Virtual "Stuff the Bus" event kicked off by Dawson County Family Connection

Throughout the month of July, Dawson County Family Connection will host a "Virtual Stuff the Bus" drive to raise school supplies for local children in need.

According to Family Connection Coordinator Nancy Stites, under normal circumstances, the school supply drive is held in person, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that was not possible this year.

"We usually do one collection day; we've done it at Walmart or Kroger in the past," Stites said, "We've had a school bus there with a big sign and set up a tent outside. So people would shop at the store, buy school supplies and drop it in our bin on the way out."
But because holding an in-person drive is off the table this year, Family Connection has taken the school supply drive online.

The main way the organization will be collecting school supply donations this year, is through an Amazon wishlist. The link to the wishlist is on the Family Connection Facebook page, and any supplies purchased through the wishlist will be mailed directly to Family Connection.
"It's convenient, and it gives some flexibility in your spending because you can buy in bulk or you can buy just a single notebook," Stites said. "So if you don't have a lot to spend and just want to buy one item, that's awesome and thank you very much!"

Any and all donations, no matter how big or small, can make a huge difference for local children who can't afford to purchase their own school supplies, according to Stites.
"We're a little afraid they're not going to have as many supplies donated as they did last year, so we just really appreciate any donations," Stites said.

The Protecting Children During a Crisis online training is designed to help you navigate through the unusual circumstances you might face during times of crisis. This change is any situation where you need to modify the steps you take to protect your children because of a situation that is out of your control. This training will help you consider your current strategies, help you identify the new situation, and help you change your strategy.

Georgia Ranks 38th in the Nation for Child and Family Well-Being

Georgia again ranks 38th in the nation for overall child and family well-being in the latest KIDS COUNT
® Data Book, released today by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

This annually published resource tracks child well-being nationally and state by state and ranks the states by how well they are doing by their children. The Data Book looks at Georgia across four domains-education, economic well-being, health, and family and community-to measure progress and identify areas where this state struggles. For the 2020 report, the newest data are from 2018 and 2019-so they don't reflect current conditions amidst the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, but disaggregating the data by race and ethnicity do reflect the tragic effects of systemic racism.

"These data allow us to look at the ways children, families, and communities already had vulnerabilities that affected not only the path of the coronavirus in Georgia, but also how societal inequities and institutionalized racism shape the data we share," said Georgia Family Connection Partnership (GaFCP) Executive Director Gaye Smith. "So many of the systems represented in these data have been deemed essential amid the coronavirus pandemic-and indeed have always been essential. GaFCP remains committed to working with our statewide network and partners to achieve better outcomes for our most vulnerable children and families, which ultimately will lead to vibrant, healthy communities for the benefit of every Georgian."

Do your part and respond to the 2020 Census today!
Online (
my2020census.gov), by phone (1-800-923-8282), or by mail (return the questionnaire you received in the mail) - it takes less than 10 minutes but makes a BIG difference.
Census data benefits communities in various ways. According to a study published by GW Institute of Public Policy, one person in Georgia is estimated to be worth $2300 in federal funding per year. Over 55 federal programs use census data to fund services that can directly impact your community such as school lunches, Medicaid, rural assistance, food banks, SNAP, WIC, and housing assistance. It can also be used for local planning purposes such as determining the number of schools, recreation facilities, or senior housing needed.
