WRRC 2020 Conference Postponed
Amid the growing concerns surrounding COVID-19, the disease caused by the  novel  coronavirus the WRRC has decided it would be best to postpone our March 27th annual conference, Water at the Crossroads: The Next 40 Years. We want to make sure that we do all we can to ensure the health and safety of our participants. Although we are still working through the details, we will likely move the conference to late August 2020. Additional information about registration and potential refunds for those who are unable to attend in August will be forthcoming next week. Thank you for your understanding.

WRRC NEWS
articleNew Article Examines Arizona's Water Credit Transactions

Doctoral student and WRRC alum, Rebecca Bernat, working with Director Sharon B. Megdal and Assistant Director Susanna Eden, has written a groundbreaking article on Arizona's Long-Term Storage Credit (LTSC) water transactions, published in the journal Water on February 19th. Working with 23 years of data from the Arizona Department of Water Resources, Bernat teased out who has been buying and who has been selling these water storage credits created under Arizona law through groundwater recharge. The authors used this analysis to reveal how the growing LTSC market benefits its participants and serves state water management goals. Within a comprehensive discussion, the roles of the Arizona Banking Authority, Central Arizona Groundwater Replenishment District, and investment firms receive focused attention. The article, "Long-Term Storage Credits: Analyzing Market-Based Transactions to Achieve Arizona Water Policy Objectives," is freely available online from Water or the WRRC website.

apw1Water Stewardship and Virus Prevention Go Hand in Hand

What better focus for the week than hand washing? Last Friday, APW students wandered around the WRRC offering our colleagues iced tea. Why you ask? They wanted the perfect tippy tap jug of course! In preparing for the (now canceled) Tucson Festival of Books, we'd decided to have a handy hand-washing station for our visitors. Enter the tippy tap , a simple technology using a jug suspended by a rope and a foot-operated lever to pour a small amount of water over one's hands.  We learned about tippy taps from our colleagues at the Project WET Foundation and their global Water, Sanitation, and Handwashing (WASH) Program. Tippy Taps are effective in reducing the spread of disease anywhere in the world, including right here in Arizona! So, as we collectively aim to improve our sanitation practices by increasing the frequency of our handwashing, consider setting up a tippy tap when plumbing is not available. At 25 hand-washings per gallon, you'll be saving water, too!

earth-weekEarth Week at UArizona Features Student Research

Two upcoming Earth Week events at UArizona will showcase student work on water-related topics. The first, on Monday, April 6th, is the annual "El Día del Agua y la Atmósfera", hosted by the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences. Held in the UA Student Union Grand Ballroom, the day will feature cutting edge research by students from all areas of water and atmospheric sciences. A keynote presented by Everette Joseph, Director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, will set off the oral presentations and poster sessions presented by students. The second event, on Wednesday and Thursday, April 8th and 9th, is the annual ENViSion (formerly SWESx) symposium, hosted by the Department of Environmental Science in the Environment and Natural Resources 2 Building (ENR2). Beginning after lunch on the 8th, the program consists of oral presentations, lightning talks, and a poster session, all by students. If you attend, expect to find more than 200 oral and poster research presentations by graduate and undergraduate students. The WRRC is helping to support both events.

plantingPlanting for Water Conservation - A New Resource

Spring is upon us! As many in Arizona are starting to wake up their gardens and get into spring landscaping projects, a new resource is available to help. Water - Plant It Wisely is an online guide to water conservation in our gardens. Here in Arizona, as much as 70% of residential water is used outdoors. This reality brings into focus the value of water conservation in our landscape design. Among the resources available on the site are a plant selection guide, information on desert-plant care, landscape design tips, and a ten-part video guide to rehabilitating your backyard. Whether you are a seasoned desert gardener or you are new to our climate, the site has useful information to guide your projects.
