Winter Break Information
WINTER BREAK
Please visit our website for additional information about break including what to do before you leave and if you are not returning for spring.

Winter Break Safety
The Housing and Residence Life office will be closed December 23 through January 3. The Community Center will be closed December 18 through January 10. It is recommended that residents not leave valuables in their apartments or residence halls during winter break. With the USI campus closed, there will be limited staff available.

Before You Leave
When leaving for 24 hours or more during winter or cold weather, make sure that the heat is ON and that the thermostat is set to LOW or 65 degrees.

Room Inspections
USI staff will be conducting room inspections during winter break which include checking thermostats, weather radios, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Room inspections will take place December 21-January 7.

Apartment Residents
During room inspections maintenance staff will also be checking under bathroom and kitchen sinks to make sure plumbing is in good working order.

Bed Bug Inspections
Also, during winter break the biannual bed bug inspections will take place in campus housing. A specially trained dog along with its handler will go through rooms to detect the presence of bed bugs. The process usually takes 10 to 14 days to check all resident spaces. For those residents staying on campus during this time, the handler will have a list of occupied rooms in order to knock and identify themselves prior to inspection. Inspections should be completed by January 7.
Mail and Package Delivery
Don't forget to pick up your mail and packages! All mail and packages will be returned to sender if not picked up by Monday, December 21.

For the spring 2021 semester, we will be accepting packages starting January 8. We will not accept packages before this date.

If you need packages or mail before January 8, please have them sent to a non-USI address. This includes textbooks. When planning for spring classes, if you aren't sure when you will return to housing, then we advise you to have textbooks shipped to a non-USI address.

Locked Out
With the USI campus closed during winter break (December 23-January 3) and limited HRL staff available, Public Safety will assist residents with lock outs. If you find yourself locked out of your apartment or residence hall suite, please call 812-464-1845.

NOTE: The HRL office is open December 14-18 and December 21-22, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. If you need assistance during that time, please call 812-468-2000 or stop by the front desk.

Scheduled Power Outage
Maintenance will perform necessary electrical work and outages will be as follows:

December 21
O'Bannon Hall 7-9 a.m.
Ruston Hall 9-11 a.m.
Newman Hall 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Governors Hall 1-3 p.m.

Room Temperature in Residence Halls
The halls use a chill water system to supply cooling to the entire building and it is turned off during the winter months. Air handlers supply a limited amount of 55°F air to rooms but may not fully cool them. Please open a window if it gets too warm. If the suite is too cold, residents should submit a work order to have it checked.
