Dear Members,
The Economic Uncertainty for Artists During Covid-19
Many of our WCA/NH artist members and friends rely on their artistic practice to make money. During these unpredictable times it's hard to fathom what the future will hold. When will galleries reopen? Will craft fairs be held this summer? How about the Fall and Christmas art and craft fairs? And if these businesses and events reopen, will consumers feel confident enough in their safety to attend? All of this is an unknown.
If you haven't yet tried marketing your artwork online, now is an excellent time. Potential shoppers are at home glued to the internet. Online sales are the new normal for most if not all of commerce.
I would suggest starting with social media: Instagram and Facebook. If you don't already have a website, create a free website yourself using wix.com, weebly.com or others. If you are a teacher, create YouTube demonstrations and continue teaching your students with Zoom.
This article has great advice: "
How Artists are Dealing with the Coronavirus Cancellations."
Here are some local financial resources for artists:
The NH State Council on the Arts emergency fund deadline just ended, but more money may become available. They have other grants for artists, and a
page listing Covid-19 resources. Be sure to get on their mailing lists.
Subscribe to the
NHSCA E-Opps News & Calendar. This month's edition lists a plethora of grants and funding available because of the Covid-19 crisis.
The NH Small Business Development Center offers free Covid-19 assistance to small businesses.
Stay safe and healthy,

Poets on Couches: Maya C. Popa
In our new series of videograms, poets read and discuss the poems getting them through these strange times-broadcasting straight from their couches to yours. These readings bring intimacy into our spaces of isolation, both through the affinity of poetry and through the warmth of being able to speak to each other across the distances. "Monet Refuses the Operation" by Lisel Mueller Issue no. 84 (Summer 1982) Doctor, you say there are no haloes around the streetlights in Paris...

Making Matters NH Artist-in-Residence Application
Making Matters NH is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that operates an 8,500 sf makerspace and workspace targeted at artists, entrepreneurs, and innovators in Penacook. The makerspace currently includes a wood shop, metal shop, prototyping lab, fiber arts studio, and photography studio, with plans to add additional equipment in the coming year. Making Matters NH's shared workspace includes six 8x8 cubicle workspaces and five private studios.
Making Matters NH is launching a 6-month artist-in-residence program that will provide recipient a Making Matters NH membership and an 8x8 cubicle workspace free of charge. In exchange, the artist is asked to commit to working out of the makerspace, teach 8 classes over a 6 month period, and take on a project that benefits the community space in some way.
The artist-in-residence program is an opportunity for a local artist to gain access to new equipment and tools as well as collaborative workspace that allows them to continue to hone their skill and grow. Additionally, the program is an opportunity to teach others, mentor emerging artists, and have a positive impact on a new community space that's positively impacting the Concord region.
Below is a brief application to get a sense of your interests, why you'd be a good fit for Making Matters NH's artist-in-residence program, and what you would bring to the space.
If you have any questions about this program please reach out to Making Matters NH at
info@makingmattersnh.org.
We are asking that applications be completed by Friday May 15th. Our goal is for the Artist-in-Residence to begin by July 1st, with some flexibility and an understanding that current challenges with COVID-19 create uncertainty.

Museum of the White Mountains
From Cynthia Cutting, Director
While the museum is temporarily closed, there are
lots of great ideas from Virtual Museum
tours to online exhibits on the website and on
their FB and Instagram.
One of the ideas:
Getty has issued a playful social media challenge to re-create your favorite art using just the objects lying around home. The challenge was inspired by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and a brilliant Instagram account called Between Art and Quarantine, but adapted with the invitation to use digitized and downloadable artworks from Getty's online collection. There have already been thousands of wonderful and creative responses!
We invite you to use MWM collections to inspire your own creativity! Share your creations with us on social media using the #MWM@Home hashtag!

Mother's Day Cards
Get creative or just thoughtful and make your mother a mother's day card. Nothing says love like home-made! (Remember your grandmothers, too!) Mother's Day is Sunday, May 10.
Nursing Home Cards
Here is a specific home asking for help:
We work so hard to keep our residents safe and happy but they are quarantined to their apartments and they are sad and lonely. They are missing their families and friends. A way you can all help is by sending "Happy Cards". A simple card or letter in the mail brightens their day. They put it on their table and it's a gift that keeps on giving. Feel free to add a happy photo of any kind especially of children and animals.
Please share this and send the word.

Exhibitions
Call for Art
Narratives: A Woman's Point of View,
Every picture tells a story and every point of view has a particular attitude or way of considering a matter. "Narratives: A Woman's Point of View" is a juried exhibition to be held August 1 through August 29 at VynnArt Gallery in Meredith, NH. It will be open to all works of 2D and 3D art in all mediums. A
narrative
is the choice of how to tell a story, what details to share and in what order to relate them. It is a representation or specific manifestation of the
story
, rather than the
story
itself. A
narrative
turns
stories
into information and knowledge for the recipient. In this show, we will highlight "Narratives" from a women's point of view through art.

The Last Painting of Sarah de Vos
by Dominic Smith
A riveting tale according to reviews in The New York Times and the Washington Post.
Utopia Parkway The Life and
Work of Joseph Cornell by Deborah Solomon 1997
Certainly legends abound about Cornell, but Solomon presents what he was: a brilliant, relentlessly serious artist, one
whose stature has now reached monumental proportions.
Werner's Nomenclature of Colours Adapted to Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Mineralogy, Anatomy, and the Arts by Patrick Syme 1821 This is the book Charles Darwin used to describe colors in nature on his voyage of the HMS Beagle. Pick a color, any color, and then discover what it is in the Animal, Vegetable, or Mineral kingdom. Buff Orange in the Animal kingdom is
Streak from the Eye of the King Fisher. In the Vegetable kingdom it is Stamina of the large White Cistus, and in the Mineral kingdom it is Natrolite. If you would like to create this color, it is sienna yellow with a little Dutch Orange.

Paulette's additions
Vincent and Theo: The Van Gogh Brothers by Deborah Heiligman.A remarkably insight, profoundly moving story of fraternal interdependence and unconditional love" -Kirkus Reviews.
I might add, the design and presentation of this book is itself interesting and worth a look.
The Swan Thieves: A Novel by Elizabeth Kostova Art, love and crime! What could make a better story? Based loosely on real characters, and set in the nineteenth century, it is an obsessive read!
Carole Groenke's additions
The Overstory by Richard Powers- Precient, well written. You must follow this one to the end!
The Point of Vanishing by Howard Axelrod- Account of 2 years spent alone in Vt.
The Stars in Our Pockets by Howard Axelrod- Should be required reading in schools!
Bleaker House by Nell Stevens- Talk about solitude!
Full Tilt by Dervla Murphy- Cilla Sheehan gave me this book as a B'day gift last year.
Hope Against Hope by Nadezhda Mandelstam- Read this in Nov. 2016, re-reading now.
The Vagabond or anything else by Colette- Because, why not?
*if you have favorites, or have just read something you think others would love, send me a note and I can include it another time.
