household beginning today, March 12. The card will have a unique code, called the census ID, that respondents will need to use to logon to the census website to complete the short, 9-question survey.  The Boyne Falls Public School Alumni Game will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 14th in the school gymnasium. You're invited to join in for a night of fun and enjoy some friendly competition featuring Boyne Falls Alumni (several past all-conference), staff team and surrounding school rivals. Enjoy our hearty concessions for dinner opening at 5 p.m., or relax at the intermissions with coffee and dessert. Conservation District plans paint parties, tree sale, plat book
The Charlevoix Conservation District is planning paint parties, a tree sale and a new county plat book. Here are the details:
PAINT PARTY - The district has partnered with Gaudy Giggles and will be hosting Paint Parties on the first Saturday of each month at 9:45 a.m. in their office Community Room, 303 North St, Boyne City. Vendor applications for the summer version of the Boyne City Farmers Market are now available here. The registration deadline is March 13th. The summer market is held in Veterans Park on Wednesdays and Saturdays from May 16 through October 17.

Wellness Workshop topics include colon health, tai chi
 "Talk with a Doc Lunch and Learn" will discuss colon health on Tuesday, March 17th from 12pm-1pm at the Munson Wellness Workshop in Charlevoix. March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and we are excited to have Dr. Barrett Kielhorn coming to the Wellness Workshop. Michigan State Extension will be teaching another cohort of their popular "Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention" class beginning on Wednesday, March 18th from 2-3pm. The Wellness Workshop will be hosting a Suicide Prevention Training on Tuesday, March 24th from 5:30-9pm. SafeTALK is a free program paid for by Kiersten's Ride that teaches participants to recognize and engage persons who might be having thoughts of suicide. The training teaches how to be the safe link in connecting them to suicide intervention resources. This training challenges the taboos that inhibit open-talk about suicide. Churches plan benefit dinner to build church in Nicaragua
 Boyne Valley Catholic Community (BVCC), comprised of St. Augustine (Boyne Falls), St. John Nepomucene (Praga), and St. Matthew (Boyne City) churches, is planning a benefit dinner to help build a new church in Nicaragua. Boyne Valley's sister parish, Our Lord of Veracruz, is building the church in El Cacao, Nicaragua. The condition and size of the old church necessitated a replacement, and with the depressed economic conditions in El Cacao, BVCC is stepping up to help.
The dinner is scheduled for 12 noon on Sunday, March, 22 at the St. Matthew Parish Hall at 1303 Boyne Ave. in Boyne City. A menu of authentic Nicaraguan food will be offered, along with a program of Nicaraguan entertainment. Cost of the benefit dinner is a free-will donation made at the door. College lectures look at 'Redistricting the New Way' and trash
North Central Michigan College's Luncheon Lecture series for the winter semester continues on a variety of topics on Fridays in the College Library Conference Center. MARCH 13 - REDISTRICTING THE NEW WAY. In November 2018, Michigan voters approved the "Voters Not Politicians" constitutional amendment that makes a commission of 13 randomly selected citizens responsible for drawing district lines for the Michigan Senate, Michigan House of Representatives and U.S. Congress. You can apply to be a member of the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission and help draw the new lines resulting from the 2020 census. Sally Marsh, director of special projects for Michigan's Secretary of State, explains it all.
MARCH 20 - TALKING TRASH. Do you ever wonder what happens to the stuff you put out to the curb every week? Chris Gee knows. He got his start in the trash business at age 9. Today, he runs the landfill in Onaway owned by GFL Environmental Inc. based in Toronto, Canada, that takes all of the trash collected in Emmet County. He can also tell you some surprising things about eagles and how he's looking at ways to turn some of your waste into electricity.

PNR: Tell me about your background in music.
TD: I've always loved singing since I was a little girl. Eventually, I knew that I'd love to do it for a living. I entered some talent shows as a young girl and I was in a few groups. When I was coming up we didn't make no good living at it, but we paid our dues.
I used to go to jam sessions and check out soul blues band called Lamont Zodiac and the Love Signs on the East Side of Detroit. They found out that I could sing, and they asked me to get up and sing with them and eventually I was asked to join the band. They changed their name to The Chisel Brothers featuring Thornetta Davis.
