BHS Students Attend CyberSecurity Summit
Representatives of the Baraboo High School CyberPatriot team attended the Governor's CyberSecurity Summit in Madison Monday. The team was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation and recognized by Governor Tony Evers, Wisconsin CIO David Cagigal, and Wisconsin's Homeland Security Advisor Adjutant General Donald P. Dunbar.

The team attended keynote and panel discussions on CyberSecurity topics and enjoyed a private lunch for students with Mr. Cagigal and General Dunbar.

Phase III Update
If you have ever been inside Jack Young Middle School, you've probably been struck a notable feature: the large, steep ramp system students use to move from one level to another.

The successful April 2019 referendum has allowed the District to expand and revitalize Jack Young Middle School. These renovations include a redesign of  Jack Young's ramp system. Architects and district leaders have worked together to replace Jack Young's ramps with a staircase that will improve student circulation. It will also include an area for student learning and collaboration known as a "social stair." The new stair will be an exciting, functional focal point within JYMS.

In the weeks and months to come, we look forward to sharing additional features of the revitalized Jack Young Middle School. Please stay tuned for more!

ABE Goes Pink Against Bullying
In honor of Anti-Bullying Day, the staff at Al Behrman Elementary donned PINK yesterday! Teachers used the color-coordinated Pink Shirt Day as a way to talk about bullying with their students.

EAST Receives Student Visitor from Japan
Mrs. Pavlue's Fifth Graders at East Elementary had the INCREDIBLE opportunity to make a new friend and spend the day sharing experiences with a special visitor from Japan! Students and staff were thrilled to invite Natsuki, a family friend of another student in our class, to become an East School Panther for the day.

Natsuki, or NaNa as she prefers to be called, seamlessly participated in Music and PE, as well as practiced breaking apart words in English, worked on Vocabular y in small groups, and was a fabulous group member creating rectangular prisms for a math project on volume.

Although English is not her first language, the class was so impressed to watch a special presentation she prepared and found that they have many things in common! They learned that her name means "Summer Hope" and she enjoys Art, Science and learning English. Students couldn't believe that NaNa also loves pizza, like so many of us!

When it was time to leave, the fifth graders all seemed to wish they had more time getting to know their special new friend. Some students told Mrs. Pavlue that they wished she could stay with us for the rest of the year; Mrs. Pavlue agreed!

We are proud to be in a district that works to foster an attitude of acceptance, appreciation and kindness towards people and cultures that are different from ours. We have so much to learn from each other!

GLW Students Investigate "Crime Scene"
Mrs. Harbort's 2nd grade students at Gordon L. Willson Elementary are learning about their schema and how it helps them infer things about their characters without the author telling them. A "crime scene" was set up to help them infer what might have happened in their room! (Seems like a small kindergartener might have wanted to do some art!)
BMSG Seeks Volunteers
The Baraboo Music Support Group is looking to create an email listing of willing parent/guardian volunteers for various JYMS and BHS band and choir events and needs.

Please consider taking a moment to complete this form to indicate your ability/interest in helping out if it is needed. The BMSG appreciates all gifts, talents and time!
NF's Got the Beat
For Hispanic Heritage Month, second grade students at North Freedom Elementary are learning about important Hispanic/Latinx musicians.

This week they learned about Millo Castro Zaldarriaga, a Young Cuban girl who believed in her dream of playing the drums at a time when it was taboo for girls to play the drums on the island. She followed her dreams and not only had the courage to learn how to play the drums, but also formed Cuba's first all female dance band with her sisters. She also played for the President of the United States when she was only fifteen!

After reading the book Drum Dream Girl, students had a chance to explore using chrome music lab on the iPads to create and share their own special beats!

Lamers Bus Lines is Seeking Additional School Bus Drivers!
Lamers Bus Lines is seeking additional school bus drivers!

This is a great opportunity for individuals looking for work before or after school. It's also a great job for parents of students in the District because:
  1. There are no nights or weekends for route drivers
  2. Drivers get summer vacation and snow days, just like the students
  3. If your child is in any sports or activities, you can get paid to cheer them on and support the team by driving the team bus
Lamers Bus Lines will provide complete paid training, and teach you everything you need to know about driving a school bus.  Please spread the word to anyone who may be interested to help us ensure that our students get to school, sports, and activities on time each day.

Questions may be directed the Lamers School Bus Office in Baraboo at 608-448-4851 extension 2.  Apply online at GoLamers.com/careers
ABE Gets Hands-On with Science
Al Behrman Elementary's fifth graders completed a science lesson about organisms interacting with their environments on Wednesday. ABE invited special guest Dr. Karen Mesmer, a retired Baraboo teacher who played an instrumental role in the District's current science curriculum, to assist.

The curriculum is based on the Next Generation Science Standards, which focuses on hands-on activities that allow children to explore and engage, rather than being taught from worksheets. Elementary schools in the District cover three science topics during the course of the year: biology, earth and space science, and physical science.

NOW HIRING: Substitute Custodial Positions
Looking for part-time work? Need flexible hours? Look no further!!

The district is seeking candidates for substitute custodial positions.  The starting rate is $12.50/hr!  Applications can be found online at  www.baraboo.k12.wi.us/district/jobs.cfm . Applications can also be picked up and submitted to the District Maintenance Shop; 1210 Berkley Blvd; Baraboo, WI  53913

Kiwanis Welcomes New Teachers
The Baraboo School District would like to thank the  Baraboo Kiwanis  for hosting Baraboo School District teachers during the annual Teacher Picnic on Tuesday. The Kiwanis took the opportunity to meet our new teachers and thank our current teachers for their tireless work within the District. We are so grateful for the support our students and teachers receive from this great community!

Looking for a Good Book? Check out the 7th Grade Hallway for Recommendations!
As a beginning of the year activity, all 7th graders at Jack Young Middle School had the opportunity to make the spine of their favorite book. The English Language Arts department built a "bookshelf" to showcase their favorite books!

JYMS is building a community of readers across the school. This was a great way for them to begin talking about books and to recommend books to their peers. It brightens the ELA hallway!
School Attendance Matters
We at the Baraboo School District enjoy our students. In fact, we enjoy them so much that we want them to attend class every day! We also care about our students, and we know that regular attendance can help our students succeed. For  more information on why regular attendance matters, click here to read our English and Spanish infographic!
