Spring 2021 - Issue 3
Housing and Residence Life
On-Campus Housing Information
Living on-campus allows you to feel connected to USI and prepares them for life beyond the University. You will gain independence, meet new people and be able to sleep in longer! Studies show that students who live on campus get better grades and are more likely to graduate in four years.

The Housing and Residence Life Office oversees all the residence halls, apartment communities and the living learning communities on campus. The office provides both student staff and full-time staff living on campus to assist students.

Resident Assistants (RAs) are student staff members selected for leadership skills, their ability to reach out to peers and their capacity to connect students to the resources they need to be successful. RAs are trained to help students manage any issue that may arise while living on-campus. RAs are in all of the various housing areas and are there to help.

Area Coordinators (ACs) are professional staff members that live in a specific area of Housing and Residence Life facilities. ACs supervise the RAs, plan and implement programs, manage the area facilities, conduct meetings with students regarding policy violations and are great resources if students have questions or issues.

Living on Campus Frequently Asked Questions
Spring 2021 Guest and Overnight Guests Policy
To maintain the health and safety of the USI campus, only students assigned to an apartment or residence hall room are permitted in their assigned living space. No guests are permitted in residence hall rooms or apartments. Overnight guests are not permitted. Staff may still need to enter these living spaces to perform their job duties. The guest policy will be reviewed throughout the semester and updates made as needed.

Housing and Residence Life Updates
Please visit the Housing and Residence Life website regarding housing updates for the Fall 2020 Semester. You will find information about guests, room change process, prevention measures and much more. If you have questions, please email living@usi.edu.

Something Broke or Not Working Right?
If you need any work done that you cannot do yourself by using the self help maintenance, an online work order should be submitted. The Fix My Home work order form can be found in the housing icon in your myUSI.
Living Off-Campus
Commuting to USI
Living in off-campus housing or at home gives students the opportunity to be both independent and at USI. Consider broadening your network by meeting new people, and maybe even living with them! The quickest way to meet new people at USI is to get involved and participate.

Parking
Commuter students may park in any University lot that does not require a parking permit or that is marked restricted. Most lots on the main campus are available for commuter students. Commuter students do not need a parking permit to park on campus.

Time Between Classes
When you have time before, after or between classes, you should make sure to connect with campus by doing some of the following:
  • Go to Rice Library and study or grab a coffee
  • Relax down by Reflection Lake in the gazebo
  • Run over to the Recreation Fitness and Wellness Center for a quick workout
  • Take a stroll down the USI-Burdette Trail
  • Use your meal plan or Munch Money to eat on campus at one of the restaurants

Student Services
Being well can help you do well inside and outside of the classroom. Self-care, including quality sleep, good nutrition and knowing how to cope with stress, all contribute to your ability to thrive as a USI student. Wellness is an active, continuous process of self-enhancement. Every day students make choices that influence their well-being. From locating resources on campus to needing someone to talk to about challenges in life, the following offices will help you be successful during your time at USI.
Career Services and Internship Resources
Career Launch
As a USI student, you have access to the online job bank, Career Launch, to pursue part- and full-time jobs, internships and co-ops. Employers can post jobs that are suitable for students while they are in school. Questions: Please call 812-464-1865 or email career@usi.edu
Internships
Internships translate classroom theory into application and provide a practical framework for academic coursework. A wide variety of paid, unpaid and for-credit internships are available both on and off campus.
Job Searching
Make an appointment to meet with a USI Career Services professional to:
  • Identify your skill sets
  • Review your resume
  • Discuss your search strategy
  • Practice your interviewing skills
If you are interested in an internship or starting a job search, register with Career Services and Internships and schedule an appointment with a career coordinator to learn more.
Working in College
Having a job in college is a great way to build up a resume, gain transferable skills, and earn a paycheck.
Working On-Campus
Working on campus can help you feel connected to USI, meet new people, and feel a part of something. Most on-campus jobs come with an understanding that you are a student first and offer flexibility. The location is also a perk. Instead of commuting to a job, you can reduce travel time and costs by working on campus. There are two types of on-campus positions: Student Worker and Federal Work Study.
Working Off-Campus
Working off campus is another option that you have. Working off campus offers more job options and often higher wages. However, you will spend more time off campus and the employer may not be so understanding that you are a student first. Make sure you factor in travel time when looking at off-campus jobs.
