Master Gardener Volunteers
Just a handful of the amazing group of 19 people that attended the 2019 Clay County Master Gardener program this year. With the recent plant sale and Intern projects under way they've been working diligently over the past few weeks to beautify the area at the Brasstown Community Civic Center and create raised beds at their Clay County Downtown Discovery Garden. Our Master Gardeners donate fresh grown vegetables ,that are grown in several of the raised beds to the community, as well as maintain several other gardens each year. For more info on getting involved in the Master Gardener program call us at 828-389-6305 or stop by the Clay County Extension Office for more info.

Pesticide Recertification Trainings
These trainings are for those that already have current private and/or commercial pesticide licenses. Every three years Private Applicators will need 2 hrs of "V" training and 2 hrs of X training. If you do not have hours in either X or V and your license is going to expire in 2019, you will need to attend one or more of these trainings. Commercial licenses need only recertification hours for the category listed for the type license you have. The number of credit hours also depends on the type license you have. If you want to check the credit hours you need for private licenses, go to  https://apps.ncagr.gov/licensesearch .
Following are the dates and locations of trainings. Most of the demonstration X trainings will include categories B G H I K L N O T D and X. Call before coming to make sure your category is approved. All training categories are 2 credit hours:
July 29th , V & X, 1:00-5:00, Clay Co. Extension Office

Watermelon
Watermelons are mostly water-about 92 percent - but this refreshing fruit is soaked with nutrients. Each juicy bite has significant levels of vitamins A, B6, and C, lots of lycopene, antioxidants and amino acids. Lycopene has been linked with heart health, bone health and prostate cancer prevention.

3 cups fresh watermelon, chopped
1/2 red onion, finely chopped
1 jalapeno, finely chopped (seeded if you prefer less heat)
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
juice of 2 limes
Zest of 1 lime
pinch of salt
Tortilla Chips, for serving

In large bowl, stir together watermelons, onion, jalapeno, cilantro, lime juice and zest. Season with salt. Let sit 10 - 20 minutes to let the flavors meld. Serve with chips.
