Fine Motor Practice
  • Tracing Lines: For this activity, you will need construction paper and gems/buttons/beads/any small items from around your home. You or have your child draw lines on the paper and have your child trace along the lines with the small item that you chose. This activity will allow your child to practice their hand control by using just one or two fingers at once to pick up the material and place it onto the line.
Art / Center Time
  • Spring Sky Painting: For this activity, you will need white paper, blue paint, and white paint. Invite your child to mix the blue and white paint to create the shades of blue in the sky and the clouds.
  • Pattern Blocks and Tangrams: This activity is best suited for 3-5 year olds. Click here to download printable pattern blocks and tangram pattern sheets. Cut out the pattern blocks from the sheets of paper. Once printed, invite your child to try to fill in the pictures using the pattern blocks. Which pattern blocks fit inside the pictures?
Science / Cooking
  • Shiny Penny Experiment: For this experiment, you will be seeing if soap or vinegar cleans old pennies better to make them shine! You will need 3 dull pennies, 2 paper cups, vinegar, liquid soap, and a paper towel. Take a guess of which liquid will make a penny shine. Set one penny aside. Put a penny in each of the paper cups. In one cup, pour enough vinegar to cover the penny. In the other cup, pour enough liquid soap to cover the penny. Wait about 10-15 minutes. Remove the pennies, rinse them with water, and dry them with a paper towel. Look at all three pennies. Which one is the shiniest? Did the vinegar or the soap work better?
Gross Motor Play
  • Metal Object Scavenger Hunt: This activity is a continuation from the cloth textures scavenger hunt we sent out on Friday, April 17. As with the cloth textures, go on a scavenger hunt around your house to find a collection of safe metal objects: unused keys, spoons and utensils of all sizes, etc. Have your child practice skipping, jumping, galloping, or walking backward while walking around to work on their motor skills. Explore these objects together with your child. Feel free to bang and tap and listen to the sounds. Metal is loud and cool to the touch!
  • To expand on this activity, what can you create with all of these metal objects? Can you make a band? Can you build a tower? Let your child's imagination run free to create something new! Let your child name their new creation once it's complete.
Outdoor Time
  • Jackson Pollock Art: Warning: This activity is a lot of fun, but very messy! For this activity, you will need an old sheet/large sheets of paper/piece of cardboard depending on the size of the work you would like to create, paint, and paintbrushes/sticks. Jackson Pollack was a famous artist who was known for his drip style painting where he would move around his canvas and actually "get into" his paintings. He sometimes used paintbrushes, but preferred using sticks. Lay your canvas down on the ground outside and invite your child to drip different colors of paint onto the canvas.
